Autumn Jubilee Wool Stitch Along

The Wool Stitch Along begins today, with an original pattern and a fabulous giveaway!!  We’ve done some little penny rugs in the past, and last year did a fun mini wall hanging.  This year we go bigger, with a table runner.

You know that I only recommend what I use, and I am really impressed with the wool fabrics I purchased from Primitive Homespuns (not an affiliate). The wool is tightly compacted, and there is no need to ‘felt’ it before stitching.  It is just heavenly to work with.  One of the things I love about these luscious wool fabrics is the size of the cuts.  Fat Quarters are approximately 17-18 inches wide, and 28-30 inches long.  So I ordered this gorgeous dark brown (Oh My Gosh Brown) fat quarter for a base, along with some 15×8 pieces in fall colors.  I have an assortment of values too, with some lights and some mediums as well as a dark.

We’ll put the same design on each end of the runner.  Measure your table or the place you’ll want to display your project, and plan your runner size to fit your table.  Mine will be 12×28 inches. Lay out your wools, and decide how you want to distribute the colors.

Aurifil was nice enough to send me a selection of wool threads to try out, and I am looking forward to stitching with them.

Beautiful colors, some are just perfect for this project.

The pattern has a selection of leaf shapes, and a pumpkin and you’ll want to cut 2 of each.  These beautiful wool fabrics are from Primitive Homespuns.  I used a variety of colors of wool, with the rust for the pumpkin, and then red, gold and green for the leaves.  One leaf is in a dark plum.

Arrange a bed of leaves using one of each pattern piece at one end of your runner, and place the pumpkin on top slightly over the ends of some of the leaves.  We’ll put the same thing on the other end.

When you are happy with the arrangement, pin in place and stitch.

  1. I have never tried wool applique, but I have done a few other applique pieces in the past. I would love to try this technique. I just enjoyed a visit to Primitive Homespuns. I am inspired.

Can’t wait to get started on this wool appliqué. I have to dig in my stash to find the perfect wool colors to use. Wish I had the nice thread, but I’ll be using embroidery thread instead. I absolutely love Primitive Homespuns Christmas Plaid wool. I signed up my email address with them.

I love fall patterns. I’m excited to add this one to this month’s projects that I want to stitch. Thank you! I also love the shop Primitive Homespuns; I was just there yesterday buying some beautiful wool. Happy stitching and thanks again!

I LOVE Primitive Homespun!! I am fortunate enough to live only 45 min from the store. I would love to try needle punch, especially one of Teresa Koguts patterns.

  3. Laura W Suich

Good morning, I really like the Stacked Flowers pattern. I have finished many wool projects. Wool is so forgiving. Your stitches don’t have to be perfect.

  4. Cathy B.

Just starting on my wool applique journey – thank you for introducing me to a great resource. I like the block they have designed for the Wooly Adventure.

I’ve always wanted to try real wool appliqué! I love the Brown Bird October 31st pattern. It is adorable! Thanks for introducing me their shop. We don’t have any places like that in our area!

  7. JennyM

i am a novice when it comes to working with wool. The few small projects I have done have been fun and I’m excited to try another one.

Beautiful wools. I love those purple/plum pieces with the other fall colors. Wool applique is one of my favorite “take as you travel” activities. I am so glad you are feeling better.

  9. Mary Stori

Though I haven’t been working with it much lately, you know how fond I am of wool. This is just a delightful autumn warming project….good job!

I am just starting to explore the wonderful world of working with wool projects. I now have two beautiful ones to finish and loving every minute I work on them.
I love your posts and projects you share.

What a beautiful start! Pumpkins and leaves on black wool are lovely. And your source of wool looks wonderful! She has gorgeous wools perfect for those pumpkins especially!

Thanks for introducing Homespuns Wool and Needle. The wool fabrics look so yummy. Love the Oak Leave and Acorns BOM

  14. I loved that Five Petals applique kit on their website! I hope to stitch along with you on this project, but have to go look at my scraps first. Or maybe go do a little shopping? 🙂 Thanks for a lovely pattern, Carole!

  15. Wendy

Thank you for the pattern! I have just begun to get started in wool applique. I have a few patterns and a bit of wool but need to invest in some threads.

