Autumn Jubilee Quilt Along Begins

Today we begin the quilt along for this year’s Autumn Jubilee. We’ll work on it over the next month, with posts every Friday. In past years, I’ve done two blocks alternating in placement several times, then a row quilt, and a round robin. This year, the quilt will be your choice as to the size and placement, and we will have lots of block patterns.

Trying to come up with something new for this year was a challenge. I hope you like this idea of many different blocks. I did the basic idea in EQ8 and here is the design. The leaves and flying geese blocks will be a bit different in the pattern.

When I put mine together, I got the pumpkin blocks swapped and didn’t notice this until it was quilted. Here is mine. The top is 40-inches square with 12-inch finished blocks and a 2-inch border of background. I like this, but the pumpkins on the lower left should be swapped with the middle top so that the flying geese don’t come off the pumpkin stem.

This week, I’ll give you the cutting and sewing instructions for the leaf and flying geese blocks, along with the jar blocks. The tables give you the instructions for the number of blocks I have. Make as many as you like of each one, so you can easily make a larger quilt.

Download the first pdf – click on Leaves and Flying Geese.

See my post No Waste Flying Geese for a detailed tutorial. Here are mine using the Harvest Festival fabrics from Benartex.

For a detailed tutorial on the leaf block construction, see my post from a previous Autumn Jubilee – Autumn Jubilee Leaf Blocks.

The flying geese blocks have background strips added to the sides, then the leaf blocks are sewn together and added to one side.

Note that the three blocks have the leaf stems pointing in different directions and the flying geese pointed differently.

Next, download the pdf for the jar blocks, click on – Mason Jar Blocks. These are just snowball blocks with jar lids added. Complete instructions are in the download. Make one block with a large and small jar. Note that I forgot to put the corners on the small jar, and I didn’t notice that until I was writing the pattern. Oh, well, it looks fine.

Two blocks have two medium jars. Use several colors for the jars.

Here is the quilt along schedule –
October 6 – (today) – Flying Geese/Leaf Blocks, Mason Jar Blocks
October 13 – Apples and pumpkins blocks
October 20 – Assembly and Quilting
October 27 – Finishing and Label

Have fun sewing this week!

I really like getting an overview of the proposed quilt before I commit to the time and money involved. One of the projects from a previous year is now on my bed, and I look forward to this project on a somewhat smaller scale. Carolyn

  2. Such a cute design for this year. Looks like it includes a lot of elements we may see again. I just love the plaids in the Benartex line—really adds a cozy vibe. I didn’t notice the oops! My eye isn’t as sharp of late—which is why I had an oops on my felt work project! But no worries, as it all will work out. I would pick The New Arrival Bundle at Madam Sew. Ihave always wanted a wool press mat and the other two tools look like they would be very handy for hems and bindings. Thanks for such fun on AJ!

  3. Joye Cox

I would like one of the bundles featuring the wool pressing mats. I’ve been wanting to try them. Thanks!

  4. Your fabrics in your quilt are wonderful. I would have never noticed the errors had you not pointed them out. Very “fallish” looking.

I’d love that wool mat bundle.

Oops. Forgot to answer the question I was so excited about the quilt. I have been wanting wool pressing mats so that would be my choice

  5. Diann@ Little Penguin Quilts

This looks like lots of fun, Carole! I love sewing pumpkins and leaves and flying geese this time of year. On Madam Sew’s site, I’m interested in the Golden Precision bundle. Always trying to make my piecing more precise!

    1. Teresa Spohn

Beautiful quilt pattern! I like quite a few of the Madame Sew bundles. Especially the comfort sewing bundle.

  6. Cathy Basaran

Love how you’ve incorporated the canning jars with other fall elements in your quilt.
I’ve had my eye on some quilt storage bags!

  7. Oh this is the post I’ve been waiting for. I’ll spend my Friday evening pulling fabrics! From the MadamSew website, I would like the Precision Cuts Bundle. One can never have too many blades, rotary cutters or scissors! Thank you, Carole.

  8. Even though I don’t quilt, I am grateful to you and all of the quilters for keeping this amazing art alive! My beloved mother was a talented quilter!

  9. Melanie Bowman

The comfort sewing machine bundle looks useful! I was just cussing my foot pedal yesterday as it kept sliding away from me despite having a “sticky” mat underneath it.

