Autumn Jubilee Quilt Along – Block A

The part of Autumn Jubilee you’ve been waiting for is here!  The Quilt Along starts today!  Get those sewing machines ready, as we also have two more sewing projects to come as well.  This year for the quilt along, I have a fun idea that really works nicely as a table runner.  It is quick, and fast, so we will finish in just two weeks from today.  You’ll have a Harvest Star runner in time for Thanksgiving dinner, or make it in Christmas colors for holiday gifts.  I will show you the first block today, the second block next Friday, then we will put it together on the 25th.

So, since it is not a mystery, here is where we are going – a lovely star on a field of black.  The black background reminds me of the hard butterscotch candies we used to get at the dime store.  In Christmas colors, it might even look like a Christmas Cracker.  I like the enlongated star using the Tri Recs tools, but you may substitute any star block you like, with a black background, 12-1/2-inches unfinished.

Begin by cutting your star fabric in a strip 4-1/2-inches wide.  Place the ‘Recs’ tool on the edge and make the first cut.

Turn the tool around for the second cut.  You’ll need eight Recs triangles.

From a 4-1/2-inch wide strip of black background, cut 4 ‘Tri’ triangles.

Line up the larger base star fabric with the point of the background.

Press outward, then sew the other side.

You should have four of these units, square to 4-1/2-inches if needed.

Arrange the star points around a solid center, or a print center.  Add four 4-1/2-inch black background squares to the corners.

Sew in rows.  The block should be 12-1/2-inches at this point.

For the Harvest Star, I put a print in the middle.  I’ll use this same print in the Block B that I’ll show you next week.

It does beautifully in Christmas colors too.

For a small table runner, about 38-inches long, make one.  And to give you some more ideas, here are some additional colorways you might do.  Gotta love EQ8!  Go scrappy or controlled, use the colors you like best.  We’ll add borders later, too.

I hope you have fun with this idea!!

I want to let you know that I’ve loved reading all your comments on the Autumn Jubilee posts, some have warmed my heart, others made me laugh, all made me smile.  Thank you!  I am so glad you seem to be enjoying Autumn Jubilee!

It has also been fun to read all your introductions on Facebook in the sharing group.  Share your Autumn Jubilee projects in our From My Carolina Home Project Sharing Group on Facebook.  If you haven’t joined yet, be sure to answer the questions when you ask to join or the moderators may not approve you.  Someone sharing there will receive a special surprise at the end of Autumn Jubilee.  Anyone done the latest Teacup block yet?

  1. This is a lovely runner…I’m headed to my studio right now to pick my fabrics. I love this star set on point so I may make it smaller so that I can do that and stay within the size guidelines. Yes, it does look like a Christmas cracker to me…in addition to autumn batiks I think I’ll just go ahead and cut 2 for a Christmas runner as well. Thanks so much….and what a GREAT giveaway today. What could be better than getting a box of Aurifil?

  2. Janey

I am currently working on a star quilt for a friend. I would like to work on a fall table runner but I look outside and there is 3 inches of snow and more is predicted to come. And it is only 11 October. Brrrrrr. I am staying in and sewing.

    1. Lisa

Great yet simple enough table runner to get started working on! You always have such interesting ideas. And you must stay extra busy!

  3. stephzw

I’m doing a Jen Kingwell quilt, Spin Drift. it is really fun. Sorry to say i’m not using Aurifil. But I have some to try.

  4. Laura W Suich

I’m volunteering at our local quilt show this weekend. Hopefully Sunday will bring some sewing time. I would love to try the table runner. Quick and fun are my favorite projects. Thanks Carole.

  5. Janice Snell

Carole, thanks for the QAL. I am doing it in Christmas colour because Canadian Thanksgiving is this weekend and I don’t have time to get the runner done. I am entertaining 18 and have resigned myself to an hour of sewing daily for the next three days. Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

  6. I’ve been looking forward to your Autumn Jubilee quilting/sewing projects! My mind is swimming with possible fabric choices! I’ll have to wait to begin. I just got a call to babysit a sick 2 yr old neighbor. I see cuddles for my immediate future.

  7. I just finished a major sweater project. It was a commissioned sweater coat with colorwork, so there were lots of ends to weave in. I am ready for some fabric sewing! First on the list is to sew down the Velcro on the puppy’s coat, then I need to get back to work on my son’s red and black quilt. I designed it in EQ7–love that program!

