Wrapping up the Teacups Quilt Along, today I’ll show you how I finished mine. When we left off last month, the blocks were assembled with filler bits to take up the blank spaces between blocks of uneven size.
Now, what to do for borders? I auditioned several prints, but all of them seemed too busy or distracting.
So I went with a black background fabric with a bit of gold print. It reads more neutral and created a nice frame for the quilt. Next was loading it on the longarm.
I chose a taupe color Glide thread for the top, with a close match Bottom Line for the bobbin. On the back is the tea words print that I tea-dyed.
I used a curvy pantograph called Halcyon by Lorien Quilting as it looked a little like wisps of steam coming from the teacups.
The batting is Hobbs 100% cotton.
I quilted over the stitchery without any problems.
I did the same for the appliques.
With just a few passes, it was done. It is great to work on small projects that finish quickly sometimes!
Here’s a closer look, I do like the way this turned out.
I used the same fabric for the binding as I had for the border.
One day of stitching while watching a football playoff game and it was done.
I hung it on the wall in the sewing room.
I’ll enter this into the fair this year, in the category of multiple techniques.
I really love the cranes in the upper corners.
This photo is a bit yellow, but you get the idea. I need to press it again as the lower left corner wants to curl and not hang flat.
If you are just now finding this quilt along, you can get all the free patterns and buy the book for some of them by clicking on Teacups Quilt Along on the sidebar. There are 16 blocks plus the assembly posts to see. The free patterns will remain free.
How’s your teacup quilt coming along? Are you sewing this week on a project?
I really like how that turned out. Cute and elegant at the same time. You also chose a good border fabric and quilting pattern. Surely you will win a ribbon at the fair!
Gosh it’s fun seeing all that familiar fabric!
This is just lovely Carole!
Your Teacups Quilt is just beautiful. Thank you for the free patterns since I am inspired by yours.
Very lovely indeed, and a delight for us tea drinkers to see! I am still working on some Christmas projects!
That turned out really cute. I’ll be looking forward to seeing others pop up on social media.
Your teacup quilt is lovely. Thanks for the free pattern. Have a great day!
Awesome, Carole!!! I love the border print, too!!!
I love your quilt too
This is lovely, Carole … I really have to agree with the black background. It does show the teacups beautifully … Thank you for this QAL … I love it. AND loving the book …
Great project Carole; especially like the tea bags block! Your border fabric choice is spot-on.
Hello Carole, Your Tea Cup Quilt did turn out fabulous! The design you chose for the quilting is lovely and you are right, in my opinion, it does look like swirls of light steam. Using the black print was also a very good choice. I hope that it does fantastically at the fair this year! I will post my progress today on the Face Book Group. I have really enjoyed this Tea Cup Quilt Along and am so glad that I did decide to do it. Have a fantastic day!
Delightful!!!!!
Love your quilt!!!!!!! So unique!
Great finish. I think the black border worked perfectly.
Love how all your different blocks look together in the unusual layout and the brown/gold print is a great frame border. Thanks for all you share.
Your quilt is really lovely. You have the perfect spot to hang it, too. That’s a great frame for it, and the quilting is just right.
A friend recently moved to a smaller home and asked if I would like her fabric! Ha! Does it bring it’s own trailer? But of course I said yes and there is 4 yards of teacup print fabric and 2 of the animal alphabet panels that you did and we all adored!!!! And it’s not even my birthday! So the Sewing for the Kids will get the alphabet ones – but I’m finally going to do the Teacup quilt from he QAL just for me.
I always loved it but so much other stuff to do! Now I can’t possible pass it up!
