Autumn Jubilee Quilt Along – Assembly and Finish

It is the final week of our quilt along for #autumnjubilee2020, and today we finish the assembly and quilting of the mystery row quilt.  I have said not to sew the rows together before now, and now I’ll show you why.  I auditioned putting mine together without sashing and it just didn’t look good.  When I added strips of background to separate the rows, the quilt looked much better!  So today we add sashing, finish assembly and add borders.

Start by cutting and/or constructing background sashing strips.
Six background sashing strips 2-1/2-inches x 48-1/2-inches
Two background side strips 2-1/2-inches x 61-1/2-inches.

Sew a sashing strip to the top of one star row, and the top of the tree row.

Sew them together.

Add a sashing strip to the top of the leaves row.

Sew that row to the top section.

Add sashing to the top of the pumpkin row, and to the top and bottom of the second star row.  Then sew the bottom unit together.

Join the top and bottom units.  Add the two side sashing strips 2-1/2-inches x 61-1/2-inches to the sides.  When you finish this step, the top will measure 52-1/2 inches x 61-1/2 inches.

Now for borders.  I love a scrappy border as it uses up more scraps from the bins.  If you want to duplicate mine, cut at least 112 bricks 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches.  This will give you some leeway in colors if you get the same ones on the ends.  Cut four squares 3-1/2-inches square for the corners.  Chain stitch, or make as leader-ender pieces, sewing the long sides together.

Measure your sides, and sew borders as usual.  These will not fit exactly, so just sew just inside previous seam lines on random areas to take up the excess where needed before sewing to the top.  This will make them all look the same, even though some will be a smidgen smaller.  I have 31 on the long sides, and 26 on the short sides, not including the 3-1/2-inch squares in the corners.

Add a final border in a width of your choice, using the Measure and Cut method.  Mine is 4-inches in width.  I didn’t have enough fabric to do 5 inches as suggested by the Fibonacci sequence and have enough left for the binding too.  And I wanted to save enough for the binding.

OK, now to quilt.  I auditioned threads and decided on a golden taupe Glide thread for the top.  I used Bottom Line in the bobbin.

The pantograph is Maple Dance designed by Karen Thompson for Intelligent Quilting.

It looks great with this Autumn quilt.

The thread color goes well with all the colors in this quilt.

And just a day or two later, the quilting is complete.

I bound it in the same fabric as the border. Looks great with the Autumn Jubilee pillowcases and the Wool Stitch Along pillow.  This is a queen size bed, so you can get an idea of how big mine turned out with three borders.  It looks like fall in an Autumn Jubilee guest room with the wool pillow and the leaf pillowcases too.

How is your quilt coming along?

  1. Well, you sure pulled this one together. It is going to make a nice size quilt and just in time for the weather and the season! I enjoyed doing this. I didn’t think I had the time, but I was able to manage it. Thanks again for hosting this Autumn Jubilee.

  2. Rita Scott

Love your quilt and the quilting for it to a tee. I think we’re in for a long winter, both weather wise and staying safe.
    Thank you

  3. Julie

It’s beautiful! Now, to get busy & sew mine together. With a little tweaking, I see this in Christmas colors. The pumpkins would look like ornaments.

  4. Stacy in NC

The Maple Dance quilting is lovely! Now I’m wondering what sort of machine you have for quilting- time to look through the archive. Thanks for putting together the Autumn Jubilee; it has been such fun to follow along.

  5. C

Just beautiful! The sashing did help bring out each row in your quilt. I like that the quilt fits a queen sized bed but that your directions could be used for smaller sizes if that is preferred or needed.

What a fun mystery quilt along this has been – I have always wanted to make a row by row quilt. Thank you Carole for a fun Autumn Jubilee!

  7. CAROL S NELMS

Thanks for the great giveaways, and your work. Here’s hoping for the chance to get together with family and friends over the next months.

  8. It’s a beautiful quilt. I am two rows behind due to election duties, and won’t be able to work on it for about 3 weeks. Any chance you could make this a printable pdf? Otherwise, I am afraid I will never get back to it. Yours is gorgeous! Love Love Love it!

    1. If you are at your computer, right click on the screen, You should get an option to print, and when your printer settings come up change from your printer destination to save as a PDF. It will capture all the comments, but that can’t be helped. Once you have saved the blog post as a PDF, you can open it, and print first 12 pages.

  9. That is just beautiful, Carole! I love the pieced border! My Autumn Jubilee project is going to become a tall, but narrow wall-hanging, with one or two of the blocks in each row. I’m loving it in cheddar and dark blue, and need to share some photos!

  10. Elizabeth Brown

Love what you have done. I was not going to participate, but I am now. Are all the patterns still in your blog? thanks Liz

      Wow, Carole,
The whole thing looks beautiful. You do give terrific directions. I’m going to try some trees to go with my pumpkins.
      Thanks for the inspiration!

What a great quilt! I think I’ll stop at the patchwork border and make more of a throw quilt for my family room. Thanks for the inspiration!

  13. Kim

Autumn quilts are my favorites! Love this one and look forward to completing it! Thank you for sharing your talents!

  14. This is a humdinger of a finish!!! Yes, needs the sashing strips for sure and the pieced border is the frosting on the cake! Looks so good with your chosen quilt pattern—makes it much more dynamic, imho. One of the things I never cared for in row quilts was that rows pretty much bled into one another and they were kind of “static”. Your quilt doesn’t have those issues. Wonderful finish!

At 31* and snowing this morning it is a perfect day to work in the sewing room. Off to see what I have in store for the scrappy border! Thanks a million for another over-the-top Autumn Jubilee!

  15. Cathy B.

Thanks to both you & your sponsors for yet another wonderful Autumn Jubilee! Now to start in on the Christmas sewing!

  17. I may try to get my inner borders on today. I love the scrappy border, I have four special charms I was hoping to use somewhere on this quilt and they will be perfect for the corners! I may have to buy some yardage for the final border, it is so pretty that way!

Hello Carole, I have had such fun creating all of the projects for Autumn Jubilee this year! The quilt block Rows were such a great way to add a delightful mystery into this part of the adventure this month. I am thrilled that I stopped my other projects to participate and make all of the projects that I did this month. Your quilt is beautiful and adding the pillowcases and the wool pillow all work together to create such a warm and inviting room in your home, Carole. Thank you for designing all of these great projects and sharing them with us! Have a spectacular day!

  28. Lisa England

I haven’t been able to sew along but I have saved the info so I can make the quilt later. I’ve enjoyed seeing your quilt!

  29. Janet Nancy

Life got in my quilting way, so I have not been able to start my quilt as yet. I did pull some fabric before the chaos struck, so it is, at least, still on my iist. I have enjoyed the hop with morning coffee before the daily storm!

  30. Jo Anne Seccurra

Love the finished quilt and how you outlined each step along the way in an easy to understand way. Thank you Carole.

  31. kattails

This has been a great row-a-long and makes a beautiful quilt. The finished quilt just sings ‘autumn bounty’. Thank you, Carole!

  32. ??? ???? ???? Thank you very much for your pattern.

But I don’t understand her sentences:: Measure your sides, and sew borders as usual. These will not fit exactly, so just sew just inside previous seam lines on random areas to take up the excess where needed before sewing to the top. This will make them all look the same, even though some will be a smidgen smaller.
What do you mean??? Could you explain it more clear?? ???? ???? ????

    Greeting Guilitta
