Sunday Chat – Stamping and Serging

This past week, I managed to eek out a bit of time for some creative fun, and stamped a few more cards for the boutique. I think I’ll stop at 30 to have for sale. The great thing is if they don’t sell, I’ll have them to use myself. I love this sentiment!

Two more with a different sentiment. I put this same saying on the inside of a few other cards.

Are you in the path of the total solar eclipse? See my posts from 2017 when we were able to see one. First, Preparing for the Eclipse will give you some information and suggestions to make the day go well, then An Awesome Day has photos from the 2017 eclipse where the clouds cleared just in time for some fabulous photos.

April is National Serger Month! In celebration, Sulky Threads is having a wonderful giveaway!! Enter to win a serger bundle, including two Serger Sessions on the Sulky education platform, 30 wt. Cotton Blendables thread starter assortment (great for the loopers!) & Universal Poly Deco Thread Starter Package (great for the needles & decorative loopers!), valued at $357.62! Just click on the link and scroll down the page to the black bar, and click on Enter Now. Plus this week, Sulky has 35% off Rayon and Poly Deco King Threads. Using Rayon threads in your serger is a great way to add a finishing touch to rolled edge projects.

I’ve only done a few posts using my serger. One was how to Serge Perfect Napkins, showing how to do a rolled edge with perfect corners. The same technique works for table cloths, too.

I use the serger to help me when I am altering my clothes. I am on the short side, so I have to hem almost every pair of pants I buy. So I use it to cut and finish the edge as the first step. See my post Quick Method Pants Hemming.

Using a serger makes garment construction very fast, like this one for a quick nightshirt to sleep in. Sewing a Rayon Lounge Top Nightshirt.

If you make burrito style pillowcases, a serger makes finishing these a breeze. We are going to make these in our guild Area later in the year. See my post A Pillowcase Project for a step by step tutorial with lots of photos.

Do you have a serger? What projects do you use your serger for the most?

I’m cracking up on the “fat quarter” comment – so cute! I love my serger for finishing edges. I’ll have to try it next time I make pillowcases. We’re in the totality path, but historically the first 10 days of April are cloudy here so we’re not sure about the view. Regardless, we have so many guests visiting we will still enjoy it. Off to finish my eclipse wall hanging – yes, I left it to the last minute!

We’re in the 60-70% range for the eclipse tomorrow. I wish I knew what we did with our eclipse glasses that we bought in 2017 – they worked really well. I think I’ll have to make a box viewer for it. Your serger looks handy – I don’t have any experience with those at all. Have a great Sunday, Carole!

I will be in the path for total solar eclipse in Tiffin, Ohio. The area has been gearing up for months. Our area has been taking lots of advice from your area on what to expect with the additional spectators. All my grandchildren are out of school that day and my children are off work. We all have our glasses ready to go.

I’m in the path of totality and have my glasses ready. I’m just not sure how to know when it’s safe to take them off to see the full eclipse. I’d rather stay at my house to view than go down to the village center where a crowd is expected. I don’t have a serger and doubt I would use one enough to justify the cost and the time needed to learn how to use it.

    1. You should keep your glasses on while you can see any part of the sun. Only at the full coverage of the moon can you remove them briefly to see the corona, then put them right back on again. If you can see the sun through the glasses, keep them on.

I’m also in the path of totality. I’m getting kinda sick of ALL the info/suggestions/etc for the eclipse (the timeframe here is 1:40-1:44 for the totality) We’ve been hearing that we will most likely have some clouds but the weatherman keeps saying ‘high’ clouds which should still allow us to see the eclipse. I ordered my glasses long ago and there are apparently people from ALL OVER here to see it. We had a picture perfect day today (of course) so we’ll see what tomorrow brings! I’ll be watching in my backyard….

We’re all very excited around here as we’re in the 90% path of the eclipse. We located our 2017 glasses so we’re all set to watch. Even Mom’s P/T is cooperating bc it’s at 11:30 so we should be done & home in good time for watching the event. Love the cards about the FQ! Bet it sells well at the boutique!

Where I live in NW Pennsylvania, we are in the path of totality for the eclipse. We had rain this morning and it’s cloudy. We are supposed to clear around noon and have some partial sun this afternoon. We can watch it from our back deck if the sun shines. I scoped it out yesterday when we had brilliant sunshine all day! It’s crazy here. Cars everywhere, small airplanes flying over, booths set up in our little, normally quiet town, selling tee-shirts, glasses, whatever you want of eclipse memorabilia. I choose to stay home and hopefully watch this as I don’t think I‘ll be around in 2044.

Ive Never used a serger, and since I don’t make clothing, and I watched some ladies complain about them and the mess of threads at the senior center, I don’t need or ever want one!

Happy Solar Eclipse Day 2024! 🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑🌒🌓🌔

Love your emails etc. since you like to recommend books, here is one I just finished for our book club: Crow Mary by Kathleen Grissom. Takes place in the 1860 to 1890 era and is about a young woman, her marriage, family and her tribe.
