Christmas In July Starts Today

Maybe it is the heat outside, but thinking about winter is a pleasant prospect for me right now. There are so many things we could play with for Christmas projects, some in fabric, some in paper, and some with a glue gun. A lot of bloggers are doing Christmas In July posts now, so let’s join the fun. I have a new project for you, a wall hanging that will hopefully surprise and delight you, while being a Stashbuster in more ways than one. That sew/quilt-along will begin on Tuesday. I haven’t yet finished the project myself, so I’ll be working along with you, trying to stay far enough ahead to get the photos and write the posts.

The main idea for talking about Christmas in July is to begin our sewing and crafting for gifts, along with stamping cards, giving us time to complete them before the holiday rush is upon us. It also is a great time to start new projects for decor that could also work as gifts. Today, I want to show you a roundup of ideas from past years, posts that newer readers will find new, and ones that long time readers may have forgotten.

Maybe you want a holiday quilt for the guest bed for a festive welcome. Sew one up fast with the Christmas Trip Around the World Quilt.  I finished this one in just days, before my mother in law came for Christmas a few years ago.

There are lots of ideas for Christmas Ornaments on the post using handwork frames, button covers, your embroidery machine, or cookie cutters.

See my previous Christmas Quilt Along to make this table runner, or use the blocks in a square for a topper. Using a table runner as a bed scarf gives you festive decor without taking up a lot of storage space.

My Christmas Hexagonal Table Topper free pattern is the most downloaded pattern from my blog and other websites where I have listed it. It has been downloaded over 75,000 times!

I did a series of posts to take a panel like this one and create three table topper designs that were quick and easy. See how I started, and the first project on the post Beginning the Christmas Panel. Then see the second runner project Christmas Runner in Red. Finally, the third runner, shown above in the first photo, Christmas Geese Table Runner.

Now is the idea time to begin a hand stitchery project for use this year. It takes time to stitch projects like these. This pillow stitchery is a discontinued pattern, but you can find all kinds of new ones on the internet. See my process on Christmas Redwork Pillow.

Now, for some gift ideas. All these are linked to the tutorials right here on my blog. Do you have a quilter on your gift list?  This Sewing Kit is easy to make, has no hand sewing, and can be used for a travel jewelry case too!  The link has a full tutorial.

Are you a stamper? I have been stamping Christmas cards for years, and have several posts to show you new ideas and techniques. Click on Stamping Christmas to see lots of card ideas including how to recycle elements from cards received, using punches to create cutouts, and embossing techniques. Stamping now allows you to be relaxed and creative, rather than rushed.

The post on the folded paper technique shows how easy this technique is to do – Iris Folded Christmas Cards.  The iris refers to the iris of a camera lens.

Make a Christmas Nine Patch Star runner. Or do it in other colors for every day use.

Are you a crafter, too? My post on making a Christmas Centerpiece will have you thinking about how you can use materials around your home to create a lovely piece for your holiday table.

A wool penny rug is quick to finish, and this Christmas one is my original design. See the post for the free pdf pattern – Christmas Wool Applique.

Small Christmas stitchery projects can be made into ornaments with just a bit of sewing time. If you don’t have handwork to frame like this, use your embroidery machine to stitch out some Christmas motifs. See my post on Christmas Stitchery with Ideas for Finishing for more ways to make ornaments from your handwork or machine embroidery.

If you have an embroidery machine, it is easy to make a wall hanging using four motifs. I did this one with Christmas Santa designs, but the same concept could be done with kitchen theme embroidery and prints for a kitchen wall hanging, garden designs for the gardener in your life, books for the reader, and so on. The only limit is your imagination. Here is a downloadable pdf with the whole pattern including fabric requirements and cutting from last week, and sewing instructions from this week – Christmas Embroidery Wall Hanging. This is a free pattern, and will remain free on the blog.

Need more ideas? Just click on my Christmas Category to see everything Christmas going back to 2014. Recipes, projects, quilt alongs, blog hops, tablescapes, gift ideas and much more. Let’s have some fun with Christmas in July!

Thinking about winter used to keep me cool in the old office without A/C where I worked. I pulled out a photo of me standing with a shovel knee deep in snow after a blizzard. It sort of worked, LOL. Forecast for today is 90° with 80°s & humidity for the next few days. It’s no wonder people dream of Christmas in July.

like you say so many talk of Christmas in July and I guess I am one of the few that never give it a though. I hate talking of Christmas that early as the season is so rushed all the time as it is I think. I believe in making a Christmas quilt or items when the mood hits you to do so

  4. Carole, there is a lot of inspiration in this post! I should start now making and buying gifts, but I do procrastinate just a little!
