National Quilting Month – Oh, My Strippy Stars!! Quilt Along

Today, we begin a free quilt along for National Quilting Month. I’ve wanted to do something with these jelly roll strips for quite some time. So, when Fave Quilts asked me to be a part of their month long event with giveaways, I thought it was time to design something to use them up. What’s more, I am going to do a quilt along, with a series of tutorials for each step along the way. You can make this size, a nice table topper or lullaby quilt at 42-inches square, or you could double the number of blocks for a lap quilt at 5×6 blocks (with 2 left over for placemats), about 52 x 62 before borders. Either way, ready to quilt along?

Some of you may be able to forge ahead with just the pattern. For those who want to take a more leisurely pace, or that need those extra photos and tutorials, we’ll have a post every Tuesday in March. You’ll need a jelly roll or 2-1/2-inch strip roll, plus a yard of background fabric. Don’t have a jelly roll? Order one from Fat Quarter Shop today to have it in time for the project. See all the fabulous prints and colorways, many on sale, just click on Jelly Rolls and Rollie Pollies at Fat Quarter Shop. You can also cut width-0f-fabric strips from your stash, and get a bit farther on your Stashbusters Challenge at the same time. I’ll be using the Tucker Trimmer in a speed technique you may like – the ruler is available at Fat Quarter Shop. But I’ll also show you how to do the cuts with your square up ruler, it just is a bit more effort. I’ll be showing you how to do two speed-piecing techniques with strips.

Here is the schedule
March 1 – Today! – Overview – pattern (download below) and cutting (third paragraph of the pdf)
March 7 – Four patch units
March 14 – Jelly Roll HST units
March 21 – Block assembly
March 28 – Quilt assembly, final sashing and finishing

This pattern will work with any colorway you like. I did mine in purples and greens for spring. I mocked it up in EQ8 for you to see some other ideas. How about Christmas?

Or maybe Autumn, or Halloween?

Or a variety of soft pastels for spring.

Or go the opposite way, with brights on black.

  1. Such a pretty quilt top and I absolutely LOVE all of the color mock-ups, Carole!!! They make me want to jump right it with that new jelly roll I got in the mail last week. SEW many projects already on the go, though! What’s a quilter to do??

Looking forward to the quilt along. I printed the pattern, my jelly roll and ruler are on the way from fat quarter shop. Where do I find today’s tutorial on cutting? Looks like a fun project

I was able to download the pattern which gives instructions for the entire quilt but not able to find just over view, pattern and cutting. Could you please help me with instructions. Thanks

    1. The overview is today’s post, showing you what the pattern will look like and give you color ideas. The pattern download is on the post, click on the link in the post “Oh, My Strippy Stars” (just under the last brights on black example) and it will open in a new window. You can print or download from there.

I have been looking forward to this. I actually have 2 different jelly rolls that I have been looking forward to using so I may just have to make 2!

Absolutely stuning with Easter right around the corner! Since I mostly do charity quilts, we love the fast and easy quilts that are stunning! I’m so anxious to get to the next step of the quilt-along like a kid with birthday money! I just finished a Disappearing Nine Patch and my brain is exhausted. Thanks!

I realize many of these sponsors are links of yours, but I do resent trying to enter contests and having to answer “just a few more questions” covering a wide range of topics, while they “confirm” my entry. I will enjoy making the quilt but will pass on the contests.

    1. None of the contest giveaways are my sponsors, they are on Fave Quilts, and wholly their promotions. Fave Quilts is not an affiliate of mine. I provided the information on the giveaways solely for informational purposes for readers to enter if they wished. I was not aware that they asked multiple questions, so sorry about this. I have passed your comments along to my contact at Fave Quilts.

      1. From Jennifer Hendrix of Fave Quilts – “Regarding the comment from a reader: You do not have to continue answering questions for giveaways. The entry is confirmed automatically upon submission of a short form. We have ads in place that come after entries are counted, but they are entirely optional for readers to engage with. This reader may have missed the “skip” option. You can suggest that readers just ignore those ads in future.”