  8. Pat

I’ve been testing some machine embroidery and need to start on my Bee’s quilt of valor blocks. Love the black and gold combination of your runner. Hmmm, I need one!

  9. lewisnancy54

I love your runners and the different fabrics that could be used for it. I have the tri rec ruler, and am always on the look out for a way to use it.

  10. Sharon Ray

I am currently making “Midnight Silhouette”. Don’t know if I’ll finished it this season or not! Thanks for the sew along.

  11. I have the Tri-Recs rulers. I’ve never used them. I also have the Jodi Barrows Square in a Square ruler which can be used for these pointy stars and make them using “strip units”. FUN!!

  12. lewisnancy54

I am sewing a pumpkin quilt. I thought I’d have it done by now, but maybe by Thanksgiving. I am following along on the Autumn Jubilee, and am going to participate with the generous projects.

  13. I am going to try to sew along with Autumn Jubillee, but I have a bunch of blog hop projects to work on for November! I am also trying to make some scrappy baby quilts.

  14. Debra Miller

Such a pretty table runner! I’ll be looking for both fall and Christmas prints in my stash as soon as possible.

  15. connie wolfe

Yesterday, I finished a Comfort Quilt for the local Ronald McDonald House with an appliqued monster and another with a Star Wars focus print. I hope to quilt and bind two other Comfort Quilts for the local hospice with red-white-blue themes over the weekend. Then, it’s on to embroidering new fall pillow covers. I am looking forward to seeing the completed runners in both the fall and the Christmas color ways!

I have some cross-stitch pieces I need to sew/finish to send to my sisters for their birthdays….

  17. Eileen Maher

I have Christmas fabric to use up, so I ‘ll be making a holiday tablerunner with your pattern! Right now, I’m working on my dear Jane quilt.

  18. s5821140gmailcom

this is one of the busyest family seasons of the year for me but it hope to get back to my machine and catch up with the table runner soon!

  19. Kathy Inozarks

Pretty design, I just finished up sewing wool cases for my fabric journals loved the way they turned out

  20. Diane H

Another great Autumn Jubilee, Carole! Lovely runner pattern. Yes, the first thing I thought was Christmas cracker when I saw it. I am currently trying to finish a paper pieced wall quilt then I would love to make your runner with Christmas fabrics.

  21. MarianneBarta

Oh my goodness — I can handle this runner for both Fall and Christmas!! Love it. Working on a scrappy Christmas quilt right now.

  22. Lovely table runner idea! And wonderful that it is quick and will be ready for holidays or gifting.
I’m working on a Straits of Mackinac quilt. Sewing HSt’s into 4 patches. I’m kind of on a mission with it so not sure if I’ll break away to make a table runner or not. I got distracted with some fabric re-organizing so who knows :-).

  23. Cathy B.

Fall sewing? I’m already started on Christmas! Although I did have a squirrel moment and bought some flannel Halloween prints for a rag quilt.

  24. Helen Glover

I am making a fall/harvest table runner with that exact same fall print that you have in yours. I love stars! This will be fun and easy to make during this busy time. Thanks!

  25. Joanne McA

Enjoying the variety of projects for Autumn Jubilee. Love the table runner, both the autumn and Christmas versions. Would love to try some of the beautiful Aurifil thread.

  26. Inspirational table runner. I definitely want to make it. As to what I’m sewing right now are actually Fall-themed machine embroidered placemats and dish towels and this Aurifil thread collection would be perfect. I realized I need more Fall colored threads!

  27. Maye

Loved your pattern for the table runner. Must make one in Christmas fabrics. I am busy sewing for the sales table as our quilting group is having our triennial Quilt Show in a few weeks. I have made some hexagon table centres from your pattern. Also making a Hexi quilt with 2 1/2 hexagons but not for the sales table. I have been making it for ages

  28. Sandy

I’m putting a quilt on the frame today, but once that’s quilted I plan to switch to some easy sewing like the quilt-along runner.

  29. Joy B

I’m not quite ready to sit at my sewing machine right now, I’m still getting over the knee replacement surgeries. I’ve been making a bunch of pumpkins from old flannel shirts (by hand) while I sit with my feet propped up and/or ice on my knee! I want to try the wool project, too. I hope to get to the fabric store tomorrow, for the first time in MONTHS! 🙂

  30. Sharon Beck

Thank you for such great directions and illustrations on how to create these wonderful star blocks. You make it so easy.