  16. Joan Sheppard

Very excited to try wool thread – I had to look it up as I’ve never even heard of that. Embroidery, crewel yes but this takes it to a whole new level. Got some wool 1/2 yards in Minnesota last year.
    Thanks

  17. I’d enjoy learning either needlepunch or rug hooking. I liked the three-dimensional run hooked bunny at Primitive Happenings. I really like working with Aurifil wool thread!

  18. Pam

These colors are beautiful! I love working with wool. I’d love to get the mitten kit from Primitive Homespuns. I’ve always wanted a pair of wool mittens. Thanks for the great project and awesome giveaway!

Wooly Block Adventure Kit 2019 with Threads & Fleece is adorable and I would love to make this addition to my Santa collection!! I have never done wool applique!

  20. Kathy E.

I have made only one project using wool and I was smitten with its softness and texture! There are so many great ideas at Primitive Homespuns…the one I’d love to make is the Penny Christmas Tree.

  21. I would love to make that cute sewing roll. It has been years since i’ve Done wool work. I’d like to see a good book on the various stitches for beginners.

  22. Joy B

I’d like to try this! I’ve never worked with this type of wool appliqué but have admired it. I love the fabrics you chose but got lost in all the wonderful fabrics on their website. My favorite is a lovely plaid called Fantasia.

  23. This will be a beautiful table runner. I love wool applique and am so excited to start. On a trip to Amish country in Berlin, Ohio I bought a yard of gorgeous brown wool and have NOT cut into it yet…tomorrow is the day to do that! Thanks so much…I so look forward to your Autumn Jubilee each year. I hope there are many, many more.

  24. I’ve only worked on one wool applique project previously. The autumn color wool plaids are my favorites on the site, pretty much any one of them, but especially those with pumpkin or earthy tones.

  25. Gwynette in NW Arkansas

I haven’t worked with wool for a while but, the October 31st kit is what I’d want to work on for my decorative table hanger. Hope you are fully recovered!!

  26. Judyk

I do love wool appliqué, it is my evening sewing. Any of the beautiful kits and wool would make a project possible.

  27. Sandra Miller Pitts

I visited Primitive Homespun web site, I really like the Sewing roll set kit and pattern. I love working in wool. Plan to start the table runner next week. I love all of the opportunities during Autumn Jubilee. Thank you so much.

  28. Jan

Having never stitched with wool, I’m looking forward to watching how this is done and what supplies etc I need to get. Hopefully the local Joann’s has something or I fear I’ll not get it in time from the Internet to join in! Looking forward to learning something new.

  29. Rita

The Folk Art Quilt Kit is the one I would put on my wish list. I’ve never done any wool applique but would love to try.

  30. Linda Rhoades

I love the look of wool appliqué!!! I have only done a couple of small projects, like pincushions, but I am planning on starting a wool appliqué quilt soon!! I had not known of Primitive Homespuns before, but will be shopping there for sure now!

  31. Oh my gosh! The new wool page has two pieces I must have. Both are reversible, too. Subtle Stripe and Green Stripe are on my list, just need to decide how much of each.

  32. Heidi

I do love wool applique, and you have reminded me to pull my candle mat from past Jubilee! I made one woolie project since then, a handbag with pennies

  33. mlmcspadden

I’ve done a little wool applique and enjoyed it. I’m saving your table runner because it is lovely and I’d like to make it at some point. Looking at the shop website I’d love to have their Frosty Friend Pattern and Kit. Thanks for all the lovely ideas to come!

  34. Carole, tou’re going to love working with the Aurifil Lana Wool threads — they are wonderful paired with wool applique! Really like Primitive Homespuns multi-colored wools — that’s something I don’t usually buy (I tend to get the “solid” colors) but they have a Geometric wool that I can see so many possibilities for! Not to mention homespun is my favorite backing to use for wool projects.

  35. Debby Patz

My wish list items are the folk art pumpkin quilt and the shadow box! So cute! It’s colorful enough to display year round.

  36. dezertsuz

I could wind up with a long wish list from this shop! It’s reasonably priced, and it has beautiful patterns. I think I’d first order the Wooly Block kit for this year. That Santa is so cute. Then I’d start a collection of those awesome fabrics in usable pieces! Thanks so much for finding this one, and for your new wool pattern, too. I’m going to like this one!
