Garden of Quilts Show Wrap Up

Our quilt show was really fabulous, and a huge success judging by the number of people who came and the complements we were getting as guests left. I have just a few more quilts to show of ones that caught my eye, but not nearly the number I wanted to photograph. I just ran out of time. This view is from the balcony at the back of the hall looking toward the entrance. The quilts hanging from the railing above the floor are all Quilts of Valor in a special display.

The Best in Show award went to Susan Marra for her Flower Rama quilt, with applique and extraordinary quilting.

Just look at the smooth edges on her needle-turn appliques. The cross hatch quilting in the border and middle has near perfect lines and scale. Compare that to the cross hatched center section where the scale is so tiny!

In the corners of the center section, feather fronds break up the straight lines.

Here’s the upper edge. Note the tiny flowers and details.

The center detail is amazing.

This quilt is made of silks and satins, velvet and lace, handkerchiefs and beading. It is called Stylish Handbags by Patty Votruba.

I was charmed by her use of beads to create handles for the bags, along with little details to the luxurious fabrics.

It is custom quilted too, with each element of the quilt getting its own treatment. Echo quilting is done around the bags, while the borders had leafy designs. Fussy cut motifs like the roses on this purse, along with handkerchief edges made each purse unique.

This lovely small quilt was only about 16 inches square. It is called There Is Always The Garden by Barbara Ruff. Note how she wove the background with ecru color fabrics, such an interesting technique! Hand embroidery and buttons created the flowers, with applique butterflies.

I am always captivated by autumn themes. Linda Lou Harris created this stunning wall hanging with wool applique on cotton fabrics.

Custom quilted, it won a third place ribbon in its category.

It seems that I am drawn to asymmetric designs lately. This Alphabet by Natalie Rockley is a traditional style with individual block designs. Even the filler blocks are all unique.

There was just so much to see and do. Sensory and inspiration overload.

I didn’t buy any fabric at the show. But I did find this adorable mug and sewing machine mat in the Quilters Shoppe. I do not know who made it, but it is so cute!

It was an awesome show, especially since we live in such a small town. With so much to inspire, time to get back to the sewing room! I worked on the Project Linus quilts this week, and maybe I can come up with a new design soon. I’ll be having a sample sale soon for some of the things I put in the Quilt Shoppe that didn’t sell. I just realized that with all the attention I have given to the show planning, charity quilting, out of town trips, and other things, I have very little for the fair this year. I need to get busy!

Dear Carole, thank you for sharing these gorgeous quilts, they are exceptional. Wow, some people are just brilliant at making treasures!

I like the award ribbons too. All of these have been very creatively hand made. That is so lovely

I just did a quick “walk-through” and that took 15 minutes! Now to go back and truly admire the work. Such attention to detail – speaking of – the Bunny quilt peaking in the picture of the fabulous Autumm quilt. All of them are so beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing these.

The quilts are really beautiful, but that bag quilt is exquisite!  I love the detail. I’d love to see that one in person.  Cute sewing machine mug rug too.

Sensory overload, for sure! I can just imagine! The Best of Show quilt is amazing. I always wonder how long it takes for a quilter to do all that. Your mug and mug rug purchases are cute as can be!

So glad I’m not a judge! The Best of Show is exquisite, such beautiful quilting, and of course the spectacular applique. Quilt Club this week was demo derby day; hexies, wool work, & 3 styles of hand quilting. Only one more meeting before the year end picnic then we’ll take the summer off. Apparently some people have other pursuits!

    Carole,

You did a great job capturing the detail in the Best in Show quilt. That quilt wows me. Compliments to the maker!

The 16” quilt with the woven background captured my attention. What a great way to add texture to a background! I noticed what might be fabric tethering the woven part to the first border.

Thanks for sharing this eye candy!

Kudos to you and all of the people who worked on the quilt show.  Job well done and your pictures were spot on. Carolyn

  8. A Magnificent show indeed Carole! I enjoyed your photos so much and found them inspiring too! The woven background quilt was especially cool. I may have to try something like that.

Thank you for the pictures. I do not know how far you are from Rochester, Ny but I think a road trip to your Quilt Show is in order for another year. Thanks.
