Stashbusters December Check In

With the holidays upon us, it should be a great time for fabric out. Did you finish some projects last month? Perhaps gave some fabric away? Anything that left your sewing room for good counts.

For Fabric Out, I finished the Garden Panel Quilt and delivered it to the committee at the November meeting. Total fabric out for top, backing and binding = 6-1/2 yards

Knowing that I needed a bit more out, I pulled some fabrics from the stash, including a couple of pieces I just brought home in October. the bright floral print is one yard, the blue with bees is 1/2-yard, the others are fat quarters. Fabric scraps and yardage out = 2-1/2 yards

I also went through the Christmas fabrics again, now that I have finished all the fabric stars. Two bags of scraps, three fat quarters and a half yard piece of green with houses went to the re-home table. For fabric out, the bags are estimated by weight (about 3 yards per pound), plus the flat folds = 9 yards.

Of course, the re-home table held a few items that were irresistible. The cherry prints and the adorable chocolates came from there. On the way home, I stopped at Beginnings to buy thread, and saw this wonderful lemon print. I bought a half yard to use the lemon zipper that I got from a mystery box last summer. I liked the lining print for that project, but not the felt they sent for the outside. This will make a cuter bag. Fabric in = 1-1/2 yards.

So, here are my totals for the past month –
November Fabric IN = +1-1/2 yards
November Fabric OUT = –18 yards
November Net Total = -16.5 yards
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = -12.25 yards!

  1. I have concentrated on smaller gifts this Christmas, such as pillows, mugmats, and table toppers/runners, much of it made from the stash. I splurged on some fabrics I couldn’t resist, too, as a reward for getting those projects done. For November:

    In: +10 yards

    OUt: -4 yards

    YTD Net: -10.15 yards

    I’m in love with the Christmas house fabric in your photo. I’m including October’s last quilt here as I didn’t finish the binding until Nov 1st. I finished & donated 5 scrappy flannel baby quilts, just in time for the cold snap we’re experiencing. The 6th baby quilt was a real junk yard – I kept that one. I acquired less than a yard at the club’s scrap exchange. I’m pinning what might be the only quilt finished in December. It’s time to start holiday give-away projects; fabric will leave in smaller doses. I think it’s at least a break even for the year. I see room in the stash.

    Well, the “no buy 2025” crashed in November. I have plans to make a 3-D quilt that I designed for my son. I came across a Black Friday sale that had the needed fabric…blenders that came in 3 shades of one color. It was on sale for $3 a yard, so I got 29yds of fabric for less than $100! I couldn’t pass that up. I also added more yardage from the things I’m going through from the neighbor’s mom. I am truly running out of space!!! If I put back all the fabric I have pulled right now for pending projects, I’m going to need another fabric cabinet! Got to get that long arming done so I can sew tops faster.

    Anyway…here’s the ugly totals!

    November Fabric IN = +54 yds
    November Fabric OUT = –0
    November Net Total = +54 yds
    Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = +67.75 yds

    November flew by! I have little out because I redid a couple tops where one of the fabrics made the tops dizzying to look at. I could not in good conscience give these quilts to charity. I’ve got them apart and ready to sew so they read peaceful instead of edgy.

    I did finish a guild challenge quilt. Am looking forward to more sew time in December and hopefully can finish out the tops I started.

    I didn’t buy or otherwise acquire any fabric this month; patting myself on the back for that. I finished a table runner from a Christmas charm pack plus yardage.

    Congratulations on the numbers, Carole. Doesn’t it often seem that we take a step forward in reducing the stash and then another one or two backwards? I am very excited to note that I finally broke one hundred yards out! My daughter had a little leftover fabric from making a toddler quilt for a neighbor and left it in my quilt room last week which accounts for my fabric in last month.

    November Fabric In: 1.4 yds.;

    November Fabric Out: 4.0 yds.;

    November Net Total: -2.6 yds.;

    Y-T-D Total: -101.4 yds.

  8. Love seeing the down totals as the end of the year approaches:

    Prior YTD Fabric Used =55 yards
    Prior YTD Fabric Bought = 51 yards

    Current Month Fabric Used = 3 yards
    Current Month Fabric Bought = 0 yards

    Net Fabric = -7

  9. Nice job Carole! Your acquisitions are all sensible and you’ll use them up quickly! I don’t get that much done this month, a few pot holders and finishing Evie’s quilt for next weekend, but it’s still progress!
    November In 3 yards
    November Out 7 yards
    November Net Total -4 yards
    Year to Date -53.275 yards

    November was a make it or break it kind of month for me. I focused on finishing right to the label finishing multiple projects as well as donating fabric to multiple groups for their projects. Fabric out the door is Fabric busted out of my care.

    I still have December to reach my chosen personal goal for the year but stitching is slowing down with holiday happenings. Fingers crossed some secret time will be found to clear away a little bit more stash.

    November Fabric IN = +1.25 (Needed to finish a project.)
    November Fabric OUT = –37.25 ! (Finished three quilts and donated fabric.)
    November Net Total = 36 yards
    Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = 86 yards

    I finished one quilt, then got slowed down by letting my longarm hit a ruler and having to wait my turn to get it fixed. (Hoping it’s just a timing issue that’s easily repaired.) But I’ll take one completion for sure – it takes my total negative for the year!

    November Fabric IN = 0
    November Fabric OUT = –8.5
    November Net Total = -8.5
    Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = -2.5
