Today the Jolly Bar Row Along begins on the Jolly Jabber blog by Fat Quarter Shop. I am one of nine bloggers invited to participate. Now I can show you a bit of the secret sewing I’ve been working on for the past couple of weeks between the end of Scrap Dance Twist, the Vintage Christmas Quilt Along, and a few other projects. This quilt is a few blocks from each of the designs in the book. The finished size of the quilt is 51 x 56, and you’ll need one Jolly Bar plus 2-5/8 yards of background fabric. You’ll need a bit more for backing and binding, plus you can use up some stash too if you like. The patterns are fun and easy, and I’ll show you the beginning today. Some of the weeks between I’ll have on Instagram, then I’ll show you my completed project at the wrap up.
I ordered the Harper’s Garden Jolly Bar to do the quilt along. My solid color is Porcelain in Bella Solids. Jolly Bar Book Vol 2 is available now at FQS.
The beginning block is Sparrow Tracks. It is an easy block with just some squares and rectangles to cut.
Mark a few squares and you have two flying geese units in no time.
A couple more seams and one is done.
Repeat for 12 blocks. These will form the top and bottom rows.
One word of caution, do not sew them together yet. There is sashing between them, and you will get those instructions at the assembly time.
The Row Along will post once a week for six weeks, with a finishing post on August 10. You’ll need to follow Jolly Jabber to get the requirements each week. Those posts will publish at 8 am Central time each week, just in case you see others earlier. See all the wonderful Moda Fabric collections Jolly Bars and the Jolly Bar Book Vol 2 available at FQS. Share your progress in our Facebook group, Friends of From My Carolina Home. Don’t forget to see what is on today’s Flash Sale!
What colors are you using for the Jolly Bar Row Along?
Hi Carole! I am participating in this sew-along also. I shopped my stash and cut my own jolly bar from a rainbow of colors and small patterns. Can’t wait to begin today!
Can you buy the bars without pinked edges. I have terrible luck with them, so I just quit using anything with pinked edges.
Hi Carole,
I will be using ‘Early Bird’ by Bonnie and Camille for Moda. My background is a tone on tone blue.
I am self taught and about 8 years into quilting. So excited to begin today.
Sandy.
I would like to cut my jolly bars from my stash because orders from the Fat Quarter Shop are taking so long. How many do we need?
I signed up for their blog so I can buy from them later.
I don’t remember exactly how many are used, but the pack has 42 rectangles. There were a few left over, but I don’t know exactly how many.
Yummy fabrics and that looks like a fun project!
Looks like fun, Carole. I love the fabrics you chose. I just finished using up my jolly bar leftovers. Maybe I’ll have to get another stack! They are fun. :o) m
Hello Carole, You have chosen lovely fabrics and I look forward to watching your quilt come together every week. So glad that you are keeping busy and having fun quilting! Have a great day!
Lovely blocks. The fabrics look great.
Looks like a very fun quilt along.
