More Quilt Deliveries for Hurricane Helene Recovery

Two more shipments arrived this week, and I immediately went to work making appointments for delivery. Two boxes arrived from Pennsylvania, and I was scared for a moment that they might have been damaged. The box was coming apart at the corner, and looked like it had been through a tornado. But thankfully, all were still intact and escaped any harm. The Amazing Grace Quilters sent 14 beautiful quilts in several sizes.

My focus now is to get quilts to the wonderful first responders in our area who took care of the public and worked hard in the aftermath while dealing with damage to their own homes. I was able to get in touch with the Mountain Home Fire Department a few days later. They have two stations with beds. I took enough for every bed to have one.

Captain Russell Branton and Firefighter Richard Parker met me to carry the quilts into their station.

As we carried the quilts upstairs to their living quarters, I mentioned that each firefighter could choose which one they wanted. Captain Branton wasted no time in picking the beautiful patriotic themed quilt for his bed.

The other firefighters present that day nabbed quilts for their beds, then put the rest on the remaining beds. Here Firefighter Richard Parker on the left, stands with Firefighter Jacob Allen next to Jacob’s bed with his choice. Chief Mark Wilson sits on another firefighter’s bed covered with a quilt. All seemed to be very happy to be remembered for their hard work.

The next day, I delivered the rest of what I had remaining. Two quilts went to the last two families in Gerton who were instrumental in their community’s recovery. The smaller quilts with children’s themes, along with two rag quilts which were perfect for little boys went to Project Linus. The drop off box is at the church where our guild meets.

Then, the last six quilts were taken to Safelight for shelter residents. Christine Gilmore was delighted, and wanted to show her love for the quilters.

So, here is where we stand. I can use four more oversize twin quilts for the second station of Hendersonville firefighters. Then, I’d like to serve the Edneyville Fire station as well. When those needs have been met, we will be done. So maybe a dozen more twin quilts will do it. Do let me know if you are planning to send one. And if you are local and can help with making one, let me know that as well.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this project!!

#1 You can never go wrong with a red, white, & blue quilt, especially when you’re serving first responders! They are the most public service oriented & patriotic people I know. That said, I appreciate a man who unabashedly selects a purple quilt! I can supply another twin sized quilt for you.

    1. Oh, the chief didn’t select that one for himself, it was one chosen for a firefighters bed who wasn’t on duty right then.
Thanks so much for offering to send a twin quilt!! Anytime before the end of summer is great.

Just made me cry from the generosity of you and your band of quilters! We had the first responders here recently when a friend fell in my bathroom from a stroke, and the responders were here before I finished the 911 call. Amazing people! You are a first responder as well. Thanks so much.
