I hope you are enjoying the Mason Jar inspired quilt along, with fabrics from Benartex’s Harvest Festival line. Today we are going to talk about the finishing, with some ideas for labeling. When we left off, the quilting was done and it was ready for binding.

I thought the plaid in the brown and rust tones made a perfect frame for the piece. I made the binding in the usual way, using 2-1/2-inch strips. I stitched the binding to the front, just a bit deeper than the 1/4-inch most use. My main sewing machine foot is a smidgen wider, more like 3/8-inch, and I like the look of that on a wall hanging or a bed quilt.

Football season means the handwork goes quickly.

Now, for a label. I am a firm believer that we must label our quilts. It isn’t for us, or the person to whom we gift a quilt, it is for the next generation after that, and the one 100 years from now. I cannot tell you how often I was brought a quilt to repair where the owner didn’t know who made it. Maybe it was Grandma, or her sister? Or some cousin several times removed? Every time it was a regret and a sadness that they didn’t know. In some cases, they did know who, but didn’t know when. I would encourage them to make a label with whatever information they had, take a guess as to the decade it was made and write circa 1940s (or whenever). At least future generations would have an idea. I use a program called Embrilliance for writing the details, so I pulled that up on my old laptop. I dedicated the old one to just embroidery, so I can keep all the files and programs on it.

Then I found a fun little graphic with a mason jar in it at Designs by Juju (no affiliation, just a satisfied customer).

I transferred both to the sewing machine with a USB stick, and merged them on the screen.

I line up my embroidery threads in color order in an egg carton, and start stitching.

I thought that the ‘f’ in Festival was capitalized, but it doesn’t really look like it. Oh, well.

I stitched it on the back by hand. The binding is finished and looks nice.

On the back, the label has the basic information. So when someone finds it in a thrift store 100 years from now, they will know who made it and when.

