Fall Fortnight – Micro-Mitts

Today’s free pattern is a small project with big appeal. This little one-handed hot pad is specifically designed to take hot things out of a microwave, with pockets on the top for your fingers and thumb to grip the edge of a hot plate or bowl, or a handle. Of course, they also work for taking pans out of the oven. Chickens seem to be a popular theme for kitchens, and my own kitchen is chicken themed too. So, lets make some Micro-Mitts today.

Begin by layering a cute print, batting and a neutral backing together and quilt the sandwich. You can use insulating batting if you choose, and this will make them a bit more heat protective. I have also made these with two batting layers, one thin cotton and one insulating. Then, using the pattern linked below mark the size of the oval base. I am making two micro-mitts with this piece. I made acrylic templates from the pattern so I could make a bunch of these.

Cut them out.

Using the pocket pattern, cut two pockets on the fold of the fabric. If you have a fun motif like this one, a clear acrylic template helps center the design.

You should now have three pieces, the quilted base, and two pockets cut on the fold. If you don’t have enough width for your chosen motif, you can piece them with borders on the edges. Just do that first and be sure to cut the pocket pieces on the fold.

Place the pockets on the backing side, so your cute print is on the bottom. This way you don’t cover up the fun print. For my black background chicken print, I used a cute allover with black chickens on a brown background. Pin in place, then stitch around the edge.

Bind by machine using a tuck and turn edge joining. Press the edge of the binding to the wrong side to create a finished edge. Pin the binding to the mitt. When you get to the starting point, tuck the raw edge inside the start of the binding and pin. Stitch around the edge.

Remove the pins, and fold the binding to the top side. Topstitch close to the folded edge.

Easy! And a very fast finish. Download the free pattern – Micro Mitts Pattern.

Use these mitts to take a loaf pan out of the oven with some of my Pumpkin Orange Bread!

These are great as a set given with some hot pads you’ve embroidered. To see a complete tutorial on hot pads, see my post from a previous Autumn Jubilee- Hot Pads.

Love this little mitt idea. Great for gifting, as you said with some potholders and an added loaf of your Pumpkin Orange Bread. Yum! Thanks for this idea.

Brilliant! My sister would like to have a few chickens but the HOA doesn’t allow it. So the next best thing is a quilted something with chicken fabric/design. This fits the bill.

I went to Fat Quarters website but could not find where to answer the question. I would love to have ordered the Jolly Box but that is sold out. I love the selection they have of cross stitch fabrics and their kits are great. Thank you for taking care of this for me and sorry I could not find where to go to answer their question. Have a great fall!!

  13. From the Fat Quarter Shop – Spiced Favorites Sea Mist Fancy Foulard 108″ Wide Yardage SKU# 1832-11

It is just a beautiful piece of fabric, and are just the right colors for my daughter’s dining room. I’m coming up with a plan for new placemats and calculating how much of this yardage I would need. 🙂

I love the micro-mitts. What a cute idea. I seem to make this type of thing for others, and my own pot holders are looking bedraggled. Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂

  14. Fat Quarter Shop is my favorite online quilt shop. I buy from them quite often. I would love to have these FQ Bundles (for starters): Colors Bee Bundle, Nantucket Summer, Calico. I love what they have to offer. Great Customer Service also! Loved your pattern! I have a giftee in mind for that!! Thank you.

I love the oven mitts! I’ll be making a set of those with the turkey fabric I have to take as a gift at Thanksgiving

Carole. These are great potholders. I have made since similar ones in the past. I didn’t cut the pockets on the fold, bound that she also. This is much better

fat Quarters Shop has such great fabrics. The true colors white fairy dust would be a wonderful dashing fit a project I’m planning

The mitts look so handy! What a great little gift for friends.

At FQS the thing that caught my eye today is Into the Woodlands Fat Quarter Bundle by Deane Beesley for Wilmington Prints. The little animals are so cute!

What a fun gift – love the chicken material too! On my list for FQS is the Creative Grids Hexie ruler – I want to make some Hexie table toppers in your last post! Fun Fun!

I’m thinking about doing a past Autumn quilt design by you, so the Autumn Sunsets or Autumn Falls Batiks Fat Quarter set by Hoffman Fabrics would be my picks! 🤩 I’m so into batiks right now.

And I could definitely use leftovers for these adorable hot mits! I always thought you had to use the hot pad batting for these, just using regular batting makes things easier.

I love the mitts, I think I will make a set for my son, the cook in the family!

At FQS, something that I have wanted for a long time is a TrueSharp 2 Power Rotary Blade Sharpener. That would be so handy and save so much money!

My daughter just asked me last weekend if I would make her a set of “finger hotpads” as a Christmas gift! She has small hands and the glove-style hotpads don’t fit well. Now I have a great tutorial to get this done! Thank you.
On the FQS website, I’d love to have 22″ x 59″ Felted Wool Pressing Mat
The Gypsy Quilter #TGQWM2259. I have 2 smaller wool pressing mats and this longer one would be ideal on my big table! duchick at gmail dot com

Pretty much loved every SKU of Potted by Kiley’s Quilt Room (Moda). So beautiful — the designs and the colors totally speak to me.

  27. I’m attached to the old-style loop potholders I made as a child, but these look like they could be very useful when using plates and bowls instead of pots and pans. Thank you for the tutorial.

I haven’t bought fabric for ages so it was fun to look through some of the offerings at Fat Quarter Shop. I fell in love with the brown flower print, Bridgeport Brown Bridgeport Blooms Yardage by Jo Morton and French Market Pink Floral Yardage by Jera Brandvig for Maywood Studio. Now I hope I win the gift certificate!

Thank your for creating and organizing Fall Fortnight!

  32. I’m so happy that you are doing some small projects. I’m always looking for something quick to make for some gifts. Each year I make a number of items for my daughter’s co-workers (and each year the list grows!).

I love shopping at FQS. Since I’m trying to “shop my stash” this year I find I’m needing thread, batting & backing the most.

Thank you to Fat Quarter Shop for being a sponsor.

your patterns are always so easy to follow and the pictures you provide are tremendously helpful.
Fat Quarter Shop has a great selection of quilt labels and tags. I have plenty of fabric and other notions but I really need some creative labels and tags for my finished quilts and projects. I would love to be able to pick out a variety of them from the Fat Quarter Shop.

  34. Commenting for Rose who contacted me via email –
    Hi Carole,
