Autumn Jubilee in the Sewing Room

For our last project post of Autumn Jubilee, we are going to play with Mason jars in the sewing room, and then preview a few new releases from our giveaway sponsor.

Using Mason jars to separate buttons by color is a fun way to display your button collection. I put bits of Harvest Festival fabrics on the lids. The one on the left has a plastic ring from a cross stitch kit.

Making a sewing gift from a Mason jar is fun for the fall season. Using a pumpkin print, cut a square roughly twice the size of the ring. You could cut a circle if you wish, but I just rough cut a square and trim later.

Place the fabric right side down on top of the ring. Stuff the middle with fiberfill, pushing a mound through the opening in the ring.

Then place the lid on top of the stuffing. Fold the excess over the lid and glue in place. Cut away the excess fabric.

Fill the jar with sewing goodies like thread, needles and thread snips.

I put a couple of straight pins in the top so the recipient knows it is a pin cushion.

Now, for a bit more fun, let’s use our Jar Wrap idea in the sewing room. When I saw this design, it was perfect for a Mason jar themed Autumn Jubilee, because Sewing Is My Jam! The dimensions for this wrap will fit the smaller size jar. Find this downloadable embroidery design on the Sulky website – Sewing Is My Jam.

Here are a couple of tips to make embroidery easier. First, line up your threads in color order in an egg carton. I put numbers in the bottom. When I use a color more than once, I put a bit of paper in that slot until I’ve used that one first, then I move it to the second spot. This keeps me organized so I know what color is next, plus it keeps them from rolling off.

Here, I had more than 12 colors, so the last ones went into a second egg carton. Notice I also changed the color on the jar from blue to purple.

Tip #2 – Every time the machine stops to change thread color, clip the jump threads. They are longer before other colors go over them, and easier to clip.

Cut the embroidery to size. For our project, it is 3-1/2-inches square.

Add side bars in a sewing print. Cut the side pieces 3-1/2-inches high x 4-inches wide. Add 3-inch loops to one end, and sew to a backing with batting, leaving an opening for turning. Then add 1/2-inch buttons. The steps are shown in the Jar Wraps post.

All done and ready to use.

The wrap fits the smaller Ball jar.

I put white buttons in mine, with more of the same sewing print fabric on top.

And then, I started looking at other things that are roughly the same size. Oh, look at that, it fits the plastic cup I use for tea and water. This will help keep it cold.

I took it to retreat and put it on my travel coffee mug. It was fun to show it around. And there was no mistaking which coffee mug was mine.

I think it might fit a French Press as well. But I gave mine away in kitchen clean out, so I don’t really know. If this one doesn’t, the larger one probably does.

Several new releases were added to my ebook collection this month. The digital download versions are less money, and take up no space on a bookshelf or in the sewing room. I can print any page, and only need to print what I need for a project. These are some fun ideas for new inspiration.

Simple Double-Dipped Quilts : Scrappy Quilts Built From Blocks With a Unique Twist by Kim Diehl. Ten quilt patterns along with basics of quilt making. The Double Dip part is using a classic block with a twist, and the twists are quite creative and fun. I won’t spoil the joy of discovery for you by revealing all, but I will give you one. She makes flying geese with the geese having patchwork centers. So creative! This one I cannot wait to play with!

Make Felt Flowers: Four Seasons of Crafting Modern Plants & Flowers By Bryanne Rajamannar – Eleven projects for making small projects with flowers. Flower patterns and instructions are divided by season, with bulb flowers like daffodils in the spring section, and textural natural things for fall and winter like pine cones and wheat branches. A section in the beginning has materials and basic guides. Nicely photographed throughout.

Folk Art Garden Applique Sampler : Fanciful Wool Blocks to Stitch by Erica Kaprow. Twelve sampler blocks to work in wool applique in fun and fanciful designs. Blocks are shown with the hand embroidery stitches used to create the effects. The full size patterns comprise over half of the book. Each block could be a stand alone project.

