This is a sweet little quilt design that is workable in just about any theme. It finishes at 34-1/2-inches, which is great for a kidlet quilt. In other colors, it would be great for older kids, or even a large table topper. The basic design is the same as the Fall Fortnight Pumpkin Spice wall hanging, but the sizes are larger and is made with half square triangles rather than flying geese. I didn’t take as many process photos as I usually do, but I’ll try to show the individual steps as best I can with these.

Fabric Requirements
Center square – one 6-1/2-inches – fussy cut print, or embroidery
Sashing 1 – – 2 strips 1-1/2-inches x 6-1/2-inches
2 strips 1-1/2-inches x 8-1/2-inches
Half Square Triangles – four 5-inch squares scraps, and
four 5-inch squares very light background (forms the star around the center)
Corner patches – four 4-1/2-inch squares
Sashing 2 – 2 strips 1-1/2-inches x 16-1/2-inches
2 strips 1-1/2-inches x 18-1/2-inches
Scrappy Border – thirty-two 3-1/2-inch squares
Sashing 3 – 2 strips 1-1/2-inches x 24-1/2-inches
2 strips 1-1/2-inches x 26-1/2-inches
Final Border – 2 strips 3-1/2-inches x 26-1/2-inches
2 strips 3-1/2-inches x 34-1/2-inches
Final size – 34-1/2-inches square
Apply Sashing 1 to the center fussy cut square sewing the shorter ones first on opposite sides, then adding the longer ones. Here I’ve used a corn print.

Make half square triangles by pairing 5-inch scrap squares with background squares, right sides together. Mark lines on the diagonal 1/4-inch away from center, then sew on the lines and cut apart. See my post Chain Piecing Half Square Triangles for a detailed tutorial. Trim to 4-1/2 inches square.

Arrange HSTs, corner patches and center square with sashing into rows. The background will form a star around the center. Sew the side HSTs together, then sew to the center. Sew the top and bottom of the section in rows. Sew rows together.

Apply Sashing 2 to the edges, shorter strips first on opposite sides, then longer strips. Mine is a cute little carrot print.

Sew two sets of 6 scrappy border patches in rows. Apply to opposite sides of quilt. Sew remaining scrappy border patches into 2 rows of 8 patches each. Apply to remaining borders of quilt.

Apply Sashing 3 to the edges, shorter strips first on opposite sides, then longer strips. This is the same background print as the star. Add final border.

Quilt as desired.

Bind using your favorite method.

Download the free pattern – Little Farmer Lullaby Quilt. Any theme of prints can be used. The scrappy border looks best with lots of different prints, but could be simply two alternating prints. Make the final border wider or more narrow to adjust the size to your liking.

I think it would be adorable in holiday prints for a table topper this season, or patriotic prints for summer celebrations next year. Your stash is the perfect place to start. Have fun sewing!
Thanks for the sweet pattern. I just love all of those delicate fabrics, but the yellow is what makes it so sweet! Your piecing instructions are so precise, which means if we sew right, it will all fit. Thanks.
Aww. Pretty, Carole. Thanks for sharing everything.
Yes! I can picture this in patriotic colors. I’ve saved this pattern and plan to use it as the center for a 40” x 60” Honor Flight quilt. A few more borders and it will be big enough.
Grateful for the pattern. Grateful for you.
Thank you, Carole. This size would also make a nice wallhanging, or could leave off border for a smaller WH.

Thank you for your pattern & sharing your talent! I love that you included notes about variations in both fabric choices & sizes.
Adorable! Love it! Thank you!
a “kidlet” quilt I smile at that term – some little one would love it
That is a sweet little quilt, Carole! I like the idea of fussy cutting something for the center of the star. I agree – that could work with any fun fabric!
adorable. Star quilts are my favorite. Thanks for sharing.

I have just the center square for Christmas. Thanks for the directions and all you hard work. Love your blog.
What a sweet little quilt. Our local NICUs asked the quilt clubs for isolette covers. If I add a bit to the borders it will match the 36″ they prefer. Thanks so much for the pattern.
Thank you for the pattern. I like all the prints you used in your quilt.
This is a cutie, Carole! You’re right — what a great baby gift that would be!