Oh my goodness! I have a weird fascination with crows.
Wicked eve crows caught my eye and I might just have to base a quilt off of it!
Fat Quarter shop is great. I’ve had my eye on the newest line Dwell from Camille Roskelly. Your autumn quilt turned out beautifully! I didn’t have time to join in this year, but I may refer back to it. Thanks for all you do!
Wow so many new beautiful fat quarter bundles on the Fat Quarter Shop website. I’m a fan of the Colors 2024 Blossom Fat Quarter Bundle
Christopher Thompson for Riley Blake Designs. The colors are amazing.
What excites me about the Fat Quarter Shop is the variety of fabric lines-I can always find what I am looking for and at a reasonable price!
Fat Quarter Shop !! I love that shop. Both Lovestruck by Lela Boutique and Roar by Tula Pink. Fantastic looking lines of fabric. Thanks for the chance to win !
The Acorn Products Easy E Sprayer is on the flash sale!!! I’ve tried starch, no starch, no wash, wash and then starch, a little starch and a lot of starch. Overall, I love the Acorn products best! And with the Easy E Sprayer, it prevents hand fatigue and doesn’t put any additional chemicals into the air. I highly recommend it!!!
I’ve had my eye on the Simply Jelly Rolls book by It’s Sew Emma. Also appreciate all the cross stitch patterns and supplies that FQS carries. Congrats on another year of Autumn Jubilee!
I’m excited about the Shoreline Jelly by Camille Roskelley. The blues and greens are beautiful and these colors together would be a different color group for me to work with. Thank you Fat Quarter Shop for the giveaway and thanks again Carole for Autumn Jubilee again this year!!
I love the idea of composing your label on the laptop & transferring via USB. So much faster to type on a keyboard rather than the embroidery machine. I need to bring my old laptop up to speed & get on board. I was good & labeled my last two quilts as soon as they were finished, someday the backlog will get done. Love love love the plaid binding, this is such a fun quilt – I keep imagining applesauce in those swirly beige Mason jars.
I agree Julie! How amazing to do the design on your laptop.
Love the label. I’ve embroidered sayings but never thought of combining it with a design. Love the JuJu designs, my favorite.
There are so many things to be excited about at Fat Quarter Shop. There are times when I’m on the site that I feel somewhat overwhelmed by all they have to offer. However, because they offer so much I know I’m sure to find what it is that I need. From bundles to yardage to cross-stitch, I can always find something. I especially like the way they separate items into categories so that I can click on bundles to find what I need and not have to look through hundreds of items that don’t apply. Excited? You might say that.
I love following the tutorials and sew a longs. It’s such a wealth of info plus the visuals in new fabric lines.
Thanks for all the fun. Since I’m already a winner, I’ll just say good luck to all the rest.
I love the Behind The Scenes videos. I learn so many tips and the Fat Quarter Shop has so many patterns and products. They have prompt services also.
The brown plaid makes a perfect binding on this year’s quilt. I’m a pushover for Christmas fabric. Better Not Pout by Dan DiPaolo for Clothworks Fabrics caught my eye!
Oh The Fat Quarter shop!
Such a great variety! I’d choose the Kaffe Spring 2023 Vineyard Fat Quater collection- just love those bright colors!!
Your label is lovely for the quilt. The embroidery adds so much to it. I also love your binding choice.
I’m excited to see Shoreline in the FQS.
Love Fat Quarter Shop! I have all of the Acorn products except for the Easy E Sprayer. That should go on my Christmas list!
I am looking forward to seeing the new Besties fabric line!
I am a Tula Pink snob and the new line, Roar, with the dinosaurs is calling my name. Love the binding on your quilt. Plaids and stripes just add so much to the quilt. Great label, too.
I’m excited about the Pin Lover’s Club: Just Desserts from Just Another Button Company at the Fat Quarter Shop. The pincushions are darling and every quarter you get some handmade buttons on pins to put in the pincushion project they send. I signed up on the spot and I’m looking forward to doing the projects! Fat Quarter Shop always has great stuff.
I looked at what’s new at the fat quarter shop. When I typed in what’s new, the site showed me a lovely fabric line called hello bear. This will be darling for the baby quilts I sew!
Linen Cupboard fabrics by Fig Tree has caught my eye! Fat Quarter Shop has such a great selection of fabric and anything else related to quilting.
There is a new collection called Picnic by Tanya Whelan that looks perfect for a new spring project I have in mind. I like the label that you added to your quilt. I got a new embroidery machine, so I’m going to try it!
Fat Quarter Shop’s products are great, but I’m most excited by the choice of paying now for a pre-order or paying a small, non-refundable reservation fee.
I am loving they have Gutermann thread on sale! Notion of month I believe! I need to buy a few for gifts for my sisters!
I like to slow down this Christmas season. I see this cross stitch:
North Pole Cross Stitch Pattern
Kathy Barrick
I love plaid bindings.
Your label is absolutely darling! I love FQS…I love their kits and notions but most of all I love the SewSampler monthly box. Not only does it come it a turquoisey-blue box, (reminds me of a Tiffany blue box…lol) but always has a notion that I probably wouldn’t have the opportunity to buy locally plus patterns and fabrics (usually charms paks or fat quarters or jelly rolls). It’s affordable and I’ve yet to get one that I didn’t adore!
Your plaid binding is great!! FQS has some pretty batik bundles that would be fun to use.
I love Corey Yoder’s new line Peachy Keen plus all the Halloween stuff at Fat Quarter Shop. They’re my go to online shop!
I love the English Lavender Fat Quarter Bundle! So pretty.
