It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! Ah, yes, for me this is Autumn. I love the colors of the season, the cool crisp air, and the anticipation of the holidays especially Thanksgiving (my favorite day of the year). When I found this sentiment with an autumn theme, I had to make some projects with it. You saw it on the first hexagon project, and now let’s have more fun with it.

For this runner, embroider this motif, or a similar motif on two squares. If you like this one with the fall theme for the sentiment, find it at EmbroideryDesigns (no affiliation). Trim to 6-1/2-inches square.

Then, for the center square, start with making four half square triangles using 3-inch background and print squares. I like to use a quarter-inch ruler (like THIS ONE by Deb Tucker) to mark two lines, as this makes the sewing more accurate. Cut apart and trim to 2-1/2-inches.

Sew the background rectangles to the print rectangles for the side patches. Assemble the elements for the churn dash block.

Here is one made with the feature Give Thanks fabric line from Benartex.

Sew in rows, pressing the HSTs to the center, and the rectangles to the outside edge so the seams nest.

Audition your sashing fabric to be sure it give you the look you like.

Sew the sashing between the blocks first, then add the long side borders, and finally the short side borders. Add final borders of a fun print. Here, this one is Benartex Word Collage from the Beautiful Harvest line.

If you do not have an embroidery machine, use fussy cut motifs in place of those blocks. Simply cut a motif in a 6-1/2-inch square. I used two turkey motifs from the Benartex Give Thanks line for this alternate version. The sashing is a plaid from the same line, and the final border is a coordinating leaf print.

As with the embroidered sentiment, orient your motifs to be right side up facing the short ends.

Easy and fast, and the pieced block in the center gives it more interest. Plus, if you use a centerpiece, your embroidery will still be visible.

Carole, again you show us another great set of ideas and patterns for fun projects. I like the Holiday Cheer Machine Embroidery Collection from Sulky.
Hi Carolyn. I love the table runner, churn dash is one of my favorite blocks. My first pieced quilt was with churn dash blocks.
As for the Sulky sale, I would opt for the Educational Books. I love to see all of the different ways that things are done.
Love the fall table runner tutorial and your fabrics are so perfect. I just want one of everything! The holiday sale item that really caught my eye was the tumbler with the saying “Sew This is Christmas” . Love it! Thanks Carole and thanks to Sulky for being such a great sponsor of this event.
This is a wonderful fall runner. And yes, it is a most wonderful time of year!
I love thé churn dash block. I’ve never done that one. Since I have no embroidery machine, I’ll make three of these blocks. I received my mystery fall box from Sulky and I love everything in it! From their website for the holidays sale I really like the colors of the 12 Wt. Cotton Petites Thread – Winter Sampler – 50 yd. Spools712-10. That’s my favorite! Thanks again to Sulky for their generous giveaway and yo you too, Carole, for this runner idea.
these are cuties, nice for gifts for friends.
Such a cute table runner – quick and easy to make. I use Sulky threads for my embroidery too, so the thread assortment sale is great!
Thanks for the great table runner idea. Table runners are one of my go-to handmade gifts especially when time to sew is limited. And the recipients seem to love them.
I saw lots of beautiful threads and I also browsed some of their holiday sale gift items. Love the White Glossy Mug – Holiday Spirit: Gifts and Bird – 15 oz. Wouldn’t it be a lovely gift for a sewing friend if it were also filled with threads, pins, etc. I have a couple friends that would like something like that!
I like the wooden ornaments. The can shaped glasses are interesting. The table runner is so pretty. I love thanksgiving too.
I love the rich fabrics in your first runner. It. Looks so nice with the embroidery you did. I love the colors of thread in that fall grouping. The Christmas Poly Sparle threads are also lovely.
Great presentation for a table runner. Churn Dash is one of my favorite quilt blocks. Thank you for sharing.
First of all, thanks for giving an alternative to machine embroidery for those of us who don’t have machines. I love the fussy cut idea. On the Sulky Website, they have 30wt Poly Sparkle thread that looks like so much fun to use.
I have an old Singer embroidery machine that I have procured an older laptop that I could use it with. I would love to start embroidering again! Any of these items would be a great addition to my collection. I love your embroidery items, you come up with the cutest sayings!
My favorite Sulky holiday item is the Stabilizer Assortment. When I get on a roll with embroidery, I go through a lot of stabilizer. Thanks for sharing your beautiful creations.
Another great project! The perfect saying too! I love Autumn projects. 🙂 I have to admit that I spent an extraordinary amount of time paging through the Sulky website. WOW; I didn’t realize how expansive it has become. I liked the Unisex T-Shirt – Holiday Quilts: Merry Christmas – Floral Cheer. Thanks for the reminder about Embroidery Designs website. I haven’t looked there in a while and quickly found the design you used. 🙂
Those are really fun runner designs, Carole! I like the churn dash block in them, and the embroidered pieces, too. I’d like to use more variegated threads in my quilting and Sulky has one called Vintage Holiday on sale at a very good price!
lovely fall blocks and turned into pretty runners – good job!
Carole-Thanks for the great pattern! I will use fussy cut blocks this year as I do not have an embroidery machine. I may hand embroider a couple of blocks to make another next year.
I loved looking at the threads on the Sulky holiday sale items on the website. The blendables(variegated) were especially beautiful. I also like the stabilizer assortment.
Thanks to Sulky for being a sponsor of this event and generously contributing today’s prize!
thank you for the pattern,I can’t wait to sew it. As for the sulky threads, OMG I am like a kid in the candy store. All the beautiful colors and especially the variegated ones. I just want to touch and admire them all. Thank you for doing for doing fortnight
winter poly sparkle 6 pk
I’ve enjoyed seeing the patterns you have shown us to date. You have some cute ideas and they are fun to see. It’s usually a ‘why didn’t I think of that’ sort of moment when they arrive but good to see.
I haven’t looked at the suggested sites as with the exchange rate as it is, it would cost me a ‘King’s Ransom’ to buy anything. So when I do look, goggle eyed, at all the lovely stuff I just dream!!