Tumbler Quilts : Just One Shape, Endless Possibilities, Play with Color and Design by Valerie Prideaux. If you think tumbler shapes only have one way to be sewn, think again. By playing with color, the number of design ideas explode. There is an extensive discussion of color with fabric selection having several pages as well. Fifteen quilt designs are given, and every one is unique.

  1. Those jars are fun! As I integrate more of my sewing things from the apartment to the cottage, my organizing will need more solutions. I love these. I would love to give the Ultimate Guide to Free Motion Quilting to a friend.

I have a friend in my quilt guild who is a wonderful hand embroiderer. She is also a fellow Star Trek aficionado (we quilters have varied interests, don’t we?) I’d love to give her the Periodic Table of Embroidery Stitches Poster on C&T Publishing because she would appreciate it.

So many ideas this month. Regretfully, I was out of town much of the month, but I look forward to going back to the posts and trying some of them. Thanks Carole for another Autumn Jubilee. I would love to give a quilting friend the Pinecone Quilts book.

The Happy Knitter Variety Puzzle book would be such fun for a dear friend who knits hats, scarfs, and afghans and donates them all. She also enjoys doing puzzles. There are a lot of lovely gifts in this section and I may go back and order a coupe of things for some other friends. Thank you, Carole for your inspiration.

Sewing is my Jam! Too perfect for this application. I love your idea of lining up the threads in an egg carton. Love the sewing kit – going to copy that for some Christmas gift bags going to fellow quilters.

My best friend decided that sewing is not her thing, but she needs something to do with her hands 🙂 – I would love to give “Make Felt Flowers
Four Seasons of Crafting Modern Plants & Flowers” to her and I think she would be really happy!

  8. Oh, sweet Mason Jars! So practical and charming. I use them more and more for all kinds of storage. Coffee that comes in the bags that have to be rolled back up and are such a pain to get my scooper into. And so cute decorated with the wrap! All of the books at C&T look great and I would give the Folk Art Garden to my sister in law, who still quilts and likes the primitive look. Such cute designs!

My niece is a new quilter and doing a fabulous job. I would love to give her the barn star sampler book. I found a free Kim Diehl pattern that i will share with her. Thank you!

Hi there! Love your posts–lifts my spirits. Are there any pics of a couple of tumbler quilts?
    Thanks,
    Julia

  11. Fun little jar ideas! A friend and I did the sewing kit with pin cushion lid for table favors at a retreat once! I still use mine, in my chairside basket. Keeps the notions all together! Using the jar wrap as a cup cozy is awesome ! Who doesn’t need one of those? Thanks for a great Autumn Jubilee!

Cozy Modern Quilts would be the perfect book for my friend who is always making wonderful modern quilts. Love your ideas on using mason jars. I have enjoyed your Autumn Jubilee!

Purr-fact Patch quilts would be ideal for my cat loving daughter-in-law or the resin jewelry since she has a jewelry business and she’s always looking for ways to expand! Thank you C&T Publishing for your generous giveaway!!

The Barn Star Sampler Eco Tote would make a quilting friend happy. While on C & T’s site I rediscovered their free patterns.

  15. Kathy E.'s avatar Kathy E.

What a sweet idea to make a sewing gift out of a mason jar with a bonus pin cushion on top! If only I had even one friend who was a sewist…oh well! I may have to make one for myself! C&T Publishing has a beautiful puzzle that my husband and I would enjoy during the winter months called Free Tibet Quilt Jigsaw Puzzle. This would be a great gift in many ways!

  16. Sandra's avatar Sandra

My girlfriend would love Cool Cotton and Whimsical Wool Quilts by Kim Diehl. She does the most beautiful hand stitched wool projects. So many fun ideas for Mason jar gifts running through my head after reading this post. Thanks for this month. It has been grand.

  17. Love the mason jar pin cushion idea as a receptacle for gifts. Looking for fun ideas for Christmas exchange. From the sponsor’s website –

I found so many great gift ideas on the C&T Publishing site! I would gift the Jennifer Chiaverini playing cards to my MIL, the Festival of Quilts jigsaw puzzle by Bonnie K. Hunter to my sister, and one of the many password keeper books to myself!

