Stashbusters August Check In

It is the first Friday of the month, time for our Stashbusters check in. How’d you do sewing in July? Gather up your fabric in and out totals, as it is time to report your progress. We are seven months in on this year, and I hope you are trending toward more fabric out by now. If not, there are still five months left in the year to sew. Remember, it is fine to buy fabric now and then. This challenge just to keep us mindful to get what we need, but not go overboard.

Once again I was tempted by the freebie table at guild. This is just sometimes a challenge to resist, and it didn’t help that another member kept showing me things (I’m looking at you, Patti!!). But I really did get some good stuff. I came home with these fabulous threads in big cones, and I have no idea what I’ll do with them. Add to that some covered button blanks, two spools of ribbon and a new cutting mat! Fabric included a couple of panels, a bit of floral yardage, and 5 yards of plaid corduroy (thinking of a winter skirt). Total in from the guild meeting =8-1/2 yards.

One of the panels might make a nice wall hanging for Safelight. I’m thinking perhaps some blocks on both sides. I just thought the sentiment was perfect.

But I needed completed projects out now! So, since our pillowcase sew day was canceled, I got out some of the kits I had cut and got to work. A day later I had ten done.

I really didn’t expect to be sewing all these myself, or I might not have cut so many. But anyway a few days later, I had time to do 5 more. So, 15 total pillowcases = 15-3/4 yards out. I still have 25 more cut out, so my total next month should be good.

Completions of the Quick Table Topper and the potholders equal a total of one yard for both project tops, backs and bindings, and the pockets on the potholders.

I had to buy one yard of yellow fabric while I was at retreat to get farther along on a project. I’ll show you that later, but I’ll count it in now. So, here is where I stand this month.
July Fabric IN = + 9-1/2 yards
July Fabric OUT = – 16-3/4 yards
July Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = -7-1/4 yards
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = +15 yards “in”

  1. Nothing in or out for July. I’ve lost track for the year. Because I work mostly with scraps, it takes too much math to figure it out. HAHAHA , or I am just lazy! I did make a little wall hanging so I guess the FQ I used for the back must count for something! LOL. Been working on 60 degree triangle string blocks for the last week or 2 and they have been fun. Have a great week with those projects.

    1. Everything counts!

Here is the easy way to calculate fabric out when using scraps. Measure your quilt width and length to get the total square inches of one side. If you have a finished quilt that measures 60 x 72, that equals 4320 square inches. Divide that number by 1440 (number in one yard) and you get 3, so I would count out 3 yards. Be sure to count out the same for the backing, and add a bit for binding. It is a rough estimate but good enough for this challenge.

For donated scraps, I weigh my scrap bags and (now that I have more data on this) count three yards out for each pound of scraps.

our charity quilt day helped with my “out”. I just need to stop starting new things and focus on a few things that need only borders and a back to get moved on along.😀 I did start a Halloween quilt using a Villa Rosa Pattern (Hilltop). It is going together quickly and I should actually be able to use it this year which is exciting.

i also need to go through my fabric to see what there is that I have lost the love for and move it out to be taken from the Guild Table by someone who might have more interest in it/use for it.

The Retreat Bingo sounds like a lot of fun and I liked the idea about the bowl cozies.

Great projects ! At our church, we’ve been making pillowcases too. The kid style go to Child Protection Services. They use them as bags for belongings when moving children out of unsafe situations then the child can keep it for their pillow.
We have 5 sewing machines, 1 serger and a beautiful room devoted to quilting. Our numbers have increased from 8 to 21 and we are very crowded so we set up a folding work table in the hallway every week to make quilt backs. We are hoping for an expansion but it’s not looking promising.

What a terrific panel for Safelight! Re Stashbusters -well, it’s more like I got busted in July. Slow progress. A twin size hand quilted scrap buster is ready for binding, but not finished so it can’t be counted. A quilt I’m repairing is slow work & doesn’t need much from the stash. I did get some patriotic things completed but they were small. The biggest hindrance was a gift certificate, lots of fabric came in compared to little going out. On the plus side, here’s never enough background fabric in the stash so that’s all I bought. Hope to get back on the productive wagon soon.

YAY! I went the right direction. I’m nervous for August and September though. It’s All IL Shop Hop months. Planning on visiting a lot of great quilt shops.

Doesn’t look like I did much sewing this month but I have been working on an on-line mystery quilt along and finished the top. It was quite complicated and I’m glad to have that part finished. I’m also working on two BOM projects and have been keeping up with them. So busy but only two finishes.

A much better month. Shop Hopping saw a fair amount come in, but lots of finishes that have been hanging around really helped with the out totals.

That panel will be perfect for Safelight. I had a good month, mostly because more went out the door to Linus. Yardage plus a lot of quilt kits that I will never get made. And trust me I probably still have more here that will never get made. Now I’m working on one from 2009! I did get a queen size quilt totally finished and ready to use.

