Autumn Jubilee Quilt Along – Week 3

Are you caught up and ready for the next row?  This week for #AutumnJubilee2020 we do some leaves.  Note that the leaves are not the same size as either of the other rows.  I have deliberately made some variations in size for added interest in the rows.

The leaves row has five blocks with two spacers.  The blocks will finish at 9-inches.

Cutting instructions
Focus Leaf Fabric (cut five sets)
4-inch squares – 2
3-1/2-inch squares – 3
Strip 1-inch x 5-inches – 1
Background total for all five blocks
4-inch squares – 15
3-1/2-inch squares – 5
Sashing strips 9-1/2 x 2-inches – 2

Start by making the stem, using the leaf fabric strip and one of the 4-inch background squares.  Cut the square in half diagonally, and place on either side of the strip.  Sew and press, then square up to 3-1/2-inches.  Do five stems, one in each color.

On the back side of the remaining 4-inch background squares mark diagonal sewing lines 1/4-inch away from the center.  Using two per color, pair with the leaf fabric 4-inch squares and make half square triangles.

Lay out your elements as shown here.

Sew in rows.

Make five blocks.

Assemble the row with three blocks in the middle sewn together, then add the sashing strips to each end, and then the last blocks to each end.  Turn the stems in different directions.  DO NOT sew the rows together yet, we have more to add between them later.

Enjoying all the posts for the Autumn Jubilee. I am not caught up, but hope to get some sewing in this weekend. Have Aurifil on my machine right now.

I absolutely love this leaf pattern…so pretty and so versatile. Your color choices are so nice. What a gorgeous thread collection from Aurifil. I love their thread.

Ooh maple leaves, how lovely! One thing I am really loving about this year’s Jubilee QAL is the use of different sized blocks in the rows. It adds real interest to this project. Thank you Carole for ALL you have given us this year for Autumn Jubilee. It’s been an added niceness for my favourite season!

I love leaf patterns. I made a leaf quilt, I think 2 years ago, but it feels longer. Must be the 2020 effect. When Autumn Jubilee launched I first found the 2018 pattern & made a pumpkin & stars quilt. When AJ2020 finishes, there will be three fall quilts that all play together.

Your colours are gorgeous! I must confess, I’m too much of a control freak to participate in mysteries. I prefer to collect clues but wait until they’re over to actually sew, just so I can control a little better what colours go where. Love your Stars & Pumpkins mystery quilt!

  4. Judy

I really like the way you explain how to make the leaves. I’m going to try to make them this weekend. Thanks for your tutorials!

  5. Teri

I love Aurifil thread. It’s quite fine and doesn’t leave lint. Thank you Carole for introducing me to this wonderful product!

  6. Debbie Miller

I have chosen to get in some me time and sew the day away-so I’ll be making some fall leaves and watching the real ones cover my back yard through the window! Love your red and orange leaves and love Aurifil thread!

  7. Aurifil thread produces beautiful stitches on my machine. I love using it, but don’t have many colors. The assortment is wonderful! We took a “leaf-peeping” ride yesterday and saw many colors that are going into my blocks. And I have an idea now what to do with the tree blocks, so the sewing break was productive. Now on to the sewing room!

  8. Love the leaf blocks. One of my favorites!! Oh, I am going to have a hard time not going for scrappy leaves though….I may have to be a rebel.. 🙂 I use aurifil thread in my featherweight, which helps me keep it extra clean.

Your leaves are beautiful colors! I started using Aurifil threads two years ago. Aurifil thread is my favorite thread now. My fall quilt is on hold as I am making many masks for the Christmas season. Looking forward to finishing this Fall quilt.

  10. Not quite caught up. I’m still working on the stars. But, then again I’m working on 3 other QALs. Yup, I’m crazy! But Autumn Jubilee is my favorite! Thank you & your sponsors. Would love some Aurifil thread, my favorite.

Just finishing a rush project, then I’ll have time for some fall sewing of my choice. Love this. I use Aurilfil often. Thanks.

This quilt is going to be so lovely. I love maple leaf blocks and have made quilts and table runners with them.

  13. I enjoy using Aurifil threads for hand piecing and quilting. Thanks for such an amazing giveaway! I’m slowly making a block or two of your designs each week. Maple leaves are some of my favorites to make!

