Stashbusters April Check In

It’s time to report our monthly progress on our fabric in and out. The idea is awareness, and no judgement when the sale table calls, an adorable print shows up in the quilt shop, or retail therapy is needed. For new readers this is easy to do, just report what you have brought in and sent out over the past month, keeping a year to date total. No, you don’t have to inventory your stash, just keep track of what comes in and what goes out each month. There is only one rule, report as ‘out’ only what is completely finished, quilted and bound. For small items like purses or totes, they have to be finished and ready for use or gifting. The challenge is to complete things for gifts, or to use, and wrap up the projects in progress, not to create more UFOs.

I did so good this month with fabric in! I resisted the freebie table at guild and at retreat, and didn’t buy anything at the store closing sale at JoAnns. I received only four fat quarters in a door prize, and immediately gave those away, so it was net zero.

For fabric out, I managed to sell the blue rose print, and the blue toile print on the left in this photo. At six yards each, that is 12 yards out.

The cute canning theme apron counts as 1-1/2 yards out.

The little hot pads count as 3/4 yard out.

The bee theme table runner was finished, sold and shipped. 1-1/2 yards out.

I made four of these bowl cozies with a fall theme. Total out counting 1/2 yard.

I finished these small projects for sale, plus two more already sold. Total fabric out 1-1/2 yards.

Oh, and I almost forgot this one, a cozy with the apple orchard print. Total out 1/4 yard. This is the print that I need to find some apple buttons for.

After showing this print on the blog, I sold and shipped one yard to a reader.

Lastly, I can count out my Worldwide Quilting Day entry. Total out 1-1/4 yards for base, backing, and dimensional applique.

So, here are my totals –
March Fabric IN = + 0 yards
March Fabric OUT = – 20-1/2 yards
March Net Total = -20-1/2 yards
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = + 21-1/2 yards
Woohoo, I made up almost half of my fabric in from last month!!

So we can all make progress with projects, the next Virtual Retreat has been postponed, and is now scheduled for Thursday, April 24, starting at 9:30 am Eastern Time to about 3:00 pm. It’s a fun way to spend a day! You will be sewing in your own sewing space, yet have all the benefits of show and tell, advice on projects, and general chat time with friends old and new, from all over the country. Last time we had five states represented! You can work on whatever you like – sew, stamp, embroider, organize your sewing room, press fabric and do laundry, or just come to chat. Also, you do not need to commit to the whole day, come and go as you can. Come for a little while, or all day, pop in and out as your schedule allows! Click HERE to register. Just $5.

Your Turn! Copy and past this form into your comment and fill in your totals. Indicate on the totals if the number is in (+) or out (-). If you need a reminder where you were last month, click on Stashbusters March and scroll down to your comment.

I have a number of UFOs that only need binding to be finished. So in March I got TWO queen quilts bound – one is on my bed! Hopefully one or two more will be done in April.

The rest of the month was prepping a couple of Projects and testing 2 patterns for a designer- 6 yards in & 6 yards out to make two flimsies.

How’d you do this month? I had a fabulous productive March!

    March Fabric IN = +16
    March Fabric OUT = –91.25
    March Net Total = -75.25
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = -126.25

I had a bit of head start as I received 7 partially completed tops of which only 3 required assembly. I count only the fabric I add to the finish, not the received. The weather here is cold/snow/rain in March with no hope of gardening so quilting quarters it has been! Then I realized I needed 5 baby quilts before April 5 so those happened start to finish. AND, our SIHP is building beds like crazy so I kept on going! Soooo I have 16 finishes for March 🙂 And 26 for the year with 3 twins in the binding pile.

    Cheers to quilts 🙂

Congratulation on your stash busting progress, Carole. I am swinging back and forth each month. An estate sale in March added more fabric to my stash although 4 plus yards caught my husband’s eyes and were quietly hidden in my choices. So, here goes for March:

    March Fabric In: 20.75 yds.;

    March Fabric Out: 29.4 yds;

    March Net Total: – 8.65 yds;

    Y-T-D Total: -31.05 yds.

    March Fabric OUT = –11.25
    March Net Total = -8.0

I hope to get another finished quilt this month to really knock more fabric out of the stash.

Wow! Great month Carole. You are on a roll. I finished two big projects that helped a lot. Planning to keep up my momentum through the summer.

    March Fabric OUT = – 12.0 yards
    March Net Total = – 10.75 yards

I managed to get 2 twin & 1 large lap size quilts completed & donated. For the month I sent out more than I took in. While I like making the block-a-day blocks I’m working on, it’s really not a good use of my time having to wait a year to get a finished quilt to donate. I’m going to bail on that project as soon as I have enough. I had to buy a piece of fabric to complete the backing for the flimsy I’m going to start quilting tomorrow. I just completed my 1st finish for April – a 16″ square project bag with a see-through vinyl front. I didn’t enjoy working on it – won’t be making any more of them!

Well, with a smile on my face, I can say I had a good month. The longarm and I are finally on pretty good terms, depending on the day. I got 2 tops quilted and bound in March and another fleece blanket made for my parent’s dog, Marley. Still doing great on the “no buy year”!!

I have to tear down my sewing room at the end of April…We’re replacing the windows in the house. So, my goal is to get the 4 tops hanging on my old midarm frame quilted. I don’t have anyplace to put them once it’s gone, so they need to get done. 1 is quilted…took it off the frame yesterday and loaded number 2. I don’t know if I’ll get them bound, but I enjoy that part, so I don’t mind if it takes a few weeks to get that completed. With all that said, we’re also looking forward to a visit from our youngest son and his wife this month. It’s been 15 years since we’ve seen him..can’t wait!!!

    So, totals for this month…

    March Fabric IN = + 0
    March Fabric OUT = – 19.25 yds
    March Net Total = – 19.25 yds
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) – 20.5 yds

Wow, Carole. You are on a roll sending things out!

i managed not to buy anything this month so that helped.

    March In 0

    March Out -3 3/4

Net for March Out 3 3/4

    Net for 2025 IN 9

  10. You really decreased your stash Carole! I didn’t have a very productive month, sewing wise. I finished another
Roman shade, and did a muslin copy of a pair of RTW shorts. That was the bulk of my sewing, with just a few other bits.

    March In 0 yards
    March Out 2.6 yards
    March Net Total -2.6 yards
    Year to Date -7.7 yards

No activity this month. I’ve been sidelined by thumb surgery

Did something anyway, but needed yardage of black. Made 3 toppers of 3-yd quilts for Christmas gifts so plenty of time to sandwich and quilt.

  13. March Fabric IN = +3
    March Fabric OUT = –7.75
    March Net Total = -4.75
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = 6.25

The good news is that I am down a little and while there are planned purchases for quilts in line this month, it should still be going in the right direction!

Working toward tipping the scales to much more going out of my stash than coming. One quilt already finished for April with 4 ready to quilt! Yeah!

I’ve been travelling, and didn’t get to my computer to comment until now. Carole, you had a very productive month! Wish I could say the same, but while on vacation in Hawaii, some of the beautiful fabric there begged to come home with me.

March was busy so I didn’t finish any quilting projects. I bought backing for a quilt I’ll be starting soon. And I gave in to temptation and took a class from a favorite instructor (Glenda Wilder). For that I already had half the fabric for the top, so I bought the rest of the top and binding. Looking forward to a few finishes this month to offset what I bought last month.

    March Fabric IN = +4.4
