Denim Jacket Refashion with Lace

After finishing the previous denim jacket (Denim Jacket Refashion) using the embroidered panels, I was charged up to do another one to put in the guild shop at our upcoming show. Working on the second denim jacket, I had a lace collar that I thought might be a nice addition. But, when I placed it on the yoke, it just didn’t fit right.

Two small lace hearts are the perfect size to adorn the front pockets.

At the bottom, I used a flat lace with a pretty edge as a replacement waistband.

Start with folding the raw edge under, then attach to the inside of the jacket. Wrap to the outside, enclosing the raw edge, and topstitch to the jacket with a quarter inch seam allowance on the outer jacket side.

Then, for the yoke, I flattened it out to measure the size of the area.

I purchased a length of garment lace 9 inches wide. The great thing is that this lace has a bit of stretch to it, so it will move with the body as it is worn.

It is placed with the pretty scalloped edge showing along the bottom past the yoke seam.

The sides are folded under and pinned.

Fold under at the top seam. Although it would have been nice to have the scalloped edge show here, the angle of the seam made that impossible.

Topstitch the lace in place as close to the folded edge as possible.

Continue around the armscye.

Across the bottom, stitch a straight line along the seam, leaving the scallops on the outside.

Now the scary part, make a cut in the yoke from the inside and begin cutting away the denim being very careful not to cut the lace.

Carefully trim the denim leaving about a quarter inch seam allowance on the denim. Then cut the excess lace from the underside.

When finished, the lace is see-through with the lovely scalloped edge at the bottom.

The last touch was to dress up the plain riveted buttons. I wanted to replace them, but they are too difficult to remove. So, I looked for a way to make them prettier.

I found some clear rhinestones in my stash, and glued one to the center of each button.

From the back, the lace accents work well together.

The front side is pretty cute too.

The lace wraps over the top of the shoulder and shows on the front.

I had planned to sell this one, but it is so cute I may have to keep it. This denim jacket is lighter weight than the first one I made, and may be more wearable with the white. I also like the gathered puff sleeve. I think it looks less ‘western’ than the other jacket.

So, I have one more jacket to do, and I am going to make it with white lace as well. That one will definitely be for sale at the guild show. I plan to use the same garment lace on the yoke in the same way as this jacket. I just need to figure out the additional embellishments. I’m thinking of pricing them at $25-30, what do you think?

I like your lace additions to your denim jacket. It is very cute. I also have a denim shirt that has faded around the collar. I’m planning on piecing another replacement collar from scrappy fabrics and sewing it to the shirt. I’m not sure about other additions yet.

That is so cute! I would never try making something like that! Definitely keep this one and sell the other one (cute too) for $30. That is a bargain!! Mary Anne

Haha! I predicted, as I read, that you wouldn’t be able to part with this second denim jacket refurbish! Too pretty! $25-30 is a very reasonable price! Looking forward to the next reveal!
