It wouldn’t be fall without something Pumpkin Spice, right? So, grab your latte, and fire up your embroidery machine for a Pumpkin Spice wall hanging.
If you’d like this particular saying for your embroidery machine, it is available on Designs by Juju (not affiliated) in a set called Harvest Sayings Set 1. Stitch it out, and trim to 6-1/2-inches square. Match your thread colors to your fabric choices. You could also use a hand embroidered motif. Once again, if you do not have an embroidery machine, fussy cut a motif for the center section.
Next, we’ll make some flying geese using the no-waste method. You’ll need one large print square 7-3/4-inches square and four 4-3/8-inch light background squares. Mark the back of the small background squares with two lines, 1/4-inch away from a diagonal center line.
Place the squares on the diagonal on the print square, making sure the lines connect.
Sew on the lines.
Cut apart down the center between the sewn lines, and press the resulting triangles creating two heart shaped units. Place a background square on the remaining corner. Using the two line method, you can see that the lines intersect the previously sewn unit right at the corner created. This ensures that the stitching will be accurate. Sew on the lines on both units.
Cut apart and press. You now have four flying geese. Trim each one to 3-1/2-inches by 6-1/2-inches. I find using a Deb Tucker Wing Clipper tool to be the easiest way to get an accurate cut. Place the tool on the goose making sure the point is on the X and the size is correct. Trim the top and right side of the unit.
Flip it around, putting the goose point at the correct intersection, and making sure the total size is correct. Trim the top and right sides.
With your perfect flying geese, the center section embroidery, and four print 3-1/2-inch squares, assemble the center section.
As you are sewing, make sure that your seam goes through the exact point of the X of the previous seams to get perfect points.
Sew in rows. Press the seams opposite so the rows will nest. To reduce bulk on these seams, I press the top and bottom row to the outside, and the center row towards the center.
Center section complete, next add a border of background.
Lay out your scrappy squares for the outer border, play with the arrangement until you are pleased with the placement.
Sew the side sets of seven, and the top / bottom sets of nine.
Sew the side borders to the center section, then add the top and bottom borders.
Quilt as desired. I used a pumpkin pantograph on mine in white thread. Small projects like this are easy to quilt on your domestic machine. Simple lines, stitch in the ditch, or echo quilting all would work well. I applied the binding by machine in a plaid that matches some of the border patches.

Your detailed directions and photos have convinced me to try that method of making the dreaded Flying Geese block. The fabrics used in the project shout “FALL”! My choice from the new fabric line is Scenic Allover with the deer and wildlife. My youngest brother retires next March and it’s my routine to celebrate with a quilt. He might also have liked the eagle panel.

I love scattering little minis around the house for the holidays. This is a sweet version for fall. The fabrics in A Walk in the Forest would be my choice.
I had a hard time choosing just one fabric in the new collections. I think my favorite has to be The Autumn Breeze fabric collection by designer Nancy Halvorsen. The Dancing Leaves is just so pretty and delicate, and the coordinating fabrics are great.
I love this fun little project, and it just proves again how nicely you are combining your quilting projects with machine embroidery. Great project. By the way, that collection from Benartex with the teal you used is amazing. 🙂

Oh wow! I fell in love with the Christmas at Home collection…so beautiful and rich looking with the pines, flowers, poinsettias and holly berries. I have almost 2 months to make myself a Christmas quilt…I’ve made one for family members for decades and now it’s my turn…lol….(that sounded greedy)…I’ve long loved Benartex fabrics. I have to travel to a neighboring state for my nearest local quilt shop…she’s going out of business so I’m not sure if the owner will carry these new lines. Sigh! Thanks for a chance to win!
I love all the collections but the one that I am most partial to is the angel collection. I have always loved anything with angels but more so when my son passed away in 1994 at 5 years old. When I see this collection it brings a smile and a certain calm to me knowing that we have a special angel.

I LOVE the Cupid’s Arrow collection! I love everything Valentines Day (helps that I have a husband who’s a romantic). I love the rich colors of the collection. I also like the pumpkin background fabric that you used in your wallhanging. The combination of teal with the orange and white pumpkins is lovely!
