Stashbusters October

Gather up your fabric in and out totals, as it is time to report your progress. For new readers, this is easy to do, just report what you have brought in and sent out over the past month, keeping a year to date total. No, you do not have to take inventory of your stash. There is only one rule, report as ‘out’ only what is completely finished, quilted and bound. For small items like purses or totes, they have to be finished and ready for use or gifting. The challenge is to finish projects, have them in use, ready to give as a gift, or out the door, not to create new UFOs for the closet. Fabric out can also be given away, or donated somewhere. Remember, it is fine to buy fabric now and then. This challenge just to keep us mindful to get what we need, but not go overboard.

I couldn’t resist these fabrics on the guild freebie table in September. I got 2-1/2 yards of the lovely rose print which will become pajama bottoms, and a yard of the brocade which is planned to be a sleeveless shell. Total 3-1/2 yards in that day.

I got three fat quarters for working the Mountain State Fair quilt pick up, so I chose all black prints. Total in = 3/4 yard.

Some of that black went right back out again with Vicki’s Vultures Rock wall hanging. Total out = 3/4 yard.

Then, I made this quick table topper for fall with the fabulous Benartex fabric line called Harvest Festival that we used for last year’s Autumn Jubilee. My local quilt shop still has it in stock now, maybe yours does too. Total out =- 1/2 yard.

When I found out that our local guild was working with local churches to distribute quilts to people who lost homes, or were in shelters, I pulled out the angel panel and put two borders on it. I chose light fabrics to brighten up the panel. Then I quilted it with a swirly pantograph, and bound it in the same fabric as the backing by machine. A label was sewn on the back saying it is from the guild, and it is ready to go. The sentiment is really nice for this purpose. Fabric out = 3 yards.

So, here are my totals for the month of September, up to this week of October.

September Fabric IN = +4-1/4 yards
September Fabric OUT = – 4-1/4 yards (LOL, exactly the same amount as ‘in’!!)
September Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = 0 yards
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = -1-1/4-yard “out”

WordPress prevents commenting, but it can’t stop me from following! Holding my own on Stashbusting. Only one twin size went out the door, but no fabric came in. In addition to the fabric stash, I’m also knitting up an afghan using all the odds & ends of yarn – they filled a laundry basket. This project will never leave me, the yarns are too variable for easy laundering & therefore not good for a gift. But useful in the car over winter.

  2. I managed to use up some fabric that has been on a bolt on the shelf for at least 8 years. Vintage credit? So 4 yards out on a charity quilt back & binding. LOL. I’m so terrible about keeping track. I cashed in my “fat quarter coupon” at the September guild meeting and came home with 10 Fat Quaters, so that is 2.5 yards in for September.

    Fabric in 2.5 yards

    Fabric out 4 yards

That’s as complicated as I can get. Now don’t get me started on October and all that flannel I got at JoAnn’s for the Christmas pajamas! 😉

      1. The annual Christmas pajama pants for the growing grands. JoAnn’s had the cuddle flannel for $3.99/yard, then the next week $2.99 yard. I had 9 yards arrive yesterday, and it is already prewashed, dried and folded. This weekend is “measure the kids”. I’ve learned to buy 1″ elastic on a big roll too! Starting early this year so I don’t feel rushed!

September was a fun month for me with quilt shows and shop hops fabric just naturally followed me home. I’m organizing to go on a retreat this month so am planning on using some of it. So maybe this month I’ll get in the black.

This was the last month of the All Illinois Shop Hop so my totals reflect that — UGH! Plus we had company for two of the four weeks of September and then we left for a week to attend my niece’s wedding. So much fun but not much time for sewing but I did manage to finish those 6 Christmas placemats from long ago!

Sept was a slow sewing month for me. Four Christmas mug rugs with tiny pieces using numb fingers. It’s tough getting old. lol

Carole, I’m glad that you weathered the storm as well as you did, but it must have still been difficult. Sounds like you have good neighbors, and you all got through it together.

