The Wool Stitch Along begins today, with an original pattern and a fabulous giveaway!! We’ve done some little penny rugs in the past, and last year did a fun mini wall hanging. This year we go bigger, with a table runner.
You know that I only recommend what I use, and I am really impressed with the wool fabrics I purchased from Primitive Homespuns (not an affiliate). The wool is tightly compacted, and there is no need to ‘felt’ it before stitching. It is just heavenly to work with. One of the things I love about these luscious wool fabrics is the size of the cuts. Fat Quarters are approximately 17-18 inches wide, and 28-30 inches long. So I ordered this gorgeous dark brown (Oh My Gosh Brown) fat quarter for a base, along with some 15×8 pieces in fall colors. I have an assortment of values too, with some lights and some mediums as well as a dark.
We’ll put the same design on each end of the runner. Measure your table or the place you’ll want to display your project, and plan your runner size to fit your table. Mine will be 12×28 inches. Lay out your wools, and decide how you want to distribute the colors.
Aurifil was nice enough to send me a selection of wool threads to try out, and I am looking forward to stitching with them.

The pattern has a selection of leaf shapes, and a pumpkin and you’ll want to cut 2 of each. These beautiful wool fabrics are from Primitive Homespuns. I used a variety of colors of wool, with the rust for the pumpkin, and then red, gold and green for the leaves. One leaf is in a dark plum.
Arrange a bed of leaves using one of each pattern piece at one end of your runner, and place the pumpkin on top slightly over the ends of some of the leaves. We’ll put the same thing on the other end.
When you are happy with the arrangement, pin in place and stitch.
I’m going to be stitching with you this week, as I was not able to get this completed before the event began. I hope to get to adding the details next week. I have never tried wool applique, but I have done a few other applique pieces in the past. I would love to try this technique. I just enjoyed a visit to Primitive Homespuns. I am inspired.
Can’t wait to get started on this wool appliqué. I have to dig in my stash to find the perfect wool colors to use. Wish I had the nice thread, but I’ll be using embroidery thread instead. I absolutely love Primitive Homespuns Christmas Plaid wool. I signed up my email address with them.

I have made only one project using wool and I was smitten with its softness and texture! There are so many great ideas at Primitive Homespuns…the one I’d love to make is the Penny Christmas Tree.
I would love to make that cute sewing roll. It has been years since i’ve Done wool work. I’d like to see a good book on the various stitches for beginners.
I’d like to try this! I’ve never worked with this type of wool appliqué but have admired it. I love the fabrics you chose but got lost in all the wonderful fabrics on their website. My favorite is a lovely plaid called Fantasia.

On a trip to Amish country in Berlin, Ohio I bought a yard of gorgeous brown wool and have NOT cut into it yet…tomorrow is the day to do that! I’ve only worked on one wool applique project previously. The autumn color wool plaids are my favorites on the site, pretty much any one of them, but especially those with pumpkin or earthy tones.

Having never stitched with wool, I’m looking forward to watching how this is done and what supplies etc I need to get. Hopefully the local Joann’s has something or I fear I’ll not get it in time from the Internet to join in! Looking forward to learning something new.

Oh my gosh! The new wool page has two pieces I must have. Both are reversible, too. Subtle Stripe and Green Stripe are on my list, just need to decide how much of each.

Carole, tou’re going to love working with the Aurifil Lana Wool threads — they are wonderful paired with wool applique! Really like Primitive Homespuns multi-colored wools — that’s something I don’t usually buy (I tend to get the “solid” colors) but they have a Geometric wool that I can see so many possibilities for! Not to mention homespun is my favorite backing to use for wool projects.
My wish list items are the folk art pumpkin quilt and the shadow box! So cute! It’s colorful enough to display year round.
