Setting a festive table early in the month for everyday use brings more cheer to meals in December. I’ve been collecting these dishes for some time now, finding a mug here, and a bowl there. I’ve added three serving pieces found online, but there is no room for them on the pub table we use for everyday meals. There is barely enough for the large place settings, but it is so much fun to use the dishes as much as possible this month.

The set is called Vintage Christmas designed by Susan Winget. I just love her designs. Originally, I found the four salad plates. Shorthly after, I found a mug in a thrift shop, then a second mug in another thrift shop, and the rest is history.

There are four motifs – a gift package, a sleigh, a stocking and a tree. There should be one of each on all the pieces, but only the plates and bowls have all four. I’ve found the rest one at a time, so I took what I could find.

The place settings have red chargers topped with white dinner plates and the Vintage Christmas salad plates. A bowl is placed on the left for soup (or dessert!) and a mug on the right. Water glasses, everyday flatware, and individual salt and pepper shakers complete the settings.

On the left, red napkins are held with Christmas drum napkin rings adorned with ribbons and berries. The butter dishes have Christmas tree butter spreaders placed above them.

The bowls are just the right size for a lunch serving of soup, or a dessert of warm berry or apple cobbler after a festive meal.

Each place setting has four pieces of the dishware.

In the middle of the table, a simple centerpiece has only two elements, both handmade. The silk arrangement is one I made for the fair this year to enter in Holiday Floral Arrangements. Last year I used a purchased poinsettia. The base is a fabric wreath made by my friend, Gail, and given to me last Christmas. It was left over from our Christmas Tea, where Gail and her crew made about 20 of them for the tables and buffet. She let me have this one, and I was thrilled.

She is a master of this pattern. If you want to make one, they are pretty simple, just do an internet search for Fold ‘N Stitch Wreath – you’ll find youtube videos and online picture tutorials all over the internet. Gail put tiny red beads on the points where they are stitched together to create the dimension for the wreath.

We’ll enjoy this table most of the month, until Christmas eve. Then, I’ll get out the good china for the holiday meals.

Another thing I’ve begun to do is display the beautiful serving pieces on tables and in decorating. The large platter goes on a stand on the top of the cookbook shelf where we will see it everyday.

I try to make my tablescapes just a bit different each year using what I already have. To see my Black and Red tablescape using these same dishes, click on Vintage Christmas Tablescape. This time I used the large platter as the base for the centerpiece.

Our good china is a set of Lenox Holiday Tartan, and the formal table is set on the larger dining room table. See a similar tablescape on my post Christmas Dinner Tablescape.

Very festive! Susan Winget’s designs are always a treat. My Mom always had a special plate on display on her buffet. The good China only made an appearance on holidays, but there was always a decorative plate in a place of honor.
