Cradle Quilts Update

This past week, I was able to move other projects along and find a day to make a few cradle quilts. I combed through some of my project bags with leftover bits from other projects, like this one with HSTs left over from Scrap Dance Quadrille. I had enough to do some pinwheel blocks.

I sewed the pinwheel blocks, practicing my seaming through the ‘x’ for sharp points.

Adding some large yellow squares, I laid out the elements for web method construction.

This makes the assembly go very fast.

In short order, I had the block done.

Pulling another bag, the leftover elements from Scrap Dance Twist were enough for another little quilt. All I had to add was a bit of background.

This block with the corner four-patches went together quickly as well.

I loaded these two, along with the three more I showed before, and quilted them all on the same background.

I did the quilting with just free motion loops, tacking the edges down as I went.

I used white Glide thread on top, and white Bottom Line in the bobbin.

The thread blended well with all the colors on the little quilts.

Then it was on to the binding step. I made binding in colors to complement each one.

Five little quilts to donate were added to the delivery.

Then, I had a number of packages arrive over the past couple of weeks. Terry K sent these two cradle quilts, designed by her granddaughters. Wonderful to contribute to this charity event, while teaching the joy of quilting to another generation.

Chris L sent in three quilts, made from an unfinished baby quilt.

Linda B and Deb S sent in three quilts each in bright colors and fun designs.

Last Thursday, I took the first delivery to the committee chair. She was blown away that I had 73 quilts for the woodworkers!!

That was only possible with your help! When I got home from the meeting, the director had sent an email saying that all the little quilts were wonderful, and thanking us for them. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the project so far, those with cradle quilts in progress, and everyone who is helping out. Amazingly, the very next day, I received 9 little quilts from Sandy O. We are on our way to another great month of collecting for the next delivery. Thank you, Sandy, the cowboys and baseball motifs are particularly appreciated.

The project will go on until November 9. See the Cradle Quilts project page if you’d like to get involved. What do you think of our project so far? Are you planning a few cradle quilts to ship next month?

Wonderful response to the cradle quilt campaign! And Carole, your quilting on the ones you made is beautiful. I wish I could be able to free motion like that. If you have any tips on skill building, please let me know.

This post just made my heart sing! I loved ALL the little cradle quilts sent to you by your loyal subscribers. I’m just sorry I couldn’t participate in this project but I have too many irons in the fire at the moment. That said, I hope to join in on future endeavors, Carole.

I just sent a box yesterday with a few cradle quilts. What a fun project for me and what a terrific project for those deserving children.

  7. Roseanne blogged about your project. I knew I could do one, even though I’m a slooooow quilter! I challenged myself to do two and have them in the snail mail by mid-October. They are packed and ready to be posted on Monday! Thank you for this opportunity to contribute – kids need all the softness they can get!
