Autumn Jubilee Wool Stitch Along

Autumn Jubilee gets underway today with the first project and the first giveaway! I know that handwork is not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you try wool applique, you might change your mind. So many cute designs, and it goes so quickly, a project doesn’t take a long time.

We’ve done a lot of pumpkins and leaves over the years of Autumn Jubilee, and those projects are still available on the blog. Just click on Wool Work Projects on the right sidebar, and the blog will find them for you. This year, with our Mason jar theme, we’ll make a cute penny rug sized project just right to display the jar projects that will come later. Download the free pattern pdf – Apple Penny Rug Pattern. Then gather your wools in a cream color for the base, a deep red for the apples and green for leaves.

Cut out the pieces as the pattern shows. One thing, cut the leaf shapes smaller than the pattern. When I got the leaves and apples together, the larger size of the leaves made the motif look more like bunny ears than leaves. So, for the actual stitching, I cut them in half.

Arrange one apple in each scallop on the base, and add two leaves to each one.

Pin the apples in place, and stitch with deep red wool thread, or use a matching DMC floss.

Then continue with the leaves, putting two leaves on each apple. Stitch all the leaves with dark green wool thread, or matching DMC floos.

Don’t worry that they aren’t all the same, or spaced exactly evenly apart. The base is not exactly equal all around, which is part of the charm of hand applique.

Next, add some buttons between the apples. I placed mine at about the level of the leaves. You can do this, or place them closer to the points between the apples. Whatever looks best to you.

So, there is the first half of the project. You’ll have three weeks to complete this stage of the project, then we’ll get to the embellishments. You’ll want to dig out some floss and beads for the embellishment for next time.

Today’s giveaway Sponsor, One Of The Flock, is giving away a $50 gift certificate for their lovely wool felt collections or kits! Lovely soft wool felt, fabric and roving in beautiful colors are the hallmarks of this shop. I bought their Fall Harvest collection last year, and it is just luscious!

I love needle felting and it would be hard to choose from all her cute kits, but I do love the squirrel. I’ll bookmark her site for sure!

  10. Betsy Pompi

I love all the collections. The colors are simply luscious. The kit that spoke to me was the “Devoted to you” I’d male and female cardinals. I lost me husband over 2 years ago and had a cardinal visitation a year later. The kit really spoke to my heart.

  11. Kathy Cornell Baumbusch

What gorgeous patterns and wool from One of the Flock! I’d love to have any if them. I’m just starting wool appliqué and have a lot of practicing to do on my embroidery. I love all the darling wool felted animals also – I have a kit for a cat but I need a class. Thanks for drawing this store to my attention!

  12. Mary Anne Wilber

The apple pattern is darling! Need to get some pretty red, but the 18×12 Fall Harvest bundle is calling my name. Thanks for telling us about One of the Flock website! Mary Anne

  13. It’s hard to choose one!! I love the Fall Harvest, Thanksgiving Wreath, Pastels, and the Spooky Halloween (because it has purple in it! LOL). They have some fantastic kits also! Thanks for the heads up on this shop!

  15. Oh how fun! I would love to get the mini mitten kit and make the felted ornaments, but what a hard choice with such a gorgeous selection of projects! Second choice would be the cheerful chickadees.

  16. Sandra

There is so much to o-o-h and a-a-h over at the One of the Flock web site. The Snow Girls Candle Mat Kit is just too sweet. The needle felted animals are stunning. I’m loving the Apple candle mat You have designed for us. Thanks for all your hard work. It is much appreciated.

  17. Debbie Miller

The apple mug rug is really cute-thanks for the project! My favorite on the One of the Flock website is The Pastel Felt Collection. Not necessarily fall but such beautiful vibrant colors!

  18. Sarah Aldrich

Thank for for introducing us to one of the flock. I love her palettes. I would get either spring flowers or living coral. However, it would really depend on the project.

  19. Kathryn Laposata

Since I’m new to this, I think Penny Posies looks easy enough for even me to make. It’s a lovely store.

  20. Diann@ Little Penguin Quilts

I love the Autumn Twilight mini mat on the website! Pretty colors! Your apple penny rug will be fun to work on. I’ll have to go hunt around in my wool stash!

  21. This is going to be so cute. What size buttons did you use? I’ve always wanted to try making a wool project. This might be the year. I loved their Corcle of Friends mat.

  22. Colleen Konetzni

Hi Carole, One of the Flock’s choices of projects are just delightful! So hard to choose a favorite! Also nice selection of sari silks!

  23. I would love to stitch One of the Flock’s Bee Kind Candle Mat. I know it isn’t this season but I love that bee skep.
I wish I had the wool colors for your apple penny but since I don’t, I plan to stitch another pumpkin kit I already have on hand. I’ll save your pattern for another time.

  24. Forrest Sheppard

I forgot how much I enjoy handwork – kind of a winter curled up on the couch activity. This looks like a fun project!

  25. justitchin

I was like a kid in a candy shop. I looked through all 19 pages. If I really had to choose one item, I don’t know which one it would be. The candle mats are all so cute and the Frosty Friends Snowmen wall hanging really caught my eye. It is giving me ideas for Christmas next year.

  26. Melanie Bowman

Oh my gosh. I love so many items! I’ve narrowed it down to The Happy Haunting Kit for Halloween because it has that cute ghost and a Witch’s hat. For Christmas the White Christmas Candle Mat Kit is beautiful. I’ve never done felting before but Penny the Pig might get me started!

  27. Christine Slaughter

Oh there are so many amazing choices! I made sure to follow her shop so I can remember to go order some things later. I think the Thanksgiving Wreath bundle is calling my name the most!

