Memorial Weekend

This weekend, we pause to count our blessings and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom. To help you celebrate, here are a few of my posts with patriotic theme projects, food and tablescapes.

Patriotic Tablescape 6

I made this Patriotic Table Runner some time ago, and it is the foundation of most of my patriotic tablescapes.  The complete tutorial on how to make the tri-rec star blocks and put it together including putting borders on points, and binding non-90-degree angles HERE.  It is easy and fast, you could have one made in time for the July 4th weekend.

This simple patriotic table was one of the first ones I did with the runner, for a Patriotic Cookout on a rainy day. Red chargers and white plates with red salad plates, and red napkins with strawberry napkin rings. A simple centerpiece has red candles in clear holders with three star sprays.

This Patriotic Tablescape features the runner, plus white placemats, my white china and red salad plates. The centerpiece is a big red basket with silk flowers and flags.

Cooking out is a Memorial Day tradition, and I like to do some appetizers for guests to nibble on while the bratwurst cooks. My Ham Roll Ups and Deviled Eggs (The Last Deviled Egg Recipe You’ll Ever Need) fit the bill. I serve them on star shaped melamine plates.

Setting an al fresco table for the cookout is fun too. It is easy to make it into red, white and blue using paper napkins on top of white placemats and red plastic cups. A couple of star sprays from the dollar store and you have a festive table for very little money. The melamine star plates came from the dollar store as well. All perfect for an outdoor meal, or next to a pool, as nothing is breakable.

An easy but impressive dessert can be made with fresh strawberries, frozen whipped topping and purchased pound cake. Add some blueberries for a red, white and blue treat.

Put some flags in your hanging baskets and flower pots to add patriotic cheer. The pinwheels are from the dollar store.

This post, Reflections On an Early Morning, is a quiet time to consider how lucky we are and appreciate our world as we honor those who have lost their lives fighting for our nation.

And while we are outside, Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer for most of us in the USA. Recently, Wesley Masters at Rent.blog asked me to participate in a roundup of ideas on bringing the summer inside by giving some of my tips, along with a number of other bloggers. See the post at Summer Interior Design: Expert Tips to Brighten Your Living Space. Here’s a sneak peek at one of my ideas.

Inside, this Patriotic Mini Quilt was triple quilted in three motifs and three colors.  It was a fun and easy project.  Click on Patriotic Mini Quilt to see the steps and get the free pattern.

This is my red, white and blue version of Scrap Dance Tango.  The pattern is available on My Patterns page.  In fact, any of the Scrap Dance patterns would work well in a patriotic theme.

I made a Patriotic Nine Patch Star quilt for a Quilt of Valor with the help of friends.  It is shown in Christmas colors on this post.  This free pattern pdf download has both colorways – Nine Patch Star.  I set my quilt with sashing in the background ivory, and cornerstones of a star print.  See the construction and luncheon HERE.  This would make a great table runner too, with just enough blocks for your table.

This Red White and Blue tablescape featured fresh flowers from my garden.

Shop your house for red and blue things to create a patriotic display for a dinner table, a coffee table or a kitchen counter. Here, I pulled my flag platter for use as a base one year when I didn’t need it to serve the burgers. I found a red pot to hold some silk flowers, and added those same star sprays. Red votive candle holders complete the centerpiece.

Whatever this weekend holds for you, I wish you a wonderful Memorial Day, and I hope you are able to spend it with family and friends.  What are your plans?

  1. Happy Memorial Weekend, Carole. I really do love that table runner and your tablescapes are super pretty and festive. I hope the Dollar Store still has those star plates/dishes. Those would be fun for the cottage and the fourth, too. I always buy the start bursts — they’re just fun! Have a wonderful holiday — your traditional brats and apps look tasty!

It’s so fun to see all your patriotic quilts and table settings! I especially like the star runner that has that pretty lighter blue in it. We went bird-watching and had a picnic yesterday at one favorite spot nearby and one new (to us) where we added a new bird to our list that we hadn’t seen before. That was enjoyable! Hope you’re having a relaxing weekend!

Your tablescapes never disappoint and the patriotic settings are no exception. Lovely. I like the idea of using the paper napkins with placemats to perk up the table. Great idea for any occasion. Stars are one of my favorite quilt blocks, any and all of them. I think the 9-patch star QOV is striking. Putting it on my bucket list. Great way to use up red and blue scraps too.

love my patriotic mini quilt. I have it on my dining room table . I have used that pattern for numerous contributions to group patriotic quilts. Thanks for a great blog.

  4. Beautiful red, white, and blue tables and wonderful patriotic decor. I love the Patriotic Nine Patch Star quilt! Wishing you a lovely Memorial Day Weekend, Carole!

Thanks for the pattern – I must have missed this before, I love anything with stars!!! and I’m thinking this rainy day is perfect. I already pulled out all the blues and will check the red drawer – it’s pretty sparse.

Official wreath laying is tomorrow at the Veterans Cemetary where my husband is buried (and me eventually). It’s an awesome sight to see https://www.wjol.com/abraham-lincoln-national-cemetery-to-host-memorial-day-ceremony/ .

Hope you have a wonderful holiday! (I’m making your egg recipe as we speak!) Thanks.

  6. I always enjoy your wonderful tablescapes.

Our street is having a pot luck lunch at my house on Memorial Day. The weather doesn’t look too good, so I’m glad we are planning to be under a roof.

My daughter coached me on making hard cooked eggs in the instant pot and I converted. Put 1 cup water in instant pot, add wire rack and eggs. Lock on cover, manual setting for 5 minutes. Let it sit an additional 5 minutes undisturbed. When time is up, lay a folded towel over vent for steam protection and using a wooden spoon (or spatula) push the lever to release pressure quickly. Remove cover when pin drops. Use tongs to move eggs into ice water for 5 minutes then transfer to container in refrigerator. It’s the 5-5-5 method. I’m expected to bring deviled eggs to family birthday parties.
