Autumn Jubilee Mason Jar Wraps

Our first embroidery project of the event is today, but you can still sew along if you do not have an embroidery machine. Fussy cut motifs or hand embroidered designs will work just as well. This project is made to fit a large 3-cup (or 24 oz), wide mouth Mason Jar.

Remember the four flying geese left over from our quilt along blocks? Here’s where we use them. If you are not doing the quilt along, I’ll give you the instruction on how to make four for the project.

First, find a small embroidery about 3-1/2-inches square from your available motifs, and stitch it out. My Farmer’s Market round motif came from Juju’s Designs.

When you have it stitched, using square ruler, cut the background to 4-1/2-inches square.

Next, make four flying geese using the No Waste Flying Geese method (or use the leftovers from the quilt along). Cut one large 5-3/4-inch scrappy square and four 3-3/8-inch background squares. Place the flying geese on either side of the main motif pointing toward the center.

Sew together. Place two 3-inch pieces of 1/4-inch elastic on one end.

Layer with a piece of batting and backing (4-1/2-inches x 12-1/2-inches), placing backing right sides together with the right side of pieced top. Stitch around the edge, leaving an opening for turning.

Turn right side out, and topstitch about 1/8-inch in from the edge, enclosing the opening. Stitch in the ditch of the flying geese if desired.

Determine where to place two buttons to align with the elastic loops. Sew the buttons onto the wrapper.

The wrapper goes around the Mason jar, with the elastic loops going over the buttons. The elastic helps keep the wrapper snug on the jar.

These would make wonderful additions to your jar gifts from your canning endeavors, or the mixes we’ll do later in the month. This one would be fun for a gift of marinara sauce or canned tomatoes.

But you don’t need to be a canning cook to have some fun with these. Make a holiday greeting and put one around one of the large jar candles. Happy Thanksgiving to my Canadian readers today!

Don’t use candles? Put the wrapper on a large empty mason jar and add a battery operated ‘candle’.

Have fun!!

Aren’t these cute?! I love the idea to make the wraps for a jar candle if you don’t have any Mason jars. These will make great gifts, too! On the Sulky site, I’m interested in the 12 Wt. Cotton Petites thread for cross-stitching. That would be fun to try using!

As for products from Sulky. Oh my goodness, I watch Ellen March quite often and love everything! I’ve just recently purchased the Witch is In/ the Witch is out thread pallette and had so much fun with it! I did not use the Filane thread and looking forward to the spool I got in the pallette. Another thing I would like to try is the Fall Botanicals stitch outs and their Sewing Supply Roll up that can be found at their blog.