  14. Kathy E.

Aurifil threads are definitely top notch quality and I do use them when quilting. I’d love to have more of a selection of colors and weights.

Love Autumn colors, just right in the stars and maple leaf blocks!!
Making a few of your blocks each week.
Thanks for the quilt along, appreciate your creativity!!

  16. Viv

My, how the weeks fly by! I am just finishing the first row of stars. This 3rd week’s leaves should not take as long, sew will do these then do 2nd week’s row. Thanks for this sew along.

  17. Jean McKinstry

Lovely autumn colours, we get muted tones where we are, but in the fare south with their colder winters, the colours are equally dramatic. Super design again for your leaves.

  18. LaLani James

I am loving making this sew-along Autumn quilt! We don’t get much Fall color where I live in Florida so I have to get it in my quilting! I miss the beautiful Autumn days in Colorado where I grew up.
Aurifil thread is wonderful thread. Would love to win it!

  19. Kathy Harris

I love those colorful leaf blocks, I’ve made several wall hangings and a quilt with similar blocks. I need to try a few more.

  20. Tina W in Oregon

Aurifil is about the only thread I use. There’s hardly any lint and the 50 weight lasts a long time in the bobbin. Loving the autumn quilt but need to get caught up!

  21. Joan Sheppard

Working right along – I now officially have 5 quilts started and DUE FOR DELIVERY in one month (baby shower “Jack’s Chain”, Halloween, and 2 Sewing for the Kids plus this one. They all have their plastic bins and it looks like I’m moving – all packed up.
Did all the cutting together, all the blocks together, sewing the rows one by one, but loving this Sew Along. Never did one before! Thanks

  22. Bobbie

This quilt is going to be beautiful and your colors are gorgeous. Thanks for all the time you put into the quilt and for sharing your talents with us.

  23. Judyk

I love Aurifil thread! My quilt is still on the to do list, I have a couple of must finish projects that must be done soon.

  24. Aurifil thread is wonderful stuff! I went to the fabric store today to buy the pillowcase material, (Saturday’s is all finished :)) and somehow 3 fall fat quarters and 1/3 yard of pumpkin fabric JUMPED into my bag…my only recourse was to start the quilt…the four patches are half done and after I cut back ground I will be ready to work on stars. 🙂

  25. Melanie

I’m a little behind but will catch up before winter! LOL I love Aurifil thread, have used them for years. Happy autumn quilting and enjoying the colors of nature!

  26. Donna Flanery

Such interesting blocks so far. Love the leaf pattern. I’ve never used Aurifil thread, but I have heard great things about it.

  27. I purchased an older embroidery machine from someone because it fit my space perfectly and I love the idea of adding embroidered designs to quilts. This may be just the opportunity to try it out! And yes, I DO love Aurifil threads and neutrals spools are a staple.

  28. Brenda @ Songbird Designs

Love fall colors. Aurifil is the only thread I use for piecing! I’ve not tried it on my longarm, but my Solaris loves it!!

  29. Pam

Honestly, I haven’t gotten beyond pulling fabric for my leaves, but yours are inspiring me to make the time to get started! Thank you! As for Aurifil thread, my machine and I love it!

  30. js2222

I’m not making a quilt right now. I have to start smaller, and I can work up to a quilt!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  31. js2222

oops I forgot to answer about aurifil thread – I’ve never used it. I’ve always preferred rayon thread – it’s so nice & shiny!

  32. Debbie Miller Meyer

I just love how this is turning out. Now to my leaves. Thank you, Carole, and thank you Aurifil for the giveaway!

  33. Lisa England

I am very excited about sewing fall things right now! Your leaves are lovely. Thanks for the chance at the Aurifil threads, they are fabulous.

  34. Susan

Your maple leaves are so pretty. They remind me of ones I have picked up on my walks and pressed inside a book.

  35. Joan Whistler

I just found this Quilt-a-long and really love it! Fall is my favorite time of year. And yes, I love Aurifil thread too!

  36. I just made some maple leaves for another project, so I’m an expert now, right?! I love that you provide an easily printable instruction sheet. Thank you.
