As I mentioned on Friday, I have not been sewing in the past month. Instead, I’ve been spending all my free time (which has been precious little) doing crafting projects. I needed to finish making the cards I wanted to do for the guild show. I didn’t do as many as I had planned, but this will just have to do. The cards will be displayed in a basket for customers to look through. I made several with this sentiment, I think it is cute for a quilter.

I was excited to receive a phone call recently from an acquaintance I have not seen in quite a while. We used to belong to a quilting club together, but I left that club some years ago. She wanted me to come teach a class on cardmaking to her crafting group. Of course, I could not pass that up, LOL!! The class will be in June, and I need to do some planning and gathering before then. That will have to be after our quilt show in May. She is looking for simple, and these designs might fit that bill. The butterfly and sunflower themed one on the left could go to anyone, not necessarily someone who sews.

I had to finish my dragon ducks too. You may recall that I have made little yellow rubber ducks to put on MINIs with our club information tied on ribbons around their necks. I know that Jeep owners do this too, but MINI owners started it. MINI Ducking began in 2003, while Jeep owners didn’t start doing this until 2020.

I made a special card for some last December, and “Christmas Ducked” our member cards at our annual Christmas party.

Spring time means our annual MINIs on the Dragon event, where we gather around 500 people and over 350 MINIs all in one place to have several days of fun, dinners, Bingo, drives and sight seeing. I found some dragon ducks online, and decided to make some for this event to ‘duck’ a few more MINIs. I’m not the only one doing this, LOL, so my card had to be special.

I did the layout in a graphic design program, adding a dragon to the MINI with the duck. There are three styles of ducks, and I coordinated the ribbon color to the duck.

When I was done, I had 24 dragon ducks to play with. They went into a bag to keep in the car so I’ll have them when I find a car that I want to ‘duck’ during the event. The criteria is complicated, well, not really. It just has to have something that sets it apart from the other ones at the event, like an unusual color or graphics, a cute dashboard display, or a fun license plate.

Today, everyone is talking about Cinco de Mayo, an excuse to cook up some great Mexican food and have a margarita. Here are some of my recipes that you might need for today’s fun. Just click on the highlighted links to see the post and get pdfs of the recipes. First up, my sister-in-law’s Mexican Soup.

Try my Homemade Guacamole with Green Onions.

For a lighter meal, try my Taco Salad with a Crispy Baked Shell.

If you have some leftover pork make my Pork Quesadillas. You could use chicken or shrimp instead if you like. Or make them vegetarian with black beans. I like to serve them with sliced avocados and some chilled lettuce and tomato to add to the hot quesadilla.

The quilt show is coming May 17 and 18, and it is full swing with committee meetings and last minute planning. After the show, I’m planning to collapse for a few days, then get started on a new project with these lovelies, and cut some kits to take to retreat in July.

Happy crafting, sewing and eating! What are your plans for this week?

You are a busy lady with all of your crafting! I haven’t had breakfast, your food photos are making me hungry. Happy Sunday, Carole!
As if I’d need an excuse to have a Margarita! I think your cards will sell out, I’d buy a bunch if they were for sale at our show. You can always use a birthday or thank you card & (sorry Hallmark) handcrafted is always a bit more special. For me that seems to elevate the sentiment.
Your cards are all special, and I love the quilt ones! I didn’t know minis started the duck thing, the ones you made are so so cute! Every time I see a jeep I always look for ducks on their dash, I will have to start looking at minis too~ your car club events always sound like so much fun. Happy Cinco de Mayo Carole!

Wow! You may not be sewing but you surely are busy. I think handmade cards are so special and yours are lovely. Can’t wait to see the direction your dainty fabric selection takes. My sister and I have a sew day tomorrow. I think I will try your Mexican soup recipe. I like to have something in the crock pot when we sew all day long. Thanks for the recipe. A margarita will end the day perfectly.
That’s so exciting that they asked you to teach a card making class! I bet the group will really enjoy it. The rubber dragons are a cute idea for the Mini event, too! Happy Cinco de Mayo! Mexican food always appeals to me, but I don’t have any planned for today, so maybe tomorrow after grocery shopping. Have a great day, Carole!
How nice to agree to teach a card making class. I went to a free one at the local library, and the lady teaching brought tons of supplies. The only thing I wished she had taught us was “how to get started with the basic supplies”. Things you could shop for locally (like prefold cards/envelopes) papers, etc without thinking we needed to invest in expensive embossing machines etc. I eventually figured it out, and am a novice card maker. Maybe you can get IO to sponsor some supplies that they can “take home”. Our teacher was generous sharing her stamps, inks etc. Taco night for us today !
That is exactly the approach I am going to take, clean and simple designs that anyone can do with basic supplies. I have so much stuff that I will probably take them some things to add to their crafting collection to keep and use.
You are so creative! Your cards are treasures!
Carole,
Your cards are beautiful! The participants in your upcoming class will have a whole new craft opened up to them! Oh, the possibilities!
Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Busy day and just saw this and now I’m Hungry all over!!!!! (10 p. m.) Love your cards,I’m going to try some this week, as I tripped OFF the sidewalk and need to give my ankle a rest – PERFECT time to try some crafts with my feet up!!!!
Thanks
Quesadillas and guac. I’d be happy with this every day of my life!
I love the dragon ducks. All the ducks! And how fun that you are going to teach the card class. I know the members will love it!
