Fall Fortnight – Micro-Mitts

Today’s free pattern is a small project with big appeal. This little one-handed hot pad is specifically designed to take hot things out of a microwave, with pockets on the top for your fingers and thumb to grip the edge of a hot plate or bowl, or a handle. Of course, they also work for taking pans out of the oven. Chickens seem to be a popular theme for kitchens, and my own kitchen is chicken themed too. So, lets make some Micro-Mitts today.

Begin by layering a cute print, batting and a neutral backing together and quilt the sandwich. You can use insulating batting if you choose, and this will make them a bit more heat protective. I have also made these with two batting layers, one thin cotton and one insulating. Then, using the pattern linked below mark the size of the oval base. I am making two micro-mitts with this piece. I made acrylic templates from the pattern so I could make a bunch of these.

Cut them out.

Using the pocket pattern, cut two pockets on the fold of the fabric. If you have a fun motif like this one, a clear acrylic template helps center the design.

You should now have three pieces, the quilted base, and two pockets cut on the fold. If you don’t have enough width for your chosen motif, you can piece them with borders on the edges. Just do that first and be sure to cut the pocket pieces on the fold.

Place the pockets on the backing side, so your cute print is on the bottom. This way you don’t cover up the fun print. For my black background chicken print, I used a cute allover with black chickens on a brown background. Pin in place, then stitch around the edge.

Bind by machine using a tuck and turn edge joining. Press the edge of the binding to the wrong side to create a finished edge. Pin the binding to the mitt. When you get to the starting point, tuck the raw edge inside the start of the binding and pin. Stitch around the edge.

Remove the pins, and fold the binding to the top side. Topstitch close to the folded edge.

    Brilliant! My sister would like to have a few chickens but the HOA doesn’t allow it. So the next best thing is a quilted something with chicken fabric/design. This fits the bill.

    I went to Fat Quarters website but could not find where to answer the question. I would love to have ordered the Jolly Box but that is sold out.     And I could definitely use leftovers for these adorable hot mits! I always thought you had to use the hot pad batting for these, just using regular batting makes things easier.

    My daughter just asked me last weekend if I would make her a set of “finger hotpads” as a Christmas gift! She has small hands and the glove-style hotpads don’t fit well. Now I have a great tutorial to get this done! Thank you.

  40. I’m attached to the old-style loop potholders I made as a child, but these look like they could be very useful when using plates and bowls instead of pots and pans. Thank you for the tutorial.

    I haven’t bought fabric for ages so it was fun to look through some of the offerings at Fat Quarter Shop. I fell in love with the brown flower print, Bridgeport Brown Bridgeport Blooms Yardage by Jo Morton and French Market Pink Floral Yardage by Jera Brandvig for Maywood Studio.   49. I’m so happy that you are doing some small projects. I’m always looking for something quick to make for some gifts. Each year I make a number of items for my daughter’s co-workers (and each year the list grows!).