  28. I love One of the Flock’s merchandise. I have purchased several items from them in the past. Cute designs, nice quality materials. I have had my eye on the Mistletoe Memories candle mat for a long time.

  29. Hooray for Autumn Jubilee and wool work!! The patterns and kits are so delightful on the One of the Flock site. Bittersweet, Autumn Vines, and Falling in Love caught my eye. And they have many patterns and items on sale, too! This is a great kickoff for AJ—I’ll be running upstairs to the felt stash to get started!! WooHoo! Here we go…..

  30. Dora Morris

How do I choose just one??? LOL I have quite a few that I would like to do and that is just from the fall and winter kits. If I have to choose one for the fall, I think that I would choose The Pumpkin King.

  31. poodlegirls

Would love the Little Pilgrims Candle Mat. Love their items, now another shop to follow!!! Your pattern is really cute!

  32. Barb K

The Bittersweet Fall wallhanging is lovely–I made a decorative rug with recycled wool in the past- fun to work with wool.

  33. rita75213

The colors of this felt are amazing.
Ive always wanted to make a penny rug…and now Im going to give it a try.

  34. Susan Irish

I instantly fell in love with the Bittersweet Fall Pumpkin wall hanging. We love autumn here in this household. What a beautiful project the Bittersweet Fall Pumpkin would be.

  35. I am still in love with Diego the Donkey, but I’m not good enough with three dimensional anything, so my favorites are the Christmas ornaments, the Victorian, Mini Mittens and Stockings collection, and I love that you can make your own “pack” from all their colors, and in so many sizes. This is a really neat shop!

  36. mellon69

Pretty work on wool felt. Also, I enjoyed browsing One of the Flock’s site. I would choose a wall hanging called Bittersweet Fall. Thanks for the pattern to try out wool felt applique.

  37. Julie

I was busy all morning fall cleaning and putting out my Autumn & Halloween decorations. It was fun to take a break and visit One of the Flock. That shop has the cutest kits & nicest felt. I was so happy to find them at my first Jubilee. I ordered an autumn kit & a Halloween kit – can’t wait too long or they’ll be gone!

    1. You do need to choose something to answer the question of the day to qualify for the drawings. Sponsors are only willing to provide these prizes if they are sure that their sites are being visited. You can choose more thing. It is hard, I agree!

  38. Lee

I am loving on the candle mat kits – the Autumn Vine one is cute and would be fun to make for one of my friends. Thank you for the pattern for the apple mat! I need to go through and pull out some felt and find buttons! Thank you !

  39. Lynne Cigal

The colors of the wool and the beautiful, clever patterns inspire me to consider trying some wool projects. The Bittersweet Fall Wall Hanging kit would be a great way to start!

  40. Amy Pingot

I just visited One of the Flock’s website and found all of their kits adorable. My favorite would have to be the “The Falling in Love” wool candle mat kit.

    1. Debbie Miller Meyer

One of the Flock’s website is absolutely awesome.  I’m in love with the Woodland Creatures bundle.  There were so many others as well and I got so many ideas from all the penny rugs shown.  Thank you, Carole, for the Apple Penny rug pattern.  I’ll begin this tomorrow!

  41. Jennie Cruzan

I really like the Fall Flowers felt collection. First time to work with wool. Looking forward to it.

  42. Deb

I love hand work (EPP is my passion) but have never tried any wool work. After visiting ONE OF THE FLOCK I am totally inspired. I would start with the Penny Posies Candle Mat. It appears to be a little on the simpler side and has a a kind of groovy vibe.

  43. Sandi Scarlett

I have tried some wool but not very much. I would probably go with the Snow Girls Candle Mat kit or the Snowflake kit. Thanks for a chance to win.

  44. Juana Ibanez

The Candy Corn Felt Collection made me laugh out loud.  I also need to get the Halloween Felted Candy Corn. Maybe I will make some candy corn penny rugs for the mason jars… Thank you for the ideas and sponsors to get us the great supplies to see our visions get made.

  45. Judie Wookey

I loved the Thanksgiving wreath felt collection. The colors are gorgeous. Thank you for introducing me to oneoftheflock!

  46. Donna Flanery

One of the Flock has some beautiful bundles and kits. I especially like the Picking Pumpkins candle mat kit with the white pumpkins. It looks quite elegant.

  47. Timmes Ross

I can’t wait to do this project- I love it! and one of the flock has great supplies!
    Many thanks!

  48. Deborah Doucett

I loved the One of the Flock site! I am new to wool applique and love all the possibilities. My choice is for the Pansy Beauty.

  49. Nancy Burbacher

The Victorian Treasure ornaments are my favorite right now! Subject to change every time a new pattern is posted!!!! Going to purchase the pattern and get started on ornaments for each family member, a tradition I started long ago! Thank you for the Apple Penny mat pattern!

  50. Lisa England

The kit that really caught my eye is the
SWEET HONEYCOMB Candle Mat Embroidery Kit. Gorgeous! I might have to also pick out something smaller to start since I am a beginner.

  51. ejwalker5

The 3 cute pumpkins kit would be great to make & then place one at each place setting during our family Thanksgiving gathering . Simple…won’t take up too much space on the table and the guests can take their little pumpkin home to decorate their own table. Thinking of using several different shades of wool for the pumpkins.

  52. Clara endsley

I love that store!! I would purchase the pumpkin wool kit!! I also like the candy corn. There is so much to look at! Clara

  53. Anita Simmons Jackson

Their Cheerful Chickadees Candle Mat is just gorgeous! What a great site! I’ll be checking back with them. I’m not usually a wool worker. But these are sweet!

  54. Would love to have one of those DIY Needle felting animal kits, but I don’t know if that is something that I would know how to make. So I think I would probably choose the Peek-a-Boo Kitty kit. Thank you!
