Where has this summer gone? Staying at home is becoming a bit strange as the months are going by without the usual activities. For many, this school year will be different too, and what better time to sew up a Back to School theme quilt with sampler blocks of all kinds. Thank you to our blog hop hostess Carolina Moore of Always Expect Moore for organizing a Quilt Block Mania event. There are some adorable blocks available for you to do a Back to School quilt, wall hanging or door decoration for your home school. Block designs include apples and bookworms, books, pencils, a school bus, and a lot more, including my block of a little red schoolhouse. My block combines a bit of embroidery with a traditional pieced block. Be sure to see the end of this post for a giveaway!
I’ll show you the quick tutorial first. Begin this block by cutting all the pieces, then laying them out according to the pattern in the download below.
Begin sewing the half square triangles first.
Then, assemble the row with the door and windows. Sew the gold window squares to the red house squares first. Chain piece these with the door unit for efficiency.
Continue with the assembly, making three sub-units.
Assemble the rows.
Use a quarter-inch foot with a flange for accuracy.
All done with the piecing.
Using your favorite marking method, put the letters in the red bar between the top two windows. I like these silver water erasable markers by Quilter’s Choice.
Embroider with a complementary color of floss, using three strands.

School house and house blocks are always such a welcome sight…..perfect project for this time of the year.
I checked out the summer quilt and it looks like fun too- maybe next year! Online school only to happen in our area.
Adorable project. Fun to see all the different back to school bloocks.
Thanks for sharing!
I’m inspired to make some of these blocks for my grandnieces & nephews. They’ve been schooling at home & who knows what will happen after Labor Day this year. Proposals seem to include some days in class & some days at home. I think a placemats for each could be fun.
Love the block! Looks like it is a 12.5″ raw edge.
Didi 😊
The red school house is so cute. I am still working on my twist quilt.
This is so cute!!! Aaak, another quilt I need to make.
I love all of the adorable blocks. Yours is sweet Carole
Lovely block!
Great school blocks, what a nice variety!!
So many cute blocks, and they are so tempting to make! Thanks for sharing them all. Are you experiencing wind and rain from the hurricane?
Great looking schoolhouse! Reminds me of the one I went to as a kid, though it was one story.
Love your School House block! I did your Scrap Dance Minuet quilt–the top is all done and awaiting quilting–I am deciding if I want to try it on my home machine or rent time on a Long-Arm.
These are lovely blocks and it is great to be able to add your own touch.
That is a very cute design for a quilt and very appropriate for this time of year. I kind of wish more schools were red. It seems many of the schools in the area have colored metal roofs, but not red.
Your schoolhouse definitely fits the theme. I like the addition of the embroidery,
