It is always fun to get together with friends to sew. Our local guild Area A (small group) did a sew day last week to get started on twin size quilts for the Safelight Shelter. The coordinator of the charity sew challenged us to make a quilt with a Villa Rosa Pattern card. The card I got was called Kayla. This is the second Villa Rosa pattern I’ve done, and these patterns are fairly easy and quick. I showed the fabric pull in the previous post, but here it is again.

I cut all the squares the pattern needed at home, so I could dive right into sewing. I arranged them into sets according to the directions.

The pattern called for cutting the squares into triangles, then sewing them. But I find my accuracy is better when I mark the sewing lines on the squares and sew first, then cut apart.

Opening the half square triangle units, I arranged them into the chevrons.

Then the rows of chevrons are carefully sewn.

On the ends of the rows, a large focal print square is added.

Then, three blocks of four HSTs are sewn with the focus floral strips. At the end of the day, I had the quilt strips done. Now, remember, I have to spend time chatting, having lunch, and chatting some more, so this good progress. I laid them out just to see what it looked like, then packed them up to take home.

At home, I decided that the arrangement should be adjusted to move the yellow triangles apart, distributing the bright color a bit better. Yes, this looks more balanced.

But, it is too small, and looks like it needs something more. I played around with some additional fabrics, but ultimately decided to repeat the white and green fabric that was already in the quilt. I put a 2-1/2-inch white border on first.

Then added a 4-1/2-inch dark green border.

The Paris quilt came off the frame yesterday, so I loaded Kayla. I’ll quilt this one with a quick pantograph or freehand loops. I hope to get it finished within a week or so. After that, I hope to begin something new. What are you working on?

Those pattern cards are fun! Also fun, I have the opposite results on hsts; my accuracy is better when I sew the triangles rather than diagonal lines on a square. It’s always a good idea to experiment with different methods to learn what works best for you. Speaking of finding the right way, yesterday I figured out how to manage the quilt I’ve unquilted 3 times. It’s going to be a hybrid with machine stitched sashing & borders (completed this stage) joined by big stitch in the blocks. Progress at last so I can move on. I look forward to seeing your finished Paris quilt & Kayla.
What a nice quilt that will be for Safelight. The separating of the yellow is a good idea, as well as making it bigger. Some of them are quite small, and the added borders are perfect.
That is a pretty design – especially with those florals you chose! (You always have the best floral prints!) I’m the same as you with sewing HSTs from squares – if I cut the triangles first, they seem to sew together a little off and trimming is needed anyway. Your white and green borders finished off the center really nicely! I completed my Luminous Layers quilt Wednesday night – just need to write up a finished post now.
Your Kayla quilt turned out lovely. Rearranging the blocks has given it the perfect balance. The colors and that floral print complement nicely. Someone will be so proud and happy to receive this quilt.
WOW – love the fabric and the wonderful floral pattern! I might try this with a sharper color for the kids in the hospital, they love the COLORS!!!!! I can see my boys using this for their trucks too.
Thanks
Distributing the yellow worked really well, and the border colors make a very nice frame. Looks like great quick progress!
That’s going to be a very nice comfort quilt!
I have found those cards are great, too.
This design has worked well with your fabric.