Carla from Arizona
There are so many items that excite me at FQS. I really love the new kitchen towels by Laundry Baskets Quilts to add some quilty cuteness to the kitchen! The new Lovestruck fabric by Lella Boutique is also on my list of wants, as well as many new cross-stitch patterns.
Stash Busting with 3-Yard Quilts Booklet looks like something I am going to need.
That is definitely the perfect binding fabric for your quilt, Carole! I agree with you about the labels, too – that’s a good reminder to actually label my quilts consistently.
At Fat Quarter shop I loved the Butterflies and Blooms fat quarter bundle. Such pretty blues!
WOW this quilt turned out so nice. I love that your machine can do that embroidery. It looks stunning, excellent design. This feature is amazing and wonderful. My hand embroidery skills are messy.
I like everything at FQS. They are my favorite online shop by leaps and bounds.
At present I like any fabrics by Cori Yoder or Brenda Riddle.
Hubbs and I are all ready for Halloween🎃
This has been a fun month, I read every day but had a difficult time fitting in a minute to comment. (lots of paperwork following daddy’s passing)
You put in an extraordinary effort for your Autumn Jubilee. Well done Carole ❤
Your finished quilt is so festive! Wonderful pattern. What excites me about Fat Quarter shop???- just getting an email from them and looking at the daily flash sale – but what gets me most excited is a package being delivered with their label on it!
I love browsing the Fat Quarter Shop. The thing that always excites me is going to their Sew Along page and then looking up the tutorials online. The patterns and fabrics are always just beautiful.
I saw several kitchen towels from Laundry Basket Quilts. The split nine-patch design was very pretty.
Thanks for your hard work in preparing for your Autumn Jubilee. You’ve presented some fun projects.
Toot much to pick from at Fat Quarter Shop. But I really love the Hush Hush 3 Fat Quarter Bundle.
I love the label on the quilt. It turned out so nice. What a great design. Thank you so much for everything.
My husband wants a window pane quilt. I think fat quarters shop Vintage Red Truck in Autumn Colors would be great
Your autumn jubilee quilt turned out beautifully. I don’t have an embroidery machine so just use text from my domestic machine. It would be fun to make prettier labels
Thanks for a fun project.
I like the dish towels with quilt designs on them. They are all so charming it would be hard to choose just one. Thanks.
I love Fat Quarter Shop! My favorite thing is the Precuts of the Week.
I’m excited about the new Barbie Fat Quarter bundle coming out!
Your quilt turned out so well! The label is especially fancy with the jar embroidery design on it. I have many designs from Juju and they always stitch out so well. I really like your idea of setting up the embroidery threads in an egg carton…that’s genius! Fat Quarter Shop is a one-stop shop for anything sewing or craft related, and they’ve got a ruler that I’d like to add to my treasures: Creative Grids 6.5″ x 18.5″ Quilting Ruler
This is so pretty
I like your suggestion of adding labels to quilts, big and small. I have several wall hangings that I should add labels too. I had to chuckle when you said whoever finds them in a thrift store several years from now will know who made it.
I love the fat quarter bundles and have bought a few of them. I like Riley Blake, Pat Sloan and Sherry and Camille and many more. Your quilt is beautiful.
I have not been good about labeling my quilts, but I think I will make a point of doing so going forward. I am going to look into the Embrilliance software since your label came out so nice 🙂 I love the colors in the Fluttering Leaves Fat Quarter Bundle by Kansas Troubles Quilters for Moda Fabrics.
Look it up on youtube, there is a way to use it with a free version, and there are lots of tutorials there too.
thanks for taking the time to reply and let me know that 💕
I always like to check out the Flash Sales.
Your label is fabulous! I was looking at FQS’s sales items and saw cotton quilting thread in beautiful colors. I’ve used Americana from JoAnn since I began quilting but I’d like to try another kind, especially for the colors.
What a wonderful finish for your quilt! I love a plaid binding. I checked out FQS and there are lots of things to get excited about! This time of year I am especially excited about fall colors and fabrics. I saw this bundle that I really liked: September 2023 Sew Colorful Orange Fat Quarter Bundle Curated by Fat Quarter Shop
This looks lovely, Carole! I thought of you yesterday — I went to an estate sale of a woman who taught quilting at one of our large local quilt shops (Country Stitches — it’s huge.) She had fat quarters — fill a bag for $12 and yesterday it was 25% off. (I’m going back today — but alas, not for fabric!) They were beautiful pieces and it was yet another time I wish I sewed! It would have been bad for your Stashbusting! I found some small Christmas angels from Germany and a piece of Quimper — I might have to go back today and get another at half!
Your statements about labeling quilts are so true. I’ve begun doing this in a very simple way (name, date, city, state) at the urging of friends who also quilt. Thank you again for sharing another terrific Autumn Jubilee project! Looking at the Fat Quarter website, I am inspired by the many patterns and downloaded a few for future projects.
Connie W.
I enjoy all the seasonal free patterns at the Fat Qtr shop and a wide selection of fabrics.
I love what you did with your label. And at FQS Delivered with Love Layer Cake is calling my name…almost bought it shop hopping today!
I love the Sparkle Elements fabric from AGF! I also love all the new cross stitch patterns coming. I always label my quilts. I like to use a corner label sometimes.
I was at the International Quilt Museum today and it was truly shocking how many quilts had ‘unidentifiedmaker’!!! We all truly need to label our quilts!