Today’s project is a great reminder for me to dust off my embroidery machine and make some fun new gifts! I love Sulky thread too! One item on their website is the Wafer 1 Lightbox by Daylight Company – 10.6″ x 14.2″. I can see myself using this lightbox in so many cool ways to make my job easier! duchick at gmail dot com
Ohhh I love those table runners. Thanks for sharing the pattern too. You are so industrious!
I like to embroider gifts for friends so the embroidery blanks appeal most to me!
Thank you, Carole. Another good pattern to try. I would really like to have one of the light boxes that are on sale.
Hard to pick which Sulky sale category is most appealing. There are some super towel bargains in the “blanks” category.
My ultimate pick is Sulky’s 30 weight poly sparkle thread. I am going to have to try this thread. I’m working on a Christmas embroidery project featuring garland and other decorations that would be spectacular in this thread.
Love your table runner! Great options and looks easy.
Enjoy the fall colors!

Unfortunately my Embroidery Machine is buried in the corner of my sewing room since doing some organizing. But I’ve just uncovered some fall fabric i didn’t remember having. This table runner should work up fast.
With Sulky thread on sale it should be a good time to stock up on holiday colors.
Fun ideas! I love that churn dash block. I buy my sister a holiday mug each year and she loves owls – loving the Owl be Home mug for her!!
Carole, those block centers are eye catching! Fall colors are my favorite even if I don’t care for the cooler temperatures that come with them. My choice from the Sulky list are the Holiday Thread Collections.

I love the table runners. 30 Wt. Cotton Thread – Traditional Christmas Thread Sampler – 500 yd. Spools733-23 is what appeals to me in the Holiday sale.
Gorgeous table runners. Thanks for sharing the pattern. I love Sulky stabilizers or my embroidery.
I don’t do machine embroidery but those wooden ornaments were cute!
I don’t have a embroidery machine, but I do love all the beautiful Christmas cotton and metallic threads.
Fabulous block and I like the Waterproof Beach Tote Digital Pattern kit.

Since I don’t have an embroidery module/machine, either of the thread sales appeals to me. I love playing with threads whether with quilting or hand embroidery.
