Hurricane Quilts and MINIs Club Drive

It was a rainy day last week when we planned to make a trip out to Lake Lure to deliver quilts, and preview the route we were planning for a car club drive. All the quilts that have been collected since the last delivery were in this shipment, including these lovelies plus more than a dozen more.

My Sweet Babboo filled the car for the drive, putting quilts and bags of other donation things in the back seat. First stop was the humane society thrift store to drop off a couple of bags of items culled from around the house.

Two large boxes in the back were full of quilts.

Our plan was to have lunch at the Lake House, and we gave every employee on the staff there that day a quilt. It is wonderful to put the quilts right into the hands of the people affected by the hurricane, just to let them know they are not forgotten. In the photo, Keila D on the left, and Destiny M on the right were gracious enough to be photographed with the quilts. They put them inside to distribute to the other employees after the lunch service. Keila picked hers out right away.

The view from the restaurant is usually beautiful, but the mud in the lake is disheartening. It really is this icky green color. Although almost all of the floating surface debris has been removed, news reports say that it still needs dredging of mud and silt, and the removal of debris under the surface. It is not likely that the lake will reopen for recreation this year.

But the restaurant is open and still serving delicious food. We stayed for lunch with My Sweet Babboo ordering a chicken sandwich…

with a side Caesar salad.

I had a mixed greens salad with fried chicken and huge bits of smoky bacon. Yum!!

After lunch, we met Sarah and transferred the two big boxes to her car. She’ll take them to two churches serving Bat Cave residents to distribute. I made sure she had kept one for herself and she had.

Saturday was a rainy mess, but we go in our MINIs rain or shine. We met in the parking lot of a local grocery store. The coffee color MINI with the Appalachian Mountain MINIs door magnets is ours. We had our drivers meeting on the radios rather than get out of the cars.

By the time we were starting out, it had become just a drizzle. Overcast, sure, but not pouring rain. We had 12 cars go along for the ride, and the weather steadily improved over the route and during lunch.

It was my turn to drive, and we were leading the group. Because of the rain, we didn’t even attempt to get photos in the mirror or out the back during the run. But my friend Mary Lou got a great one of a few of the cars going through the covered bridge.

Having fun with friends, helping our neighbors, and enjoying a good meal is a wonderful way to spend a Saturday. I had a fish sandwich this time with one of those side salads. Yum! All in all a great day in spite of the rain.

This week I can get more sewing done, and I hope our guild meeting doesn’t get canceled for snow, but I am not optimistic. I have designed a quick and easy foot pedal pad, and I’ll be trying it out this week to see if it works like I hope it will. If it does, it will be one of the things I make for the quilt shop at the show. Time will tell.

What are your plans for this week?

Good Morning, I just wanted to drop you a line and let you know how much I love reading your e-mails and what you are up to. I do have a question, you say you give your squirrel a sandwich, would you be so kind as to share how you make the sandwich? I have about 2-3 squirrels that I am feeding during the winter and I am finding my supplies are getting pretty low.

    Thanks, Barb

    1. Hi Barb,
I put chunky peanut butter on half of a slice whole grain bread, top with the other half of the bread, then cut the sandwich into 8 pieces. I keep them in a sealed container on the counter. They last several days although the peanut butter does get a bit dry after a few. The squirrels will still eat them.

  2. I know all were happy to receive the quilts. It seems a fun ride in spite of the rain. We have beautiful sunshine today which is wonderful to see!

The covered bridge shot!!!! It’s so nice to see the quilt giving continue. After an initial surge of contributions when there’s a disaster, interest seems to wane whereas the need remains. Thanks for keeping rebuilding efforts in the forefront.

  4. It sounds like a wonderful weekend in every way — the road trip to deliver the quilts looks both fun and very emotionally satisfying. And I know you always have fun with the mini gang! Well done, my friend!

So glad you were able to distribute more quilts! I am sorry the weather was not cooperative for your Mini drive, but it looks as though you all made the best of it. I am sewing and writing posts this week….avoiding the cold for a few more days. Thursday promises to be a bit warmer…finally…30s in sight for a few days and we can begin the thaw. We had ice with the last two storms which makes things treacherous.

That’s wonderful that you were able to give everyone that works at the restaurant a quilt! I bet they never expected that. Your mini drive sounds fun, in spite of the weather. Love the photo of the cars going through the covered bridge! Cold and snowy here – it is definitely the middle of winter.

    Carole,

Sounds like you made lemonade out of lemons for your mini drive in the rain! I’m curious about your radio meeting. Does your group have CB radios?

Thanks for distributing the quilts to those affected by the hurricane! Warms my heart to see that!

We’re having a multiday snow, ice and wind event. Started over the weekend and won’t let up until Wednesday. Stores and even the local TV station not fully manned as people can’t get to work. Super time for a sew day!

    1. No, they are not CB radios, everyone has hand-held two way radios. We ask everyone to have one so we can communicate during the drive to warn of hazards, alert the group for upcoming turns, and anything else. Members can communicate to the leaders to let us know if they are leaving the group so others don’t follow them (i.e. needed gas or something), as well as letting us know if the back half of the group are lagging far behind because of a slow muggle car or a farm tractor. Then the sweep, the last car in line, lets the leaders know when everyone has made a turn, are all back together after a lag, and other information like getting around a hazard along the way.

  8. What a lovely time you had, delivering quilts to those in need, lunch out, and having a drive with your Mini owner friends. Who cares about the rain, the weather wasnt bad enough to stop your outing.

Glad to see that the weather didn’t deter the intrepid Mini group from enjoying their day out. On seeing the state of the lake it’s a grim reminder of the terrible storm and you still receiving lovely quilts to take to the people.

Please tell me, what is a ‘foot pedal pad’? I’ve not heard of this I don’t think 😀

    Mary :))

    1. Thanks, we still have a lot of people who would be happy to have a quilt to help them feel like they have not been forgotten.

A foot pedal pad is a non-slip mat that goes under the foot control on your sewing machine to keep it from sliding around on slippery floors like linoleum.
