This week will be hit and miss for working on projects. I need to get the special one farther along for a quilt along later in the month. At this point, I am just not sure how I can work it around the calendar. So, much will depend on how much will get done this week. I have stitched out another Christmas embroidery. I began by choosing colors that match the accent fabric I planned to use. The green is more of a pine green rather than a Christmas green.

I found a bunch of Christmas words on one of the embroidery websites having sales over the past week.

One of the problems with my idea for this project is the lack of appropriate supplemental fabrics. I know I had a small bag left, with some of the adorable mitten print left over from this Santa project. But, I just haven’t found it yet.

Remember when I was at retreat in February, and accidentally cut the legs off one of my gingerbread men? This was a hot pad set kit I had gotten from Fat Quarter Shop. When I pulled it out of the closet, I realized I might have some of those fabrics left in another bag somewhere. I just need to find it and they might work for the embroidery above.

While I was at retreat, I fused the pieces down in place on the pad base that I made, but stopped because I didn’t have any trim with me to go further.

This week, I made it into a gingerbread gal with a new linen lace dress to cover the cuts. I pinned the piece to the applique and manipulated it until it seemed to fit right.

Then I top stitched it into place.

I don’t like how the part folded under can be seen so easily with the sheerness of the lace. So, next will be to un-stitch an edge and add another layer underneath to make the whole look more opaque. This project will go to retreat for finishing.

The tomatoes at the market looked fabulous, and I have been craving a tomato pie. So I picked up several large slicers, along with some sweet onions for use later.

Sliced and put on paper towels, these were left to drain for 24 hours.

I went out to the garden and picked fresh basil and parsley.

Then the tomatoes were layered with the herbs, and chopped green onions.

Spread the topping on and cover with shredded mozzarella cheese. I like to add a bit of chopped herbs to the top to bake into the cheese because it looks nice. I also sprinkle with a bit of black pepper. There is a light sprinkle of salt on the tomatoes as they are drying, so no need to add additional salt.

Yum!! Here’s my recipe – Carole’s Tomato Pie

These tomatoes smelled so good I decided to save some of the seeds as I was cleaning them. I do not know what variety they are, but will see if they grow next spring.

At this point, I need to get back to the bigger Christmas project so hopefully I will have some fun stuff for you later in the month. Off to the sewing room!

Your gingerbread girl is so cute with her lacy dress! Looking forward to seeing how you finish that hotpad. The tomato pie always looks so delicious, and I’ve never tried it. Putting it back on my list for this summer when I find some good tomatoes!
This is great timing for me because we’ve subscribed to a weekly community supported agriculture box. We received the prettiest heirloom tomatoes just today! QUESTION: Do you leave the tomatoes in the refrigerator for the 24 hours? I always store ours outside the fridge.
I like how you reengineered the gingerbread project! A dress was a great solution!
