Worldwide Quilting Day Show

Last Saturday was our local guild show for Worldwide Quilting Day at our small shopping mall. The stands and black drapes were set up along a wall, and the entries were pinned to them. The show was set up and ready to view before the mall opened. There were 31 entries, and visitors in the mall were encouraged to vote for their three favorites.

As usual, the creativity and imagination of our members is amazing. This challenge was all about imagination, so even more so this year. In most of the entries, the challenge fabric was easy to see, which was a requirement. There were traditionally pieced works along with landscapes. The one in the middle on the bottom row was three dimensional, with a little kitty sitting on a wall. I wish I had gotten a close up shot of it.

Lots of entries had animals or birds. Mine was on this panel on the right with an extraordinary spider web, and a whimsical bird.

More than one had hot air balloons. Trees and flowers were prominent.

This grouping had one of the more impressive entries, the middle of the top row green one. It was made by Gail J, and was three dimensional. The challenge fabric was what you saw looking at it straight on from the front.

If you looked at it from the left side, you saw a tree in full summer leaf.

And then from the right, you saw it in a winter scene with snow. Update – The pattern is in the book Trispective 3-in-1 Quilt by Flora Joy. Link provided to Amazon.

Two entries showed bears. This panel had another eye-popping design.

Deanna H did a self portrait in thread painting with embroidered words where she made up another verse to the song. Her vision included dancing snowmen, with winter packing up to leave while spring sun arrives.

This section contained yet another extraordinary entry, the one on the upper left.

Terrie S did a collage of paper-pieced sunburst blocks in Judy Neimeyer style set on point over a mountain view. There are airplane buttons or charms sewed in the sky. The amount of work here is staggering.

This ocean scene was on the same section. Mary C did this beautiful piece with lots of applique. She added corals and fish to the challenge fabric for a seabed, then two sections of water with a schooner boat on the waves heading toward the lighthouse.

Overall it was a wonderfully creative show, with a lot of inspiration.

We won’t know who won ribbons until the April guild meeting. The show is not judged. Instead, the public gets to votre for their three favorites. We’ll see if my predictions line up with the votes, and I’ll try to remember to get more pictures of the winners then. You’ll be able to see the entries at our Garden of Quilts show in May if you are in the area.

So much talent!!! If possible, would you let us know how to get the pattern (if there is one) to make the ‘blind’ quilt that shows the summer and winter tree. I think I can figure it out, but a pattern would make it easier. Keep up the great work ladies!

As always, you inspire with every post. That lenticular quilt was amazing! I am counting on you to get with Gail J. to find out how she was able to get those individual slats into the quilt without buckling the frame around them. I am guessing some kind of foam with fabric fused on three sides to get the effect. Are the trees from a panel or her own printing on fabric? Stunning! Thank you! Juana

What an amazing show and lots of creative members in your guild. It’s wonderful that you have a mall that allows you to set up and share your talents with the public. I must admit that the Lenticular quilt was pretty impressive and I had to google it to understand how it was done. Thank you for sharing all of the entries with us. So inspiring.

I have seen some three dimensional at several quilt shows over the years and they always look so good and you wonder how they did it so perfectly.

What a fabulous show of creativity, Carole! That 3-dimensional project is especially neat. It looks like it took a lot of patience to construct! I would have loved to see all the quilts in person!
