Sunday Chat – Luft Wasser and Garden

Saturday was the perfect day for a car show. It is spring, and there are a lot of shows, drives and socials on all the club calendars. This is the first big event of the year for us, held in Brevard, NC yesterday. It is called Luft Wasser, which is German for Air Water, and refers to the two different methods of cooling engines. We had 200 Porsches register for the event, and over 180 showed up. It was a mile of Porsches!

They were parked on both sides of Broad Street, plus another row down the middle of the street. Near the top of the street, vendor booths took the center row.

In a side parking lot, a special display of track cars showed off fun colors and graphics.

At the top of the hill, the featured exhibit was of air-cooled engine cars, mostly 911 models of various vintages.

A few older ones came to show. This is a 356A Speedster in Meissen Blue from 1958.

This 356 coupe is an ivory white color.

Many of our club members have air cooled engine cars, and they call themselves the Air Brigade. I think it is neat to see all the different colors lined up.

Such fun, and we were surprised to find many more in spectator parking area as we were leaving.

Back home, the garden continues its progression of color through spring. This week it was the irises turn to shine. I have several varieties, but once again I did not remove the leaves and fall detritus from the rhizomes early enough, so blooming is spotty. The white ones are gorgeous, pristine beauties with pale gold beards.

Two bloomed at once, with more buds promising more to come.

The dark burgundy falls and lighter plum color standards (upright petals) are accented with bright gold beards.

The blooms are really large on this variety.

In the second iris bed, these smaller pale lavendar ones have small blooms. These are pretty, but not as impressive as the other two.

On the mountainside behind our home, the stand of wild May Apples is up and blooming. They won’t be visible once all the undergrowth gets going. Each plant makes a single white flower under the main leaves.

The flowers are in the process of making their fruit, which is toxic unless it is fully ripe. I’ve never tried one, leaving them for the critters instead.

Speaking of critters, Gracie came by for a sandwich, taking it to the branch of the oak tree to eat in comfort and peace.

This gal came by for some whole grain bread bits and a sprinkle of sunflower seeds. She was wandering in the meadow, but came up when she saw me. You can see a bunch of ajugas (purple) in the taller grass past her. They all got chopped off when the meadow was mowed.

Now that the weather is getting warmer, we have a lot of car club events on the schedule, and I am looking forward to having some fun!

What are you doing this weekend?

  1. A glorious day for the car club to be out and about. I loved Sunday drives that we would do for fun when we were children. The flowers are gorgeous; know mine will follow soon after yours. Have a lovely week, Carole.

The Car Club event must have been great fun with so many attending proudly with their sporty motors!

Your Irises are beautiful and the garden is getting into showing off that it’s Spring! Makes one want to smile!

That looks like a really fun event with your Porsche group! And I love your irises – so pretty. it is cold and rainy here in Colorado this weekend, so not much is going on outdoors. A good weekend to get caught up on things inside the house, though!

I too didn’t think to clear out the leafs and things from the iris’s – one area has not problem as it is a bit protected from fall leaves but other areas I have few blooms. One area though surprised me with more blooms that usual and I figured out that the heavy rains in winter flowed through this area washing fall leaves out! that was a plus as it hadn’t had many blooms in this area – another area got covered with that washout and has not one bloom

Your iris are beautiful. My iris don’t usually bloom until June, but everything is ahead of schedule here in northern Ohio.

Love the rainbow of colors – but I do have a fav…Meissen Blue. Love the vintage cars and all the history behind this. Thanks for sharing this with us – I can feel the wind in my hair!

  7. Your car show looked like a fun event, and I am amazed your irises are blooming! You guys are a good 6 weeks ahead of us! This weekend was for resting; I spent most of it cutting out Amanda’s negligée and robe. It is a relief to finally be sewing it, but not is it slow going. I was hoping to finish by the 30th, but I doubt that will happen. I have most of tomorrow morning, so we’ll see how far I get.

  8. What a jolly good time you must have had at the show. That looks like fun. I won’t see irises till June. They remind me of my Aunt Iris and are always a favorite (although I only seem to have one that ever blooms.) I have four or five days to get into that little garden and pull weeds (weather permitting) until surgery 2!
