Time for the August Check in for Stashbusters. Did you finish a project? Did you succumb to the freebie table at guild? Was a bit of retail therapy required during Shop Hop? Did you give away any yardage or scraps?

I got a bit ahead this month as I finished Quadrille and can now count out all that fabric! Total 7 yards out for top, backing and binding.

My Christmas in July quilt along counts one yard out for top, backing and binding.

Now the fabric in. I was delighted to receive this box of British theme fabrics from Brenda for our MINI club’s annual Silent Auction during our Christmas Party weekend. Thanks so much, Brenda!! I’ll be working out something using them for a lap quilt or wall hanging for the event. I have a deadline of Thanksgiving to get it done. Total fabric in 3 yards.

Ah, then there was shop hop. I usually do not buy fabric on these jaunts, but there were two prints that I just had to have. I also found a bargain on some partially used thread cones at a shop with longarm service. Since we were a group of four hopping together, we all got a fat quarter at each shop. We visited five shops that day, and I tried to choose black tone on tone fabrics at each one. I got three, but two of the shops didn’t have any black. So, I chose a green tone on tone at one, and the pretty floral at the other. Total shop hop damage +4-1/4 yards. Not too bad.

Isn’t this gorgeous? It was on sale 30% off. Two yards on this one.

So, here are my totals for July.
July Fabric IN = +7-1/4
July Fabric OUT = –8 yards
July Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = -3/4 yards
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = -83 yards out
I’ll hopefully have good numbers next month with some little quilts for the woodworkers. If you’d like to do some for the drive, see the page Cradle Quilt Drive.
I have visions of Autumn Jubilee with this one. One yard purchased. It is a darker black than this picture appears.

As a reminder, and for new readers, here is how I estimate yardage out with quilts made from scraps. I measure the top width and height, multiply them together, to get the total square inches. For example, a 60×70 top is 4200 square inches. One yard of fabric is generally 40 inches wide x 36 inches or 1440 square inches. So, divide 4200 by 1440, and you get 2.91666, and I’d call that 3 yards. That is for the top, count the same for the back, and then add what you use for binding. I don’t bother with trying to count the seam allowances, although you could add 1/4 yard to the total accommodate those if you wish. Is it precise? No, but it is close enough for Stashbusters.
If you need to find your previous numbers, click on Stashbusters July and scroll to the comments. And don’t worry if you miss a month, or you’ve totally lost track. You can jump back in at any time, start over if you need to, it is totally up to you. The idea is awareness, no deadlines or strict rules apply. You can copy and paste the lines below into the comment box, then fill in your totals. Oh, and there is no deadline to report either, anytime this month is good.
Now, it is your turn to report your totals for July. How’d you do?

July’s shop hopping and a never-to-be-finished king size quilt were not kind to my totals. I picked up some cute fabrics for pillowcases to be donated and also a panel with coordinates for a toddler quilt. Hopefully I can make a positive dent in my totals next month. But I’m thankful the totals are still in the right direction.