  10. After a very heavy month of quilting in June, I took it easy in July, working on several different smaller projects. I do have several WIPs that will finish in August, so my August out numbers will look pretty good. A quilt shop I frequent had a very good inventory reduction closeout sale where all fabric was $4 per yard. I picked up 16 yards of various prints to use as quilt backs and 1 more yard for an upcoming project. But…Yay! The big finishes of the past couple months have still kept me ahead in the fabric out totals. Here’s my report for July:

    July Fabric IN = +17
    July Fabric OUT = – 1.5
    July Net Total ( + In, or – Out) = +15.50
Year to Date (net total for the year, + In, or – Out) = -11

Spent the rest of my year’s fabric budget this month. Found a neutral on sale that I liked, so bought 5 yards to use as a background. I often have patterns that need one, but I don’t ever have a consistent background with enough quantity. Also had another order for a fabric line that I wanted to use for my own bed quilt. It was on sale, so I bought enough to finish the quilt, make a bed skirt, and pillow shams…16 yds! This should give me enough to do for then rest of the year. Can’t wait to actually have some OUT numbers! Supposedly I have parts coming in this month for both my machines that I use to quilt. I have 10 tops in waiting….

Probably wouldn’t have been worth the cost of postage – but you have a band of “sisters” out here to help. One year the quilter’s group got together in the foyer of the library (where everyone had to step on or around us – nothing subtle about us!) and we sewed the pillow cases. Got a couple new members to our group that way too! That Safelight panel is really nice – but hard to match those colors!

    IN: Zero Yeah

OUT: 7 also YEAH for me!

    Thanks, j

I love finding fabric that I think I should have. lol

  15. I’ve not accomplished a lot I can count for July. Just 3 Pillowcases to go with quilts and 3 Travel Pillowcases. Plus a few sample small projects that looked cute. I did add binding to a throw that had been waiting to be finished. I wasn’t sure if I should just count the binding or the whole quilt. So I counted it all! Lol! I did a lot of cutting for other pillowcases & some zipper pouches to be sewn in August as well as a few Safelight sets waiting to be assembled.

But the biggest July project was getting 2 flimsies ready for the longarmer to quilt for me. I had to add a couple of borders to a 2014 queen top I had pieced. Then pieced the backing. I also made the backing for a twin I pieced in 2007. It was my first (& only) hand pieced top. I finally concluded I’d probably never hand quilt it & it’s better to just get it done!

Also, I made a 3-yard quilt (throw size) which took me 2 days & pieced the back. So, when these 3 quilts return from the longarmer & I get the binding on them, I will be able to count a lot of fabric out!

That panel is so perfect for Safelight! I just bought some encouraging stampers at a church rummage sale ..so will be sending some cards to you !

Not to good on the fabric stash 🤣 Granddaughter and I made some pillowcases to include with quilts of valor ..but also over shopped some great fabric clearance sales ! I tell myself I’ll NEED that fabric after she moves out to college in two weeks ! Will keep me busy !

  18. Well, I am pleased to have gone down, in spite of needing some fabric for the pillows I was making and some generic backs or borders. Phew!

    July fabric IN: +12 yards
    July fabric OUT: -15.5 yards

Well, even though I went to Virginia Beach, VA for a family reunion for a week, I was very productive. Quilt #51 this year was scrappy hexies (a UFO), #52 Fat Quarter Mix #53 was a UFO Saturday Sampler made with 30’s fabric, #54 BQ pattern with lily fabric and orange and black, #55 BQ with the same lily fabric but done with yellow and green. #56 is Ruby star picnic done with dots and circles (used up a lot of charm squares) #57 was a car quilt with Route 66, #58 was a ZigZag quilt done with jelly rolls of blue with red insert. So 8 quilts again this month, not too bad. Quilts of Valor is happy with my contributions. One of them already got awarded!

I love that panel for a Safelight wall hanging, I agree, it is absolutely perfect! You knocked out a BUNCH of pillowcases, well done. I did finally finish the two base layers for DH, will see about doing some more this month. I also finished the borders on my Alaska quilt, just need to decide what to do about batting. I watched some videos to help me get some ideas, and I think my goal for this month will be to get it sandwiched and the stitch In the ditch completed. I am still cleaning up scraps; so will have some pot holders and several pillow cases this month. I have quilt kitted, and a pair of RTW shorts I’d like to copy, so I should have plenty to keep me occupied!

I’m so late posting my Stashbuster totals for July because I was on a hiking trip with friends. Earlier in the month, I was on another trip to visit friends and attend the amazing outdoor quilt show in Sisters, OR. Of course, there are some wonderful quilt shops in the area, too. I have several quilts in progress, but didn’t finish anything this month. My big speedbump is the actual quilting.

I just found your message for this month in my “Junk” folder. 😦

My totals are for June & July combined…..I was busy and forgot to post last month.

    June/July In = 9 yd

    Out = 12.5 yd

    Two month total = – 3.5

    YTD = + 13.5

…..just need to finish the twin-size charity quilt I have underway. 🙂

  25. Well, August was a unique month. My husband was hospitalized and subsequently passed away. But I did do 8 quilts! #59 was Cake Mix was a scrappy patriotic; #60 Butterfly Patch Scrap HST and squares, #61 was fat quarter Fireball from Revelation quilts, done in black and batik; #62 Kings Crown in patriotic; #63 another Cake Mix (since I made two many in one direction) more scrappy patriotic; #64 Gold Marbled squares; #65 Stax in patriotic. So, 8 quilts and backs is 80 yards used. No new fabric! YTD total 650 yards used (can you see the dent in my stash, yet?)
