Happy Thanksgiving!

It is Thanksgiving day! With the parades in the morning, football all afternoon, good food to celebrate, time with My Sweet Babboo, and all the anticipation for the holidays and gatherings to come, it is my favorite day of the year.

I love the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. It is a tradition to watch it while I am still in my jammies, with a cup of hot coffee and a serving of my breakfast casserole on a turkey plate. When Tom Turkey comes down the lane, the holidays have begun. I love the floats, and the balloons, watching the marching bands and the Rockettes dance number. A couple of years ago I started a Pinterest board to save pictures of the legendary parade and I have added to it from time to time – Thanksgiving Parade!!   There are images pinned from before WWII, modern images, and even some from Miracle on 34th Street.

Today, I’ll be slow roasting my turkey at 250º for 20 minutes per pound. The 10-pound turkey should take about 3-1/3 hours. It will be served on my heirloom turkey platter, like I do every year. Use an instant read thermometer to test it at the prescribed time, and bake until the breast meat is 165º near the bone. Be sure to let the turkey rest for at least 30-45 minutes, while the side dishes cook. Covered with foil it should stay hot for an hour or more. I watched a Gordon Ramsay video recently that said you should rest the turkey for the same amount of time as it cooks. But, I couldn’t possibly wait three hours to eat it!! So, an hour at most will do. Our dressing this year is sourdough and whole wheat bread with wild rice, leeks and portobello mushrooms.

Charred Brussels Sprouts will be our vegetable dish, made in a cast iron skillet.

When you set your holiday table this year, fan fold your napkins like turkey tails. It doesn’t take long to do and your guests will be delighted.

As we enjoy this long holiday weekend, I will remember all the things I am grateful for – our health and family, my true friends, faithful readers like you, our home in the mountains, food on the table, and time to enjoy it all in safety and security in a free country.  Plus jellied cranberry sauce in a can. It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without it, served in my grandmothers glass dish with the lines of the can on the sides.

My birthday is coming up as well, so even more reason to celebrate. This is my favorite cake, rich French vanilla with dark chocolate frosting. My Sweet Babboo got this one for me last year.

    Happy Thanksgiving dear dear Friend.
Your day sounds delicious and delightful
I hope you can enjoy some time outside and enjoy the beautiful fresh air that makes you sneeze a bit from the leaves, especially now after that soaking rain!

Happy Thanksgiving, Carole! Enjoy your favorite day! Your meal sounds delicious. I didn’t know about resting the turkey for such a long time – will have to plan for that in my cooking.

Happy Thanksgiving! We are enjoying the Macy’s parade too. Wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without it. Makes me want to see more shows. And the bands are just wonderful. We are looking forward to a local production of White Christmas next month.

  4. Happy Thanksgiving! The Macy’s parade is a great tradition…we will walk while the turkey cooks…all else is pretty much ready except for warming up and setting the table. Your table is gorgeous….again wishing you a happy day today and on your birthday!

  5. Happy Thanksgiving! Have you posted the recipe for the French Vanilla cake. It sounds so yummy. I love dark chocolate. The frosting sounds like something I’d like!

Happy Thanksgiving to you. Going to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was always on my bucket list, but I didn’t want to brave the cold and the crowds. One year my son in law was working for a company on the parade route. We sat in a conference room at balloon eye level and watched the parade. Afterwards we had a Thanksgiving picnic before taking the train home to Connecticut. It was one of the best Thanksgivings I’ve ever had.

  10. I hope your Thanksgiving day was every bit as wonderful as those past and with no unfortunate holiday crazies! I love your passion for the parade. They do a wonderful job and I love watching too. Your turkey looks terrific! Now, onward! Have a wonderful holiday weekend.
