Sunday Chat – Garden and Trying a New Seasoning Blend

From time to time, Milk Street sends me products to test. This week I received a jar of Flavor Jolt. This is a blend of vegetables and seasonings to give dishes more ‘umami’ flavor. It has dehydrated tomato, carrot, shiitake mushroom, onion, garlic, corn and miso. Add some marvelous flavors in seasonings like turmeric, paprika, black pepper, sea salt and coriander, and it works in lots of ways. The first thing I tried it in was a bowl of chicken noodle soup. I just put a pinch in my bowl, and stirred it in. It disappeared immediately, melting into the broth. I could tell the difference right away, yet it was subtle. The broth gained a fuller body of flavor.

Next, I used it as a rub for pork ribs on the grill. Again, it imparted a wonderful, deep flavor. Delicious! For my gluten free readers, there is no wheat or flour in this product.

I’m going to be adding it to my next pot roast, and slow cooker dishes. Today only, Milk Street is having a National Knife Day Sale where you can save up to 60% on Milk Streets Signature Knives and other select items like Flavor Jolt. Click on Milk Street Knife Sale. Speaking of good eats, George came up to the veranda and looked in the glass door the other day, obviously wanting a meal. So, I got him a peanut butter sandwich and gave it to him. I had to laugh as he made a beeline with it to a nearby tree, then hung upside down to eat it. Crazy thing.

Back to the garden, I’m still harvesting tomatoes for salads to go with grilled meats while the weather is nice. The little cherry ones are so sweet! But I have had the same problem with a few more tomatoes being pecked at. So, I have added two whirligigs to the garden. Hopefully this will freak out the little f*rt that has been ruining my pretties.

I have quite a few of these lovely ones ripening.

Both of the spaghetti squash are coming along nicely. This one will ripen first. The other is still a dark green, but it is larger.

On the feeder, a woodpecker hangs from the bottom to feast on the seed.

Out back, the St John’s Wort is in bloom. It has five petal, yellow, star-like flowers on very tall stalks and long branches.

There are only 8 days left until the turn-in day for the Mountain State Fair. I have most of the projects I had planned done, a couple that will not even get started, and two to finish this week. I have to do the final handwork on the Christmas Jewelry Tree, and I’ll show you that in more detail later. Then I need to finish my paper project, and I’m done. Preseason football is in full swing, with lots of games to watch, and that will give me lots of handwork time. What’s going on at your place this week?

Great save with the label, Phew! Another quilt sorted. Like the sound of the Flavour Jolt. You should have lots of fun with that. Pep up a few dishes. Good idea with the Whirlygigs. Hope they have the desired effect and your tomatoes are saved!!

    Mary :))

The bird quilt is beautiful. Good luck with it at the fair. That was a great idea on the label and the bird adds so much to it. Following your garden spaghetti squash. One of my favorite veggies. I’ll bet fresh from the garden is even much better than from the market. I am in Autumn/Halloween mode and made four table runners this week. Will share them with my daughter.

  3. I know you look forward to the fair every year. I think your quilt turned out so well, and you recovered the label quite nicely. 🙂 That seasoning sounds interesting. I will share the info with my daughters who are always searching for GF products that stand up well. (Some GF items are really not worth the time & money). Yesterday I managed to find Gluten Free Soy Sauce and so today is Chicken on the grill with teriyaki marinade. I have a simple recipe in a book that came with my stainless steel cookware back in the 70’s, and the page is well splattered! It’s that good, simple and lovely .

I have a vegetable sprinkle that adds so much flavour , and if I do roast veges in the air fryer it works a treat. Lovely bird panel, and who would want to eat upside down hanging onto a tree?

Carole, congratulations on finishing the quilt. It’s so pretty. And good luck with the Fair!

The spice mix sounds wonderful, and your garden bounty looks yummy! I like end of summer and the anticipation of fall! But first, another week from Hades coming up. 😩

I liked the way you used the small panel with strips to create a quilt and make good use of that panel. It gives me ideas! Carol

    Carole,

Nothing like a deadline to push projects past the finish line! The label on your bird quilt is a nice finishing touch. Those small embroidery fonts are tricky to work with. Extraordinary how you salvaged the bird part of the label!

Wishing you all the best in your quest to finish your entries for the fair! I hope you do well at the fair!

Your bird quilt is gorgeous, and I like how the label turned out, too, even if it wasn’t what you started out to do! We have had the weekend getaway with family, and drove about halfway home for one more night away. It’s been fun! My garden is about finished, except for one tomato plant that never produced all summer. Now it has four or five little tomatoes on it. I’m not sure what they’ll amount to, but I’m just going to leave them and see.

  8. Love you bird quilt Carole, and that flavor jolt seasoning sounds very interesting! This week is a vacation week for me, so trying to finish as many chores as possible to have a day or two of just fun. I am caught up on canning now, so need to do some organizing in the piano studio and scrub a few floors, then it’s play time. I plan to sandwich one or two quilts, including the fall row quilt from Autumn Jubilee for a wedding gift, and maybe start work on a knitted cardigan or a pair of socks.