  31. Donna W

I have a star quilt that I started quilting on my long arm and I have 2 quilts to piece. I went to a retreat which had classes. I took 2 different classes and not I have to complete them. It was a fun retreat. I am planning on following along on your project, but have not started. Better get to it.

  32. Susan Stanton

I can’t wait to try this block with my tri recs ruler, which I’ve had for years, but haven’t used yet! I need to finish up a summer table runner, then I’ll try this cute star runner.

  33. Debbie Short

Thank you! My first Autumn Jubilee 💕 working on a quilt for my college freashman grandson! Making a Hunters Star with his college colors crimson & black!

  34. Gwynette in NW Arkansas

Cute idea for a table runner!! It would be nice in winter blues and patriotic colors, too. Thank you for taking your time to provide instructions and ideas to help ME with my Christmas list!

  35. Kathryn Laposata

As soon as I get through a weekend visit from grandchildren, I’ll put this on my list for next week. I always like to make table runners, so thanks for this small project. I already have the Tri-recs ruler, so it will be a snap. Happy Fall.

  36. Linda Douglas

Hi, this star table runner is so neat! Thank you! I’m working on a Baby Girl Charity Quilt today! I’m not sewing along with Autumn Jubillee, but like watching others! Enjoy your Blog so much!

  37. jarnspiger

This is my first time following along with you. Love the Autumn Jubilee block. May make one for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.

  38. farmquilter

I am working right along with you!! I am trying to make a new-to-me pattern for a table runner for a Christmas gift. If I can’t get this pattern right, I’ll be substituting your pattern!! Love it! Thanks for another awesome giveaway!!

  39. Judy Stolz

love the pattern, wish I had time to make it for Thankgiving, but that comes this weekend so, I just have to decide which colors to use next choice..

  40. Brenda Ackerman

Hello Carole, This is a fabulous table runner and I look forward to making it! It is just going to take me awhile to decide what fabrics to use. LOL. Right now, I am quilting one of the Mystery Quilts that I have made from your pattern. For the life of me, I can not remember which one it is due to my brain. I will try and remember to post a picture later on. Have a fabulous day!

  41. Kathy E.

I wish I had more time to sew right now! On my sewing room floor (my design wall), I have several half square log cabin blocks made from scraps. They are lined up to make a lovely table runner, but I’m not sure when I’ll get back to it!

  42. Judyk

Since I have 5 projects going on right now I don’t need to start another. Doesn’t mean I won’t cave, but I’m trying not to. 🙂

  43. Teri

The autumn colors of the Aurifil thread collection are beautiful! I’ve been working on a gold, beige and black throw for our couch. Those colored threads would really spice it up.

  44. Sharon Aurora

I haven’t decided if I will participate or not. It depends on whether I have the time and/or the right fabric for it. Right now I’m working on several projects.

  45. Lovely block. I need more practice using the Tri-Recs combo rulers. I’m currently putting borders on a quilt from the Diamond Lane pattern by Tara Miller.

  46. Debbie B

Love this star block. I will get right on this. Maybe make more than one. Thanks for all the optional colorways. I am currently putting the binding on a quilt for Hospice. The Aurifil threads look yummy. Thanks for the giveaway!

  47. I am always in the wrong season… I am quilting a QOV…red white and blue. Ha! But it’s been on my docket for sometime and I just wanted to get it out the door! Thanks for the great tutorial, but no, not doing the quilt-a-long. Just getting the UFO done!

  48. Karen H

Currently working on a wall hanging but am going to start your table runner this week!! thanks for all your tips and ideas – love your blog

  49. Camille

I always look forward to the Autumn Jubilee… the star table runner reminds me of wrapped piece of caramel with twisted ends. Thanks for the pattern.

  50. Luckily enough my guild offered a workshop with Edyta Sitar that I attended so I’m currently sewing “Spools”of thread and have given thought to making one at least an Auriful one with orange for its spool, I May use a red or grey colored spool too as I love Aurifil threads.
    Fantastic giveaway, thanks.

  51. Right now I am not working on anything, due to time restraints. But I have to say that I love the runner – so versatile! And I love Autumn Jubilee! I follow it every year. Thanks!