Carole,
Another good month! Slowly and steadily working through my stash and many gifted scraps. I finished my red Oh, My Stars using flying geese for star points rather than HSTs. Gave it away to a red thread sister on the weekend. Thanks for he tracking fun!
Jan
Hi Carole, Since I have a little extra time this morning I thought I would tell you how impressed I am with your “Stash Busting” this year, And, I continue to be impressed with your finished projects from fabrics to paper to flowers to food to rocks to tablescapes to all the other mediums you work with throughout the year. You have inspired me to work on destashing my paper supplies. Anyone coming in cannot see what I have accomplished, but each empty shelf gives me lots of satisfaction. And, I am looking forward to purchasing small amounts of paper supplies in the new year (which is closer than it should be). I will wish you a good day and go make a few more cards for donations. A thankful web friend, Lenora
July:
Input: Well ,I’ve fallen off track- there’s been a lot of gathering of fabrics and very little output.
Actually I can’t even recall when I purchased some of my increasing stash but here goes: 4yards of white to use for background for a quilt I’m making for a friend who gave me bits of fabrics he had purchased in NYC garment district-Egyptian cotton from England-I have made eight blocks so far and love working with this fabric. I also purchased two yards of fabric from the Hoffman 2023 challenge as well as 20 fat quarters-the deadline for entry is September 1-so busy working on that now. In July I went to visit my sister in Chicopee, Mass and she took me to a local quilt shop-I purchased approximately four yards of fabric for a special project I am helping a friend with. While there, we also visited a fabric warehouse, and I picked up three more yards of fabric to be used in the future. Upon my return home I went to an estate sale of a former guild member and picked up more fabric-guessing another three yards. I think now I am caught up to date.
Input: 18 yards
Output: 0
I did absolutely NO sewing this month, NO shopping either! I hosted some international visitors for a week, so the first half of the month was spent preparing for that visit, then the visit itself, then catching up on things after the visit. A weekend trip to Chicago at the end of the month was also in the plan. So, my YTD total stayed the same as July’s check-in. I’ve already been sewing this month and hope to show a change in that total when we check in again in September.
YTD total = -21 yds out
July Fabric IN = 5.75
July Fabric OUT = 37
July Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = 31.25
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = 141.5
One of our guild members passed away and the family had a sale. I wanted to get fabric to remember her by…ended up with some beautiful tone on tone fat quarters. It took all of my resolve not to buy more as she had exquisite taste!
I had three quilts in the OUT category. Virtual high five! And gave away yardage.
I’m reading Marie Kondo’s book…maybe I’ll Kondo my fabric stash. Many older pieces that are not bringing me joy but perhaps someone else would benefit from them.
Beautiful fabrics coming into your sewing room. I’ve lost track of fabric counts, a couple of months ago. I’m as bad with tracking stashbusters as I am with UFO’s….they are in my head but I just don’t want to write them down!! I am moving things along! With 2 king size quilts bound and labeled last month I feel good about what has gone out of the sewing room. I did succumb to the “free table” at our quilt bee last week. One of my Queen Bee friends is destashing as she is getting ready to move into a new space. Every month I keep my back to the stacks, but this month I fell prey to the black and whites. It’s still on my table waiting for measuring and boxing up. NO to the link party on my account, because I am a failure at keeping track. 😉
I love that purple, teal, yellow, and gray fabric. I see a scrap dance mystery in its future. Lol.

Another month of “no quilting on the frame”, so no finishes. It’s just been too hot to stay in my sewing room for more than 5 minutes! Praying for a break in this weather. I did drag out my shirt tubs and broke down all the whole shirts. Also added 6 new ones to the mix. Already have plans for 4 of them in upcoming quilts. Still in the negative for the year.
July Fabric IN = 6 large shirts…6 yds

You received some lovely fabric for your British quilt.
I was just thinking about stashbusters. I am pleased with where I am and hope to keep the negative number rising!

Hello, my name is Julie & I’m a fabriholic. Unfortunately I fell off the wagon in July and succumbed to accepting fabric donated to my club with the express wish that it is used for comfort quilts. Eventually quilts will be completed, but for now, despite sewing every day, all I actually finished in July was 3 rope bowls (and a baby sweater that doesn’t count).
July Fabric IN = 1 yard
July Fabric OUT = 2 yards
July Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = -1 yd

I hope to have a few projects finished this month and have more yardage to count out.

I like seeing everyone’s stash buster projects on FB. I doubt I would follow many links though
A visit from my son for a week and carpal tunnel surgery conspired to keep me from finishing anything. I have a queen size quilt top finished and ready to be sandwiched. My goal is to get it done by the end of August.
I.like seeing everyone’s stash buster projects on FB. Doubt that I would follow links though.
I don’t think I bought any fabric in July – is that possible? 🙂 I did finish a 60 inch square quilt on the very last day of July, though! So I’m counting that as 5 yards out.
July In: 0 yards
July Out: 5 yards