Your block designs are wonderful! I’m hoping to carve out the time to participate!

My favorite bundle from Madam Sew is the Mat and Stand bundle.

Sending creative and persevering energy your way! Rock on!

  11. Connie S Wolfe

The Mason Jars on the quilt are just cute! My choice is the Comfort Sewing Machine Bundle although so many of the bundles are great ideas.
    Thanks again,
    Connie W.

This is really a lovely quilt design! Your Autumn Jubilee is always such an amazing collection of pure inspiration. A generous gift to your readers! I’m still not sewing much yet so I will stay out of the drawing. Happy Fall!

I love Madam Sew. I think the Quilting Rules bundle looks like a great addition to my quilting tools.

The quilt along is so pretty. I will download the patterns, not sure I can keep up. We will be on the road for a couple weeks in October. I’ll play catch up when we get to our winter place

Thanks for a fun autumn jubilee

I like this quilt. Very different and I’m going out of my comfort zone with flying geese. This one will definitely be a challenge for me. I need to make a king-size if this. I visited Madam Sew and would like the Clip and Clamp Bundle. Never saw clamps like that! Thanks to Madam Sew for the generous gift certificate giveaway and thank you, Carole, for all you do. Much appreciated!

  15. I love the spool and bobbin organization AND the 3 muffling mats. Nice that they are bundling things that are popular purchases together. Carole this quilt is TERRIFIC. I love all of my Autumn Jubilee projects over the years, and will start this as soon as I can “cut fabric” again. 😉

  16. It’s hard to make a decision! I like The Golden Precision Bundle! Who doesn’t want and need more precision and then a golden cutter and blades! Yippee “

  17. Carolyn Montgomery

I like the Quilt Storage Bundle; Ihave purchased several of these bags and really like them. Thanks for the chance to win

  18. Donna Flanery

I love, love this new quilt top. You are so creative. With these old eyes, I think the bundle that would be most beneficial for me would be the Legendary Lights bundle. The Quilt Storage bundle could also be very beneficial. Madam Sew has great products. Appreciate that they sponsor Autumn Jubilee.

  19. Joan Sheppard

Thanks! This looks fun! Just the thing for people who are canning and making jams out of the bounty. I have a couple of quilts on the final stage of quilting/binding that need to be turned in Wed. for charity for them to start the Christmas baskets.

  20. I love your pattern, and I can see your point with the pumpkin and the flying geese, but it is a fabulous quilt. Taking off for Ireland, so I won’t be sewing for 2 weeks. We will see if this calls my name after time on the old sod….Meanwhile, I am torn between the mat & stand bundle and the precision bundle….my mat is a little old!

  21. Deb

Madamsew as some very creative products! I would like to the lighting bundle, the Janome lights are not the best..

  22. lee

Oh I do like these quilt blocks! I love the look of the Ultimate Pressing Mat bundle. I have been wanting to try out a wool pressing mat! Hope your weekend is great! Sweater weather here in MI!

  23. Ellen Miner

My favorite bundle from Madam Sew is the mat and stand bundle, though the quilting display bundle is a very close second. Having just purchased a photographer’s backdrop stand for my quilt guild, the quilt hangers would be perfect for displaying our show and tell quilts (especially your latest quilt along quilt!!)

  24. Kresti Lyddon

Thanks so much Carole, for doing the Autumn Jubilee! I look forward to it each year! My favorite bundle from Madam Sew is the Golden Precision Bundle – it has so many tools I would use.

  25. Nancy C

Such a lovely quilt!! I need a new rotary cutter, so I would probably choose the TRIPLE CUT DELIGHT ROTARY SET, but the rulers look great too.

  26. vivoaks

Of all the bundles, I think the Storage Bundle is what would be most needed by me. 🙂 I’m a bit of a slob when it comes to my sewing stuff, and if I had places to keep things, I might have a better shot at keeping my sewing area neater. Thank for the chance to win!!!

  27. kattails

Yikes!!! If you saw my sewing room you’d know I need the Storage Bundle! (I’m really glad you can’t see it…lol). With the chilly weather here it’s a perfect time for me to straighten up and get ready to sew this winter. I’m “sew” looking forward to the QAL this year….

  28. Nancy W.

The Ultimate Pressing Mat Set would be my first choice. I found your site for the first time today, via FQS.