  52. Well, thanks for the Jubilee!! I have two small quilts I need to quilt and bind and I will be stitching a purse/bag this next week. Have limits on what I can stitch due to Carpal Tunnel recovery.
    xx, Carol

  53. JennyM

Nice table runner. It would be a good project for practice using those rulers. Right now I have three projects that need quilting and binding. I would rather be piecing something new!! Thanks for all you do for Autumn Jubilee.

  54. Susan Gray

I am not working on Autumn Jubilee as I have way too many other projects going. My biggest project is a throw quilt with lots of appliqué.mi have just another few pieces to sew in the border then I will hand big stitch it.

  55. I currently have two queen tops ready to be quilted (one loaded and ready to go) as well as a wall-hanging (a Christmas gift). If I can get caught up this week, I’ll be joining in soon!

  56. Nancy C

of course I am following along 🙂 The Table Runner is beautiful. I love the fall colors. Right now I am trying to finish my Moda Bakeshop At the Seashore quilt.

  57. Nancy D

I am finishing a birthday quilt, hopefully. I just found you this morning, but I intend to come back and check it out!

  58. Connie Boulay

Wish i was home so I could start this now! But I did put it EQ (because I put everything in EQ that I am thinking of making), and have been playing around with ideas there.

  59. Karen A

Don’t have time right now to join in the fun. I am working on finishing a quilt for a friend starting chemo next week.

    1. Laura M

Ps I’m working on a weekly block called 52 weeks 52 blocks for Canadian Quilters guild, Do hope to do this table runner as I love the star.

  60. Pam

Thanks for the informative post! Your table runners are beautiful! I made a baby quilt last weekend and discovered that I have enough fabric left over to make another one, so I’m working on that. I love it when I can use up my scraps. Thanks again for Autumn Jubilee!

  61. Patricia Evans

I’m working on my Step 2 blocks for the Seeing Stars Sew Along with Diane Knott and also catching up on the Tiny Tuesday blocks with Angela at So Scrappy. I want to dig out the pumpkin blocks I made for Autumn Jubilee two(?) years ago and actually sew them together for a small wall hanging. The weather was so nice here, sunny all week, that I spent most of the week outside to season end chores.

  62. Barb K

I have the Tri Rec rulers–good time to try them out–Thanks for all your ideas. (I am just sewing the blocks together for Scrap Dance Minuet).

  63. Beth Talmage

Because I’m not able to work at my sewing machine right now, as I tend to a dog who is recuperating from surgery, I am making orange peel appliqué blocks. It’s my first time doing needle-turn appliqué and I’m surprised at how much I’m enjoying this!

  64. Amy L

I am currently making binding for a college quilt. After I attach it, I will be making a baby quilt on commission. Hopefully, I’ll get that done quickly so I can play along with the Autumn Jubilee quilt-a-long!

  65. Diane Nickerson

I love the versatility of this pattern; it could be used for any time of the year with a simple change of fabrics! Awesome.

  66. Karen Williams

I love the elongated stars! I remember buying one of these rulers years ago. I’m going to have to go dig it up!

  67. Susan S

I’m not able to do this runner now as I have two baby gifts to finish. But I like the runner for other seasons.

  68. This runner is so sweet! The other day I was thinking of those same candies. When I was shopping I saw some and they had to find their way in to my shopping cart. You know I was disappointed. They just don’t taste as good as I remember. Neither do the ribbon candy we got in our stocking as a child. Is my memory playing tricks on me?

  69. I almost forgot. I am not quilting along since my left arm is still immobilized after having shoulder surgery, but I am reading along and enjoying this month long bundle of crafting goodness. Thank you for helping me not die of boredom! 🥴 Carol

  70. manasotavacation

really like this runner! What a nice gift for Christmas…..and one for MY table for Thanksgiving.
    Thanks!

  71. Isis Elisbeth Pluut

Lovely runner. Am currently making a Christmas quilt and in between need to make an autumn runner, your pattern is just perfect.

  72. I am going to make this runner into a miniature square table topper….I think! I made some paper templates for the the points, so we’ll see how it goes. I bought a charm pack of Harvest Berry from Benartex at the quilt shop last week just for this! 🙂

  74. dezertsuz

I like the original with the gold star the best, but it makes a lovely runner in any color. Thanks for the idea! I almost always use Aurifil, and buy it on a cone now.

  75. Laurel

Love the table runner. I am working on a star quilt and also a Vintage Remembrance one. I always use Aurifil and love the quality of the thread. Looking forward to the next block!