WOW, July was busy. On the 10th, my oldest granddaughter gave birth to twin boys 4 weeks early, but they weighed 5#2, and 5#4!! I go to SC next month to see them. Then, I made a SLEW of quilts.#37 this year was 10″ patriotic squares with snowballs, #38 was Topple done in Air Force, #39 patriotic Strips with panel inserts, #40 Floral kaliedescope, #41 is Button Box done in football fabrics, #42 was scrappy social climber in blues, pink, yellow, #43 QOVF mystery 20 Stars for 20 years, #44 Flannel Bricks rose, green, cream, #45 Vintage Farm Life pattern done in Football. Soooo, nine quilts for Quilts of Valor with backs is 10 yards each is another 90 yards used this month, and ytd is 450 yards so far!! And, I donated some more fabric…..
My neighbor is working on using up her stash, and transferred 2 -1/2 yards of large scraps from her stash to mine. I ordered 5-1/2 yards of background fabric for a quilt I plan to start this winter, and another 1 yard snuck onto that order. I did complete 2 small projects in July, a table runner and a zipper pouch to offset a small bit of the incoming fabric.
July Fabric IN = 9 yards
July Fabric OUT = 1-3/4 yards
July Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = +7-1/4 yards
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = +24 -1/2 yards
Love your Brit fabrics! And your quilt and Christmas projects are great. I’m afraid my art stash doesn’t seem to diminish!
I’m on vacation where there is bad intent so I’m late coming in on stash busters. I’m still working on getting tops quilted. Did well this month. 4 quilts finished a Bulls eye large laptop, 8 yards, lots of scraps though, a log cabin table runner 2 1/2 yards, an improv vase quilt-wheelchair quilt-2 1/2 yards and an English Paper pieced lap wheelchair size -5 yards. I was good this month and brought home about 2 yards from the free table at guild. August out-18 yards. In only 2 ish yards. YTD 41 yards Out. Next month is already going down hill with this vacation. 🥰

Not so much this month, but hopefully next month will bring a good sized reduction!
Late to the party again. But here are my current numbers
July Fabric IN = 4 yds. Because I posted 6 yds in June in error, I found my invoice. 10 yds!
July Fabric OUT = -9 3/8 yds
July Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = -5 3/8
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = -14 5/8 yds
Hope I can keep up the good work!
Oh, so late on posting my July stash use numbers. I am a little sad at my numbers this month but I went to a quilt show with a bargain room. I came home with backing for at least three quilts at $3 a yard. Good investment and the backing will quite likely will jump into the OUT column later this year.
July Fabric IN = +12 yards
July Fabric OUT = –11 yards
July Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = + 1 yards
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = -73.3 yards out
I finally remembered to do this when on the computer! July was bad month for me with my favorite quilt shop closing. Did some damage! So here goes
July Fabric IN = + 25 yd
July Fabric OUT = –5 yds (donated)
June Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = 20 yds In
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In- 44.5 and – Out) = 48 out. t least I am still ahead on the out category! August should be much better again!
Another slow month. Life can get in the way sometimes, can’t it? Happy sewing!
July fabric in- 0 yds.
July fabric out- .50 yds.
July total- .50 yds.
YTD total- 10.25 yds.
Well, here I go again!! NO new fabric in, but lots out! Quilt #46 was Patriotic in Kisses pattern, #47 Scrappy Friendship Braid was a UFO!! #48 Scrappy 2.5″ frames, #49 was a pattern called Fire Island, but since I used gold with the patriotic instead of red, I renamed it Gold Rush, #50 was Navy emblem fabric with hourglass alternate blocks, #51 was again Kisses, this time scrappy, and #53 Kisses in batiks and black, and last, but not least #53 Fat Eighth Flip from Fat Quarter shop (but I used patriotic fat quarters and plaids. SO, 8 quilts and backs means 80 yards out for year to date total used 530 yards!! Yeah, me! I’m still working on a number of block of the months and another few new starts……These are all Quilts of Valor!
I leave tomorrow for Charleston area, SC to meet my 6 week old twin great-grandsons, so no sewing this week, although I snuck a little in this morning!!!
