Sunday Chat – Snowing and Sewing

It has been three years since we’ve seen snow, and of course when it finally came it ruined some fun plans. The overnight house party we were going to do was canceled as the roads were just not safe with ice under the snow. Ah, well, My Sweet Babboo doesn’t mind having to eat the two pints of blueberries I had purchased for blueberry pancakes for breakfast. He’ll get blueberry waffles this morning, and some muffins for later. The champagne for the planned mimosas will hold until we reschedule.

Knowing the weather was coming, My Sweet Babboo filled the bird feeder and put out a new suet cake. It was quickly found by the bluebirds and a couple of Carolina wrens.

Then the snow started falling on Friday. By Friday afternoon, the suet cake was more than half gone, as every neighborhood bird was trying to get its share of the extra calories to stay warm. The woodpecker was so intent on stuffing its beak, that it didn’t mind the wren sharing the bounty.

Towhees tend to be ground feeders. This female had her feathers fluffed out as protection from the cold.

Two titmouses and a wren get a meal while the snow fell.

A hairy woodpecker came back for more.

A flock of juncos were searching the ground for seeds dropped from the feeder.

Saturday just before dawn, the early light was grey-blue on the clouds and the snow. The next mountains behind the ones in shadow have snow on the peaks.

The juncos were back for an early breakfast. There were about a dozen of them, but they flit around so fast that it is hard to get more than a few in one shot.

As the sky grew lighter, the winter wonderland emerged. We got about 2 inches, not really a lot, but enough to keep us home.

So, on Friday, while the snow fell, I got to work on sewing and quilting the base for my challenge quilt. I made the decision not to use a ruler and spend three days quilting it. This isn’t going into any kind of judging, it is just for fun, so I just did it free motion. This is all I can show you until the show in March. But I have quite a bit of work left with the appliques and finishing.

As I headed down to the sewing room on Saturday, the view out the windows was lovely. That’s my barn quilt that My Sweet Babboo made for me out of tiles. It is my Tango block in scrappy colors.

I took the awful applique off the green sweatshirt, which went fairly fast. I have a square pack and a strip pack of Japanese prints that I want to look at for a new embellishment. I don’t know what prints are in these precut packs, so I have no idea how I will use them. I’d like to do something with collage, but it remains to be seen if that will work for this project.

I have the next Virtual Retreat set up. It will be Friday, February 7 and the payment button is now active. Virtual Retreat is just $5, click HERE to see more information and how to register. Can you join us?

What are you working on this week? Did you get snow?

I love seeing the birds feast and what you’re up to. We still had about 6″ of snow with a layer ice in between from Blair when Cora hit and added 4.more inches of snow. The ice and cold temperatures this week has not allowed for any thawing. We finally got our parking pad scraped on Wed, but our streets are flat and the city does not scrape or salt, just the main roads and hills. So we still have ice and snow pack on the road! Hoping for warmer temps soon to melt this. Have a good week.

  2. Blueberry waffles sound delicious on this cold morning! We have been bird watching this past week, it is rather entertaining when you are stuck inside for a day or two. I love the barn quilt. Enjoy your day, Carole!

  3. What a bummer to have to cancel your house party. Slippery roads are no joke. We had snow Monday last week, and it is blowing across the roads at night. Hopefully, we will warm up enough today to start melting those top layers and cutting down the blowing snow. I love the gold in the blocks you showed. The birds know how to find you for sure!

  4. That towhee is awfully cute! My birds have been chawing it down, too — I think I’m spending more in birdseed for one season than I do for Lizzie in two years! Loving your golden quilt! Stay cozy!

    1. I’m sure the birds were thankful for the extra calories. I’m looking forward to the Zoom Retreat!

We got 8″ of snow last Monday but only a little more than an inch on Friday night.

I’m working on finishing several projects while waiting for a package that is taking its time getting here. Then I’ll be testing two new patterns.

At least the sun is shining this morning!

I had got ready for the birds too – suet cakes were put out and two feeders filled, the mesh bag of thistle seed was out in case the finches arrived. All feeders have been busy now since Wednesday and I had to refill – they are greedy little things.

Your snow is scenic and cozy from inside the house, but so sorry it cancelled your fun plans! We enjoy seeing the birds in this kind of weather, too – they’re very busy. We’ve had juncos, too – such pretty birds! Your challenge project looks really neat – looking forward to seeing the reveal!

Sorry your house party got scuppered by the weather but the birds know where to go for the best food! The Blueberries will be lovely for breakfast pancakes etc but they also are quite happy waiting in the fridge for the ideas to hit for how to use them. Such a good fruit to get left with.

Just the best weather to cosy up in the sewing room or by the fire with a good book!

    Carole,

Parts of our county got 3, 4 or 5 feet of snow last week. You know you are in for it when the weather forecasters start talking snow accumulation in feet rather than inches. We got lucky when most of the lake effect snow bands went around us. We only got about a foot of snow.

The good news is that when it snows, we stay home and sew!

That picture of the bluebird on the feeder is sensational!

I’m disappointed that I won’t be able to attend your next retreat in February. I will be out of town in a place with poor internet.

    Stay safe and warm!

  9. So sorry your party was cancelled. We got maybe an inch here in central AL. Of course, we usually have ice underneath and this was no exception. The kiddos were out of school and enjoyed themselves playing in what we got. I hear week after next we are in for another bout of super cold and possibly more??? Time will tell. It was definitely a great time for staying in and sewing! Have a great week.

  11. Sorry your party was cancelled. I don’t like snow and ice – and have gotten more chicken as time goes on. I love that the birds were well taken care of during the storms, and fun to see the different ones that winter in the south from those we see up north!
