Ready to have some fun with your embroidery machines? Get out a bunch of fall color rayon threads, and sew along as we are going to do a fun and quick project that can be finished in just a couple of hours. Today we’ll so some stitch outs, as you’ll want more than just one! For my first choice, I’ll be stitching out the motif on the center right of the card below, but note that I’ll change the green leaves to a fall color. I set out my threads in an egg carton with the bottom of the cells numbered to keep my threads in order and prevent them from rolling away.
Stitching goes well when the fabric is properly prepared. I use two layers of Sulky Totally Stable Press On Tear Away stabilizer underneath, and a layer of Sulky Solvy water soluble on top.
Green leaves are stitched in gold for Autumn.
First one done, the acorns have that feeling of fall in the air.
Next, let’s do something for Halloween. I don’t have a large motif for this holiday, but I do have a jack-o-lantern, and a bat. I started with the jack-o-lantern, stitching it out in orange and black.
Next, I added three bats. That wasn’t quite enough, so I changed to my fonts card, and added the word “Boo!” in purple. Tearing away the Solvy stabilizer is easy, and any remaining in tiny spots washes away with a bit of water.
One more motif, I did this group of three leaves in a fall orangish gold with brown veining.
When you have your motifs done, trim the fabrics to a multiple of 2 plus 1/2 inch. For the first one, I trimmed to 4-1/2-inches.
For the Halloween grouping, I trimmed to 6-1/2 inches.
Now, grab that scrap bag, and cut 2-1/2 inch squares to border the stitchery. Make a pleasing arrangement of colors and prints, then sew two of the squares together for two sides.
Add the remaining four squares to the other two sides.
For the Halloween block, I didn’t have any prints for Halloween, so I just used scraps in orange, purple, black and green.
If you’d rather do just a plain border, feel free to choose a coordinating print for a simple 2-1/2 inch strip border.
For next time, you’ll need to find some ribbon, a piece for each motif about 15 inches long, and 1/4 yard of a coordinating print to finish our project. I’m not going to reveal what it is just yet, but you’ll want a bunch of these when we are done!!

Looking at the first egg carton with the pretty fall threads lined up made me go ‘yum’! I don’t have an embroidery machine so I’ll just be following this unit & imagining what I could do if I took the plunge & bought one. It’s been on my ‘maybe some day’ list but I’m not ready yet. I really like quilting & knitting the most so it seems best to concentrate my efforts there. However, I did buy Sulky threads to do embroidered letters when I make a label.

I love seeing all the fabric pulls for your Autumn Jubilee, and wow, fantastic embroidery pieces in this post. I have an embroidery attachment on one of my old Bernina’s but haven’t used it in years. I do use the multitude of Isacord Embroidery thread for quilting tops as it works well in that capacity. Not entering the free raffle, just wanted to say how beautiful your embroidery pieces are and how I’m enjoying following along on everyone’s choices for the Jubilee quilt. I’m working on my Christmas items now, having finished my Fall items, because I’m slow. Maybe next year I can leave some time open to join in on your Autumn Jubilee.

I think the Sulky products I’d most like to try are their cotton threads for quilting but have to have the Beginner Quilt Kit. The little kit is perfect to carry a rotary cutter to classes and the contents have to be great products for any level of quilters (right?)
