The Quilts of Valor Live Blog Event is in just over a week!! I hope that there are some blocks going in the mail today! But if you are almost done and need to mail Monday, that is fine. If you do not sew, you can still participate, just make a donation to your local QOV group to help them buy batting and backing fabrics.
As long as I have the blocks by next Friday, I can use them for the event. I am hoping to have several dozen star blocks to pair with the nine-patch blocks we will make at the event. But, if you mail later, don’t worry, we’ll still use those blocks for a QOV at a later time.
When I went to the PO Box recently, a package was there with these beautiful blocks. The sender put my name and address in both the ship from and ship to areas.
He/she truly wants to remain anonymous, and had included a note. To the sender, I want to tell you that I understand, I’ve lost my own WWII veteran father too. This is the only way I can let you know the blocks were received and very much appreciated. The package held twelve beautifully sewn 9-patch star blocks. Thank you so much, these will be beautiful in the quilts.
For the sew day, I have made one kit that will make 12 more stars with a light blue background. I have already drawn the diagonal lines on the back of the larger blue squares so we can jump in making HSTs for the blocks. These blocks will have solid centers instead of nine-patches, just so it goes faster.
Then, I pulled a couple of yards of a light off-white, cut a bunch of squares and marked those, too.
These will be even more blocks when put with the fabrics we will cut that day.
Those coming to cut fabric will have a huge tub of reds and blues, with some patriotic prints to add. We’ll be cutting larger centers for star blocks, squares to pair with the whites for half-square triangles, and lots of 4-1/2-inch squares to make big nine-patch alternate blocks.
More door prizes arrived, so now we have a bunch of great things for the day, for the mail in block entries and our Facebook group, Friends of From My Carolina Home. I would love for those interested to join our group, but you must answer the questions or you will be declined by the moderators. This keeps the group free of spam, and only open to those real sewists and quilters. Bots don’t answer questions.
Door prizes include a queen size Quilter’s Dream batting from Quilter’s Dream, Quilt Modern Curves and Bold Stripes and Ombre Quilts 6 Colorful Projects books from C&T Publishing, Aurifil Threads, a Wool Press Mat, Ultimate Presser Foot Set, and a Sew Bright sewing machine light kit from MadamSew, along with a special gift pouch of goodies, coffee mug and more from me.
Here is the design we will be making. It is my original design that I am calling To The Nines. “To the nines” is an English idiom meaning “to perfection” or “to the highest degree” or to dress “buoyantly and high class” (Wikipedia). I’ll be writing it up for Quilts of Valor to have for their free pattern section, and I’ll publish it here on the blog as well after the event.
I’ll also be using the other star blocks I made in the Tucker class in this same configuration. So all the star blocks will get used, no matter what the design.
Do you like my design alternating star blocks with nine-patches? Are you participating in some way with the national Sew Day?
