Stashbusters November

It’s been five weeks since our last check-in, have you been sewing during Autumn Jubilee? There were certainly a lot of projects to use up some stash.

Several projects in Autumn Jubilee reduced my stash. Using the lovely fall fabrics was delightful. First, 1-1/2 yards out for the Autumn Jubilee apron.

Counting out 1/4-yard for the Jar Wraps, including the Sewing Is My Jam one.

The Harvest Festival Quilt counts 2-1/2 yards out for top, backing and binding.

The Turkey Talk placemats count out 2 yards for tops, backing and four bindings.

Two basket liners at 1/2-yard each, count one yard total.

When the Quilts of Valor committee asked for some tissue covers for their booth at the upcoming quilt show, I pulled some patriotic fabrics and had a nice time sewing up a bunch one afternoon. Fabric out 1-1/2-yards for 25 (not all pictured).

Fabric in, couldn’t resist a few things at the freebie table on retreat. Two panels of the harvest print, and two panels of the cardinal print equaled 2 yards in.

Then, these three orphan blocks with strips already cut for binding jumped into my bag. I think they will make a nice runner, quick to sew. I’ll count this as 3/4-yards in.

I did a bit of sewing while at retreat last week, the kind where you sleep at home, but sew all day with friends. I’ll show you those projects soon.

October Fabric IN = 2-3/4
October Fabric OUT = -8-1/4 yards
October Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = -5-1/2 yards
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = -52-1/2 yards out

I honestly don’t even know anymore!

I haven’t purchased fabric for me in 4 months but I’ve purchased fabric for Ryan’s Case for Smiles NE Indiana Chapter. I was given 14 yards to cut into 9″ strips to match with fabric I already have and need to get on that.

I just have to say my perspective has drastically changed now that my focus is charity based instead of want/desire based.

You have an awesome out for the year!

Stash Buster numbers for October 2023

October Fabric IN: 7 yards (I know I am justifying here. The fab “in” is backing for quilts in progress.)
October Fabric OUT: 18 yards (mostly donations and contributions to “give away tables”)
October Net Total Out: 11 yards out the door and into the hands of someone who will put it to use.
    Year to Date: -95.3 Out

I have had a secret goal of sending 100 yards of fabric “out” from my sewing room. It looks like I can do it! The next step is to complelte the three quilts waiting to be finished. Yeah!

In addition to Autumn Jubilee I’ve been doing 2 sewalongs that won’t be finished for a while so it feels like I didn’t get much “done.” But I’m still on par with my net zero game. I’m not counting the fabric people give me for comfort quilts, that’s kept in a separate box.

Did some retreating and traveling with family so that took up most of Oct. Managed only 3 yards shopping at retreat but pieced two more that need finishing.
I did get a quilt finished and on the to go pile. 6 1/2 yds out. For the month 3 1/2 yds out YTD 40 1/2 yds Out.

Well, I came late to the party and didn’t know about this so never kept track I can say that for October, it was all fabric IN, from Layer Cakes to Jelly Rolls to Yardage and one Panel. Best I get busy stitching.

I haven’t accomplished ANY sewing this past month but I hope to in November. Those panels you snapped up are both great! I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with them.

    In: ZERO Yeah!
Out – 7 – easy – did some panels for a lady at church. She gave me a “bucket” of them. Just draggin through this murky weather. Great time to stay inside and quilt! Thanks

    October Fabric IN =+18
    October Fabric OUT =-13.5
October Net Total ( + In, or – Out) =+4.5

I finished my son’s quilt, it turned out well. I made an apron from the jubilee pattern. And, a local fabric store was going out of business, all fabric was 75% off. I thought I used great restraint in bringing home only 18 yards. So stash busting is going the wrong way!

October Fabric IN = 20 yds
    October Fabric OUT = 47 5/8 yds
    October Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = -27 5/8 yds
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = -152 1/4

A number of free yards of wide back followed me home from a retreat, but I finally finished the wedding quilt and a bunch of other small quilts and bag projects. I’m really happy with the total out but my stash is still overflowing with abundance.

This year has been mostly a non-quilting year for me. I enjoy reading your blog and your stash busting updates are interesting and motivating. Please continue the Stash reports for next year. I hope by then, I will be back to quilting and able to report my progress.

  14. Well, October was more productive than I expected, since I was in ID for 11 days for great-grandson’s 3rd birthday! This year’s quilt #55 and #56 were Alycia’s QOV mystery–one done red, white, blue, the other, red, cream, blue! #57 was Grand Star done in patriotic scrappy; #58 Sticks was black and bright batiks (after I found the pattern error and contacted the writer!), #59 is the QOVF Split Star quilt; #60 Was the Slow Summer Stars BOM from Delafield Quilts; #61 was Rows Parade, another BOM from Abi’s quilts; #62 was a UFO of red, black and feathered hexagons; and #63 is Triangle Party quilt along. So nine Quilts of Valor with backs at 10 yards each, means I used another 90 yards, total used 630 yards!!

I really wanted to make the blocks in Autumn Jubilee but with going out of town for over a week for a wedding and getting stuff out of our old house for selling…..I’m just taking it easy. I was taking it so easy, I accidently bought some fat quarters yesterday. First I have bought any all year. oops…….lol

October was the final gathering month for Comfort Quilts, so I was motivated to get 4 of these finished and turned in. Participants were given a yard of one novelty fabric and a fat quarter of a novelty flannel…not so helpful when the goal is to reduce the stash, but a kind thought nonetheless. A UFO for the guild’s challenge program was also completed.
    October In 5.1 yards
    October Out 18.6 yards
    October Net Total -13.5 yards
    YTD Net Total +8.35 yards

Good sewing in November to everyone!

  18. I did shop hop again, so I added and subtracted nearly an even amount. Good news, I am down for the year so far
Fabric in this month: 8 yards
Fabric out this month 6.5 yards
Fabric in this year: 89.25 yards
Fabric out this year: 105.25 yards
    NET Fabric: -16 yards

Carole, Another good month. Fortunately my son asked for curtains for the tv room and I finished a couple of comfort quilts. Yay!! I bought a few fat quarters for a game at a retreat but didn’t win anything so that fabric came in and went out.
Congrats on your successful month and all those beautiful autumn projects. Let’s keep at it!!

  20. I got almost no fresh sewing done in October, just the alterations for MIWW, but those are done now, as are the knitted ornaments, and I am ready to sew! In October I managed 4 complex blocks for Alaska and made one weekend bag for a student gift.

    October Fabric IN = 0

Thanks to some projects from the Autumn Jubilee my stash busting this month was in the right direction.
    October Fabric IN = 0
    October Fabric OUT = 3 1/2 yds
    October Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = – 3 1/2 yds
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = – 6 3/4 yds

  22. Nov wasn’t too bad, finished one UFO and made 4 more new quilts. No new fabric in. Quilt #64 is Indiana Star with an Air Force pillow panel. #65 is Autumn Tints in golf fabric. #66 is Nuno, but changed out the center for an Army pillow panel. #67 was a UFO Interlocking Blocks in rust, brown, black. and #68 was Sunny Days BOM done of course in patriotic. Some of those center motifs were 1.5″HST and hourglasses! All quilts for Quilts of Valor. We actually ran out of quilts over Veterans Day and have another 70 new requests to add to the pending ones! That makes over 500 awarded so far thsi year, and we still have many scheduled in the coming weeks.
So 5 quilts and backs done means another 50 yards of fabric out! Grand total out this year 680 yards!! I have 7 more I am currently working on, and several on the back burner.
