It is the final week of our quilt along for #autumnjubilee2020, and today we finish the assembly and quilting of the mystery row quilt. I have said not to sew the rows together before now, and now I’ll show you why. I auditioned putting mine together without sashing and it just didn’t look good. When I added strips of background to separate the rows, the quilt looked much better! So today we add sashing, finish assembly and add borders.
Start by cutting and/or constructing background sashing strips.
Six background sashing strips 2-1/2-inches x 48-1/2-inches
Two background side strips 2-1/2-inches x 61-1/2-inches.
Sew a sashing strip to the top of one star row, and the top of the tree row.
Sew them together.
Add a sashing strip to the top of the leaves row.
Sew that row to the top section.
Add sashing to the top of the pumpkin row, and to the top and bottom of the second star row. Then sew the bottom unit together.
Join the top and bottom units. Add the two side sashing strips 2-1/2-inches x 61-1/2-inches to the sides. When you finish this step, the top will measure 52-1/2 inches x 61-1/2 inches.
Now for borders. I love a scrappy border as it uses up more scraps from the bins. If you want to duplicate mine, cut at least 112 bricks 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches. This will give you some leeway in colors if you get the same ones on the ends. Cut four squares 3-1/2-inches square for the corners. Chain stitch, or make as leader-ender pieces, sewing the long sides together.
Measure your sides, and sew borders as usual. These will not fit exactly, so just sew just inside previous seam lines on random areas to take up the excess where needed before sewing to the top. This will make them all look the same, even though some will be a smidgen smaller. I have 31 on the long sides, and 26 on the short sides, not including the 3-1/2-inch squares in the corners.
Add a final border in a width of your choice, using the Measure and Cut method. Mine is 4-inches in width. I didn’t have enough fabric to do 5 inches as suggested by the Fibonacci sequence and have enough left for the binding too. And I wanted to save enough for the binding.
OK, now to quilt. I auditioned threads and decided on a golden taupe Glide thread for the top. I used Bottom Line in the bobbin.
The pantograph is Maple Dance designed by Karen Thompson for Intelligent Quilting.
It looks great with this Autumn quilt.
The thread color goes well with all the colors in this quilt.
And just a day or two later, the quilting is complete.
I bound it in the same fabric as the border. Looks great with the Autumn Jubilee pillowcases and the Wool Stitch Along pillow. This is a queen size bed, so you can get an idea of how big mine turned out with three borders. It looks like fall in an Autumn Jubilee guest room with the wool pillow and the leaf pillowcases too.

Just beautiful! The sashing did help bring out each row in your quilt. I like that the quilt fits a queen sized bed but that your directions could be used for smaller sizes if that is preferred or needed.

The individual steps all have pdfs to download. This final sashing is just some strips and adding your own spin on borders, so I didn’t do a pdf for it.
If you are at your computer, right click on the screen, You should get an option to print, and when your printer settings come up change from your printer destination to save as a PDF. It will capture all the comments, but that can’t be helped. Once you have saved the blog post as a PDF, you can open it, and print first 12 pages.

This is a humdinger of a finish!!! Yes, needs the sashing strips for sure and the pieced border is the frosting on the cake! Looks so good with your chosen quilt pattern—makes it much more dynamic, imho. One of the things I never cared for in row quilts was that rows pretty much bled into one another and they were kind of “static”. Your quilt doesn’t have those issues. Wonderful finish!

See my post on borders for a full description of Measuring and Applying Borders. Use the seams in your scrappy border to take up any excess length. So if your top measures 48-1/2-inches, and your scrappy border is 49 inches, sew a little bit deeper on a few seams between the scraps to take up that extra half-inch.
