Today, we will do some wool embroidery. The Sulky Fall Botanicals embroidery set is perfect for small projects. Each design is shown in pretty fall colors, but you can change those up as you please. We’ll use the machine embroidery today, but this set also comes in a hand embroidery pack with pattern transfers if you like hand work.

Using your embroidery machine on wool is easy. I set up the embroidery hoop with a light oatmeal color wool and a single sheet of tear away stabilizer. I also moved the placement to the bottom of the hoop area which gives me a larger section at the top to cut the backing. You may notice my little Rocky sticker on my machine, he is amazed at my work, LOL!!

The Sulky threads have such depth of color that the same thread looks darker on one side of the leaf due to the angle of the light.

This pattern design calls for a lighter color for the veins. I think I’ll do another in the rust color with a dark brown vein.

Next, center your design in a 4-1/2-inch square and trim.

Trim a second piece of wool the same size.

Place right sides together, and sew around the edge with a quarter inch seam, leaving an opening for turning.

Clip the corners.

Turn right side out.

Stuff with fiber fill.

Slip-stitch the opening closed by hand.

Wasn’t that easy? So fun and fast. Let’s make another one with a different color wool. I selected a pumpkin orange color. Using the same Fall Botanicals embroidery set stitched out a floral spray.

On the back side, I pulled away as much of the tear-away stabilizer as was easy to do. I didn’t try to get every last bit.

Cut it to 4-1/2-inches square with the motif centered. Cut a backing piece too. Sew, turn and stuff, then finish by hand just like before.

I found some gold wool for a chrysanthemum and green wool for a fall leaf. There are two more oatmeal color ones in the bowl as well. A bowl full of little wool pillows!

Alternatively, you could embroider the wool and make little penny rugs with them, or a wall hanging with several motifs.

Love your little pillows.
I like the embroidery hoop art for a fall project!!
Hello, Carole, from my traveling home. We’ve been in our RV for a couple months seeing the western national parks. I am so happy to have a good Internet connection in time for Fall Fortnight. Your wool projects are great! Wonderful eye candy and inspiration while I am away from my machine! I missed my sewing group’s September\ October monster applique project. Looking at Sulky, I’m thinking that their Spooky Banner project might work for next year’s quilt.

I couldn’t believe all the interesting projects on the Sulky website. I do love the majestic colors in their embroidery thread. I recently got an embroidery module with my new machine which will be wonderful to use for any of your projects especially the fall leaves.
I poked around the sulky site a bit and found that they have a bigger variety of products than I expected. I was particularly surprised to find cute holiday mugs! There were lots of cute project ideas as well. So I learned that sulky is not just embroidery thread.
This is a terrific idea! I have that set of Sulky, it’s so pretty for embroidering leaves.
I like the reverse applique technique. It is something I haven’t tried before, and I’m always up for learning new things. I think your wool projects are lovely. I have a few bowl fillers for Christmas and I have had many compliments on them.
This project would be a good way to use leftover wool!
I don’t usually sew with sulky so this is a wonderful project for me to use my “treasured” Sulky thread! All the sisters have a holiday and I host the family at Thanksgiving. Always looking for something “new” Thanks for this year’s napkin/runner!
I didn’t know your embroidery machine would work on wool! Those are sweet designs and I love the little pillows you made out of them. I don’t have an embroidery machine, so won’t enter the prize drawing, but it’s still fun to see what you did!
The little cushions are fabulous. They would make such a festive decor in a basket on a table. I love the Halloween banner characters.
I looked at all the projects! The upcoming one for Nov is a holiday rope tray – I would love to learn to make a rope bowl / tray! On my list to learn! Love their threads of course! Thank you and Sulky!!
I like the Boho Floral hand embroidery pattern.
What a great assortment of projects on the Sulky sight. I love Fall, so any of the leaf, Halloween, projects would be wonderful. I also like the Cork Bottom Tote.
I like the little fall pillows and will hand embroider a few for needle minders. My first visit to the Sulky website and I would like to do the embroidery hoop art “thankful”. Thank you to you and the sponsors. Happy Thanksgiving from this Canadian.

I think these are so cute! Quick and easy. I like the fall themed embroidery hoop art. It would be a fast finish. I think I’d use it as a pillow though.
What cute bowl fillers, Carole!!!🎃
I like the embroidery hoop project with the fall leaves and the word thankful on it. I’m not really a great embroiderer, but I’d give it a try. I don’t have an embroidery machine, I thought about purchasing one, but I’m not sure if I would use it much. Silky threads are awesome though and thanks to them for this awesome giveaway! Thank you Carole!
I love the Holiday Cheer Advent Calendar.
What a great idea! Thanks.
I think the Sweater Weather Mega Mystery Box would be a fun thing to be able to have arrive and open up. Looks like it contains enough projects and supplies for hours of creativity.
I love your embroidered on wool bowl filler pillows. I don’t own an embroidery machine, but I could do the THANKFUL with Leaves in the hoop hand embroidery. Simple but pretty.
I love the Teacher Journal Cover with the embroidery design “Hug a Teacher’. Very cute and look forward to making one or more of the journal covers.
Carole, I’m sorry if I missed this somewhere along the line but where do you get the wool that you are using in this project?
Hi Donna,
I do not have a wool sponsor this year, so I am using my stash. But this link to Amazon has some great colors at a good price as it is a blend – Merino Wool/Rayon Felt. Or this one is 100% Wool – Weir Wool Felt Collection.
I absolutely love the Halloween banner. The triangle ghosts and pumpkins are so cute
Those are super cute!
Sorry I missed this until Wednesday. I like the 12 Projects page and the napkins to embroider. The project you made turned out very nicely. Those would make nice little pin cushions too.
