Setting the Thanksgiving Table

Our Thanksgiving table is set for two, as we spend this day with each other. Starting with a special breakfast, we spend the day relaxing and enjoying parades, football and food. I place the settings so we can look out on our wonderful mountain view during the meal.

I put my Turkey Talk Placemats and table topper on our pub table and selected turkeys and pilgrims to create the centerpiece.

This year I put white stoneware dinner plates on copper chargers with the turkey salad plates on top. Crystal water glasses, individual salt and pepper shakers, and our good silverware are added to the place settings.

The gold color napkins are held with Happy Thanksgiving napkin rings.

On the table, the ceramic turkey gravy boat takes center stage. I’ve had it for many years, and it always reminds me of my mother. I got it on a day trip we took, and she begged to use it that year for Thanksgiving. After that, she kept stealing it from me every holiday. No matter who hosted, the gravy boat always managed to end up at her house after the holiday. She loved it. I set it on a decorated copper charger.

These pilgrims were hers as well. They are exquisitely crafted and precious. I placed them on the table this year, with a little turkey and a real pumpkin.

My tiny chipmunks are on the table topper, too. These little guys are just too cute.

The table can be set days in advance, so it is not a chore on the big day.

Simply using fall theme dishes and some pumpkins makes a nice table too. see the Thanksgiving edition on my post Tablescapes for Autumn Jubilee 2022.

With a change of tablecloth to cream and adding quilted topper, my Autumn Jubilee Tablescape 2023 uses the same pumpkin bowls and leaf plates, but has a different look.

Another table for six used rustic items like pine cones and wood discs for the centerpiece with faux fall leaves and little pumpkins.

From 2014, this table was simple using just a few fall inspired items. The pumpkin centerpiece is set on a faux leaf garland. The pumpkin bowls were a recent purchase then. They are set on the good china plates, with burgundy chargers, and plain placemats in a fall plaid. This time I put the napkins on the bread plates, just to be different.

But, what if you don’t have all the special plates and chargers that I have? You can still create a lovely holiday table with what you can find around your home. One year, at my mother-in-laws house, I nabbed one of her scarves in fall colors to use as the base for a runner on the table, adding some candles and the serving pieces from her china. It was simple and lovely, and made the table special. Get out the good china and silver if you have it. Some candles and fall leaves collected from the yard would do for a centerpiece. Add some pine cones if you are lucky enough to have some of those lying around. A couple of little pie pumpkins from the grocery store go a long way to adding fall color to a table. The added bonus there is you can bake them and eat them, no storage needed. One thing I recommend to those who do not have storage space is to scavenge the thrift shops for fall inspired items, then just donate them back when the holiday is over.

How do you make your Thanksgiving table special?

  1. Your tables always look so beautiful & inviting even just for the two of you!

When our children were little we were always traveling for Thanksgiving. Later I would be in charge of the meal prep at my parent’s home where all the siblings & cousins came.

Now we have just a quiet day. We enjoy a special breakfast, watch the parade, special movies & football and enjoy a mid afternoon meal with snacks & pie in the evening. (I may even get some bindings stitched!)

I’m thankful for you and how you share your talents & gifts with the blogging community. Happy Thanksgiving to you!

No one does a tablescape better than you do. Truly amazing! Dinner with my daughter on Thanksgiving so I am anxious to see her table. Have a lovely day. Blessings to you and your hubby.

Beautiful table setting! Ours is for two this year and pulled out the nice china and a few pumpkins from my collection of them! I agree a pie pumpkin is worth its weight – makes everything festive and then I cook the pumpkin up for recipes and make pumpkin seeds – I give little mason jars of them to my family at Christmas – they love them! Happy Thanksgiving!

Carole-what a beautiful table! That turkey gravy boat was a great find! It is nice to have a few pieces that bring back memories. For me, it is an old Tom Turkey vase that was my grandmother’s and then my mother’s and now mine. I bring it out and fill it with fall flowers each year. I also enjoyed the last post with all of the recipe links. I love all things butternut squash and am planning to try the lasagne. It looks very tasty. I hope that you and your husband have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I suspect you will be enjoying a few football games thru the weekend.

happy Thanksgiving, Carole. Love Your table and the sweet sentiment of your mom and the gravy boat. Those tiny chipmunks are adorable!

  7. You inspire all of us with your beautiful table settings. I love the story about that gravy boat & your mom. What a precious memory! I’m setting for 9 this year and will use those placemats I made over the years during Autumn Jubilee and a table runner from one of the years. Happy Thanksgiving.

Your tablescapes are always so fun to see! I love your fall dishes, and that turkey gravy boat just takes the cake! I can see why your mom loved it so much. I have my hexagon tabletopper on the table with a pumpkin, candle, and some autumn angels on it. I’m looking forward to a quiet day with coffee and football and time to read and some good food. Happy Thanksgiving, Carole!

So lovely! The chipmunks would definitely take center place on my table. Nothing fancy here, but it’s delightful to see your current & previous settings.

  10. All your table settings are beautiful! I’m glad that this year I don’t have to set the table (though I will miss not using my Turkey dishes but I’ll use them for “regular dining” for a few more days till the Christmas ones come up!) But when I WAS doing it, there were those dishes and my mom’s crystal and silver. The centerpiece changed from year to year!
