Once Upon a Story Row Along

Quilt alongs are really fun, and I’ve been joining more of them this year as a designer.   Earlier this summer I did one with Moda for their Summer at the Beach. When when Marian at Seams to Be Sew announced her fifth annual Row Along, I had a idea right away, so I decided to participate and submitted my design.

Each designer has taken a different fairy tale or nursery rhyme  and created a row for a quilt. There are multiple sizes of rows, and some patterns like mine can be made in various sizes to fit the need.  Northcott Fabrics is one of the sponsors of this blogger event, and they generously provided fabrics to us.  I picked the nursery rhyme Baa Baa Black Sheep for my row and used 22137-99 Simply Neutral Black tone on tone tiny floral for the sheep’s wool, 9020-60 April Showers for a light blue sky, 21414-74 Naturescapes grass print for the meadow, and 9040-94 Dublin light grey for the sheep’s legs, ears and face.  The download has detailed instructions, but here is an overview.  Start with deciding on your row size, and cut the meadow and sky fabrics accordingly.

The row is all appliqué, and can be done in whatever method you choose.  I used raw edge appliqué.  Begin the appliqué section by making multiple copies of the sheep appliqué pattern so you can cut out the parts with their extras as noted with the dotted lines for overlap.

Be sure you have all the pieces to complete the sheep.

Cut the face, ears and legs from grey, and the wool body and cap from black.

Assemble the sheep on the background, then use small buttons for the eyes and floss to embroider the nose.

For the bags full of wool, cut the bags from a gold/brown, and the wool from black.  If you want to do the layered effect, make additional copies and cut the indicated sections from grey and black.  Finish the bag with ribbon or perle cotton for a dimensional effect.

The pdf download has instructions for using the appliques on three sizes of row.  Arrange your elements on the meadow as you like.  Add additional elements like trees and flowers to make the block your own.  This pattern will remain free on the blog.

Download the pdf pattern by clicking on Baa Baa Black Sheep

I am also providing one of the Row Along prizes for the event, two pattern booklets of quilts from our local shop hop shops, Carolina Comforts and More Carolina Comforts, a couple of samples of Quilter’s Dream Batting, an Olfa circle cutter attachment for your rotary cutter, and a spool of Aurifil thread, along with a pdf emailed to you of the Scrap Dance pattern of your choice!

Entering is easy, just leave a comment about the Row Along on this post.  Be sure your email address fills in correctly, as that is how I will contact the winner.  You have until midnight on Thursday, October 3 to comment to enter.  Due to the expected high volume of comments on today’s post, I may not be able to personally answer each one as I usually do.  Thank you for understanding.

You can see the amazing line up of other prizes you might win on Marian’s post here including the grand prize of a copy of EQ8!   Click on the image to get to the Rafflecopter entry.  You can also save 20% during the Row Along at Electric Quilt for any of their products by using the code ROWALONG20 at checkout.

Here is the entire schedule so you can go back and get the rows already published, plus come back to see the rest.  The variety and creativity of the other designers is really something special, much more so than mine, so be sure to check them out.