I went to my guild’s retreat in September, a “sleep-at-home” style retreat. It was a lot of fun, and I started a new project, baby quilt for a friend’s grandchild. I made good progress, but was disappointed to find that what I thought would be an easy, quick pattern isn’t as quick as I thought it would be, so it will still be a while before the quilt is finished. The good news is that I resisted any of the fabric or pretty kits offered on the sale table.

  7. Good morning! My short term memory isn’t working and I fell behind making my stash notes in September. I know I’ve been working to finish several UFOs & have been pulling fabric for backings & bindings which will be counted soon. I also needed to buy some fabric to go with the UFO finishes. I’ve started some Christmas projects, too.

I don’t even want to report my month! I. Made a promise to myself that this was the last fabric purchase for the year! But, this time of year, I get in the buying mood. 2 purchases made it over the threshold, and we won’t even mention what I will have to report for October…

But good news…the longarm is running, so now I have to get in there and learn how to use it. My “tops to quilt” are now at 12. There will be no more tops made this year (says my logical self). I will continue to work on my son’s bowtie quilt, but nothing else. The rest of my precuts will move to my”UFO” challenge for next year. This fall and early winter will be used for quilting tops and making some much needed garments. I’m not crazy about doing either one, so I’m hoping this won’t kick off my depression with projects I don’t really enjoy and with the gloomy weather. This resolve may only last a couple of weeks, and I may be off to making tops again!

    Anyway, here’s my month….

    September Fabric IN = +7.5
    September Fabric OUT = –0
    September Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = In +7.5
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = Out 12.75

  9. September was a pretty good month; I was focused on using up a pile of scraps, and made four bowl cozies for a gift, 6 potholders, and new cover for the studio piano bench, finished the wedding quilt, 3 student pillowcases and started quilting my Alaska quilt. Getting rid of all those scraps made me feel very virtuous! I have one table topper left to quilt, and a very tiny pile of scraps that will eventually get used.

    September In: 0 yards
    September Out: 10.6 yards
    September Net Total: -10.6 yards

  10. Hi Carole, I’m glad to see you’re back and moving forward again. I look forward to seeing what you have planned! I had a good month..back to crafting and sewing again. My totals:

September Fabric IN = +1.5September Fabric OUT = –12.75September Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = -11.25Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = -65.50

And, I’ll have a good report for October, too. I’m vending at a Purge & Splurge Sale hosted at a local fabric shop/sewing retreat center. I’m hoping to come home with more empty bags that full ones!

September was a bit slow as we traveled for 10 days, but I had a few early finishes and cleared out some old scraps to guild members who will use them.

A friend had a “clean out” and because I make mostly charity quilts, she gave me “several” plastic bins. Let’s let it go at that. LOTS.

  16. It was a pretty good month for me, even with fabric in for the project. I used 90% of it, so that was good. Hoping for an even more productive October!

    Fabric Purchased September: +9.5 yards
    Fabric Used September: -16.5 yards
    YTD Fabric Purchased: +38.5 yards
    YTD Fabric Used: +101.5 yards

September Fabric IN = +22.5 yards
    September Fabric OUT = – 42.5 yards
    September Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = -20 yards
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = +383 yards

Fabric in: I bought 10 bolts of wide backings this year as I seriously dislike piecing quilt backs AND I have already finished 38 quilts this year using 2 full bolts plus another 4 twin cuts. Also, I’ve reached the point of not having large enough pieces for borders so I’ve had to start buying and when I do, I will generally buy 3yards so I can finish several.

    Cheers to quilting!

I have been working very hard to get some pillowcases finished for my friends’ students. This month I finished 60 pillowcases. I figure that is 60 yards of fabric that is going out the door! I was so good, I only bought one yard of solid fabric for a few cuffs for the pillow cases–so that fabric is also going out the door.

I had a fairly productive time since I last posted. That’s because I am still purging an over abundant supply. Linus gets fabric used faster than I do! Also gave them a whole bunch of kits for their birthday silent auction this month. 2 small quilts out the door, dog bandanas sent to my friend for her grooming shop plus donation fabric.

    Sept Out = -15.5
