Doing the Happy Scrap Dance

Well, if you heard a loud squeal sometime Sunday afternoon, that was me. I hit on a design for our Fall Fortnight, and I like it so much that I’m going to make several! Oh, now I cannot wait for October!! At this point, I think the event will begin on Sunday, October 13, and have three posts a week until Sunday, October 27. I have some giveaway prizes, and maybe one or two more coming. The pattern will be free, and I’ll have a pdf download for you. It will use up your scraps, and you’ll need some background fabric. All those notes will be in the pattern when the quilt-along launches.

So, it is back to the sewing room after picking up all my entries from the fair yesterday. I got there early, and had a little picnic with a friend as we were working together for quilt pick up. I collected all my entries, checked out then worked a 3 hour shift. When I got home, I carried everything inside, then began looking for my next project. I want to begin a project with this jelly roll, but the panel I want to use with it just doesn’t go. The strips are light, and the panel is really dark.

It is cute, though. The fabric I got at Foust might lighten it up a bit.

The panel could be cut apart with turkey blocks filling in. It needs to be wider and not quite as long. Half of the lower edge is hanging off the table at the bottom of the photo.

I finished the quilting on the Quilt of Valor. I’m now working on the binding. I like having handwork to do while watching sports on the weekends. The top maker is letting me have the quilt for a car club member presentation early next year. So, I told her I could finish the binding and put the label on it. Then I’ll store it until we have all we need. If you’ve made some star blocks, I can use them now.

While we are on the subject of online classes, something else I’ve been considering is doing Zoom Virtual retreats again. I stopped doing these when interest seemed to go down, and the paid plan on Zoom went up. But, I find I am most productive when I have other quilters and sewists to chat with, as it keeps me sewing and not loafing off distracted by other things. If you are interested in doing a Virtual Retreat, let me know in the comments. You don’t have to sew, you could paint or knit, or piddle around organizing your craft room, just have a cup of coffee and chat, or whatever you like. I’ll look at holding one both on a Saturday when I have a free day, and one during the week. Let me know also which you would want, or if either would work. Would $5 for a 6-hour retreat be a fair price? I’m not looking to make money on this, only to partially cover the cost of the Zoom plan which has gone up to $160.

I worked on getting more fall decor out over the weekend. I have sold and given away so much of my stash, that I need to stretch what is left a bit to have fall displays in the usual places. This was my early fall table last year, but I have since donated the gold square plates back to the thrift store.

Last year’s Autumn Jubilee tablescape featuring Mason jars was fun, and I’ll always keep those leaf plates. I love those! They were a Pier 1 find several years ago, and I get them out every fall. I will do my fall table for this year sometime this week and share that when it is ready.

I think I sold these placemats too. But you can make your own with the free pattern on the post Autumn Jubilee Sewing Project – Placemats. Post has a free download with the pattern details, and the post is a tutorial.

We have a couple of evening dinners this week, and big car show coming up on Saturday. The big announcement for our Worldwide Quilting Day will be Thursday, and I can’t wait. I found some fun things to help us get everyone revved up to participate. Today, it is supposed to rain all day, so I am planning a full day of getting progress made on my Fall Fortnight projects. One will involve some embroidery, and I’ll be getting out my rayon threads and winding some bobbins for that first. If you do embroidery, see What’s New at Sulky Threads and Stabilizers, new deals every few days, plus check out the clearance section. Get the Sewing Is My Jam embroidery design here, too. You might want it for Fall Fortnight, as the project will work with lots of themes.

What are your plans for the week?

Just reading your plans got me going. I am at a retreat for two more days but I can’t wait to get home and reved up for fall Decor. Your enthusiasm is contagious!

I would love to do a virtual retreat. $5-$10 seems totally fair to cover costs. For me, most weekdays are better as the kids are in school and our Saturdays seem to fill up fast with sports and other activities.
I am having breakfast with my quilt group this morning to celebrate another successful quilt auction for our church then hopefully diving in to some UFO’s to finish them up and get my fabric count down. I’m excited to see the pattern you came up with!

Good Morning! I hope I can participate in the Happy Scrap Dance quilt along. I would be interested in the virtual retreat most likely on Saturday but I may be able to schedule on a weekday. I will stay tuned for details. Thank you for such amazing inspiration!

Having never been to a quilting retreat, I’m intrigued and would be willing to participate on a weekday.

Your post reminded me to get out my fall dishes. I never seem to remember those until Thanksgiving, luckily now I can begin getting use of them for the entire season. Thank you for that!

This week is a card making week. My Halloween cards are very involved this year, more than I wanted them to be, but they are beautiful IMO. I began my little mini-quilt and wall hanging of pumpkins and leaves and will continue those. Vet appt for my little Macy on Wed and Dr appt with hubby on Thurs.

    Have a fun week, Carole!

  5. Hi Carole, I am really excited about your Fall Fortnight-I can’t wait to see the projects! I have a lot of fall themed fabrics that I have been wanting to use. If you decide to do a virtual retreat I would like to participate in that as well. I could do any weekday except for Wednesdays. My calendar fills up very fast, I don’t know how I ever managed to work! Have a great day! Debbie

    Carole,

Retreat is my happy place! Count me in for a virtual retreat! $5 is a reasonable fee. My Saturdays should free up at the end of October.

I am preparing for an out-of-town retreat that starts Thursday. So much to do to prepare for time away and retreat.

Looking forward to your fall offerings!

    Jo Anne

  7. You’re a busy woman and a creative one. I’m not sure how much fall fortnight I’ll see — I think we’ll be away and I’m pretty sure I won’t be seeing blogs much. Pity — maybe I’ll try to catch some when I’m back. This week, Stratford Ontario for a couple of days (and the “other” London) and next week, packing and final lake trip of the year. I am SO not ready!

I look forward to seeing what you come up with for Fall Fortnight. I do love those placemats, might do a few of those if I get some time…I have a scrap set that would be perfect.

I am sewing for a blog hop that I will be featured on the 28th and going away for a few days this week for our anniversary. So, the top is done, quilting when I return. Then there is a hop in November I am doing with FQS, and I will need to get going on that! But, some of these scraps would make lovely placemats, and now I am thinking I could give them to my SILs at Christmas, we don’t exchange usually, but I have a lot to move on so this could be perfect!

A zoom virtual retreat sounds like a fun idea. Love your fall ideas and decorating. Cant wait to see what else you come up with.

  10. I love all seasons but think I like Fall best! I don’t do much decorating but have already pulled out my pumpkin table display.

A Zoom Retreat sounds fun. It seems I sew more productively when I have accountability or deadline. I’ve started some small Christmas gifts & a zoom retreat would be great getting me to make progress! Either Saturday or Weekday (or both 😉) would be fine.

Looking forward to your your Fortnight activities.

would you consider teaching free motion quilting/and doing pantographs? I don’t have a computer on my long arm and it looks like you’re proficient at it.

    Thanks,

    Liza

  12. I love the name “Fall Fortnight”. Isn’t it fun when a new idea just pops in your head? I’m happy to participate. Congrats on all your entries and all your ribbons. I like the way you organized all your entry categories, and didn’t limit yourself to one or 2. You are a talented lady!

I’m still confused but looked it up on google. It’s a fall festival with crafts, food and other fall outdoor activities according to them. Do you sell stuff that you make? Or do you have more like a retreat where you make stuff?

Oh Carole, fall fabrics are some of my favorites. I would love to know where i could purchase the fall panel, and the turkey yardage. Thank you so much