It is such a hard choice but the Quilt Builder Card Deck will probably beat out the new Kim Diehl simple book. I love Kim and have several of her books already. The jar wrap is way too cute!

Your jar decorating ideas are so fun! I was just looking at a blog yesterday that showed the quilter storing her fabric scraps in jars. They made a cute display. At C&T, the Folk Art Garden book looked like something I would give a local friend who enjoys wool applique.

  21. My husband has become interested in sewing and his first sewing project, taken on while I was at work one day, was a pair of jeans! He has no fear. I think he’d love “Stash Books Leather Craft by Amy Glatfelter.” I could see him making all the projects in it and then blasting off with bigger and more complicated self-drafted items!

  22. June Neigum's avatar June Neigum

I think I found my next hand project. The book Pinecone Quilts by Betty Ford Smith caught my eye in the book section of CT Publishing and sounds like just the ticket for a lap project watching TV. The mason jar wrap with the embroidery is something I want to do for gifts this year.

  23. Joan Sheppard's avatar Joan Sheppard

Love thejar ideas! And the bands! I have also used the bands – starting with the “slap bands” – idea from the kids – in the middle. It’s not too tight but with the plastic in the middle keeps it’s shape. Or on my wrist for pins, the plastic keeps me from stabbing myself.

  24. rita75213's avatar rita75213

I would want the quilt builder card deck !! That looks really fun !
Carole…the “gift” jars are so cute !!
Would make great Xmas tuck ins

C&T has such fun books. For a gift, I like the Sensational Quilts playing cards for my bridge friends. We’ve been playing together more than 30 years. And for me, the tumbler quilt book will be on my Christmas list. I love the look of those quilts.

Your jar wraps are very cute. Good idea with the egg carton to keep your thread organized for the design.

Thanks for such a fun jubilee!

  26. I use a lot of jars in my sewing room, but never thought of decorating their lids. So cute! I’d like to gift myself the Sashiko book! 😂

  27. Connie S Wolfe's avatar Connie S Wolfe

Wow! So many things to explore on the C&T website. I went down the rabbit hole with the free patterns finding many that will be great for the Comfort Quilts group. My gift choice would be the Bonnie Hunter playing cards to give my sister for her snowbird RV trip this year.

The puzzles are cool, and the coloring books for grown-ups, but I think my favorite is Whale and I–Eco Pouch Set. Lots of options for some of my quilter friends.

  29. Carol C Thomas's avatar Carol C Thomas

After my latest visit to CT Publishing, I would give a friend the 2024 calendar–a gift for all month.

“2024 Wall Calendar Red & Green Antique Quilts from the Poos Collection
    Kay and Lori Lee Triplett”

  30. quilterpt's avatar quilterpt

What unique ideas for decorating mason jars! I would love to have either Just Two Charm Pack Quilts by Cheryl Brickey, or the new Angela Walters book coming out next year from C & T!

  31. Becky's avatar Becky

My friend would love one of the coloring books or maybe a puzzle for the evenings when it’s time to unwind after a day of quilting.

Love the mason jars for buttons…on my to do list.
I have a friend who is poorly but she loves paper piecing. So I would love to give her 60 Fabulous Pieced Stars to encourage her creativity.

What a fun project and useful! I think the Sachiko stitching book would be good as a gift for my daughter . She wants to leant this!

  34. Karen Addleman's avatar Karen Addleman

I saw that there was a periodic table of quilt blocks. That would be a great gift for my sister who quilts and was also a chemistry teacher.

  35. Susan N.'s avatar Susan N.

I already reuse canning jars in various sizes and other glass jars with lids to organize/contain items as I can see what is what without having to actually open a bunch of containers to find what I am looking for as labels sometimes fall off.

I think any one of the Password Keepers would be a great gift for several people I know.

  36. Sandi Scarlett's avatar Sandi Scarlett

Your mason jars look so nice. That is going to be a fun project! I think my friend would like Simple Double-Dipped Quilts by Kim Diehl. Thanks for a chance to win.
