QOV Progress, and Hurricane Quilts

Last week I needed to get busy on two Quilts of Valor. This one was loaded onto the longarm, but I didn’t get it done until midweek. I really like the way the piecer, Judy, did the borders around the panel, with pinwheel blocks and small eagles creating a frame.

I quilted it with my favorite pantograph for QOVs, a star and swirl design called Blue Star from Urban Elementz.

I chose a light blue Glide thread for the top, and a matching color Bottom Line in the bobbin. I thought the pale blue would blend well on the top, and disappear on the light blue backing. Unfortunately, I forgot to get a picture of the finish. I delivered it back to Judy to do the binding last week.

So next, I needed to make progress on another Quilt of Valor. I had made the flying geese for the star points at home in October.

At retreat in October, I made the lattice blocks, chain piecing as much as I could.

It didn’t take but half a day to do the fifteen nine-patch blocks I needed.

I assembled the star blocks with the nine-patch lattice blocks, and added two borders. One in the same white star tone on tone, then a light blue outer border.

I loaded it on the longarm on Thursday, and began working on the quilting.

I auditioned several thread colors, and decided on a pale gold Magnifico thread for the top, with matching Bottom Line in the bobbin. The backing is a beige with tiny flags. This color blends well in both the prints and the lighter background.

I am using the same pantograph on this one. It truly is the best one I have for these quilts. I hope to finish the quilting today.

Then I need to start on the next one, using this panel. I just realized, it is the exact same panel as the quilt above. Since these will be awarded to two gentlemen at the same ceremony, I will try to think of something just a bit different.

Last week I made contact with Debbie R from Charlotte. She had called Beginnings to see if she could drop off some quilts for hurricane victims and they sent her to me. We made arrangements for her to come by, and she brought ten bed size quilts with her! We spread out the gorgeous yellow and black one on the longarm for a picture, along with two bags of quilts she was donating.

They were only in my house for a couple of days. On Friday, a group of us from the quilt guild went to the Tryon Equestrian Center to shop in the Chimney Rock merchant booths. I arranged for Sarah from Bat Cave to meet me there and pick up 19 quilts. Thank you to Karen Sue G, Ruth M, Julie C and Karen W for sending quilts for this delivery and the last one.

I hope I can get significant progress on the second QOV this week. After that, I think I’ll have one more to quilt for Judy. All of these have to be finished for a presentation in February. And I like to do the binding by hand. But I have plenty of time as long as I continue to make some progress each week.

  1. Those are beautiful quilts for presentation to veterans. I love hearing that quilts are coming in and being delivered to W. NC as the weather is changing to winter. I’ve been reading about people donating their RV Trailers and a group setting those up for people who have been surviving almost two months out of doors. Our heart remains with all of you in the mountains of NC.

I love all the quilts of valor that you are doing and have done. They are beautiful. Question though – I looked up Blue Star on Urban Elementz. What does petite for the digitaledge to edge mean. What is petite exactly ?

    Thanks for your help

Thanks Carole. I find it hard sometimes to get the information that I need from Urban Elementz although I love their stuff

Those are some beautiful Quilts of Valor! I especially love the stars and 9 patches design. It looks perfect for just about any bundle of fabric. So glad to know that people are continuing to bring and send quilts for hurricane victims, too.

Absolutely amazing how people are so giving and for you to be the organizer is a perfect fit. I’m cutting a new pattern for “the kids” – got a bundle of 20 Dr. Suess panels and making some neck gators from fleece, getting a step ahead of the Chicago winter. Already “breezy” here. Thanks

What wonderful quilt donations for those affected by the hurricane! Hurray to all involved in giving comfort!

I’m working on an Honor Flight quilt. Honor Flight transports veterans to Washington, DC to see the sites, receive tributes and when the Honor Flight comes into our local airport, each vet gets a quilt. It is a heartwarming experience to give a vet one of these quilts.

Especially like the pantograph on the QOV!

Thanks for keeping us apprised of what’s happening in NC!

I love those QOV quilts! So glad to see so many quilts going to Chimney Rock and Bat Cave. I’ve been following those areas closely because they were so devastated.

HiSo will you no longer take donated quilts for the flood areas? I wasn’t sure after reading today’s newsletter. I liked the QOV quilt with stars and 9-patches. Thanks.Carol

What a wonderful bunch of quilters who are donating to the hurricane victims and yourself making sure they get to the right people. It was a dreadful time for those people and it is heartwarming to see the care being offered to them.

Your QOV are very beautiful and I’m sure very much appreciated by the veterans. Such a caring offering to these servicemen.

    Mary :))
