Assembly of the quilt begins today, and I will give you several ideas to choose from to make your Autumn Jubilee 2018 quilt uniquely yours. You can also use the category Autumn Jubilee on the sidebar to go back and get the patterns from previous years.
Only for you, dear readers, I got down on the floor and played with layouts. This first one has all the pumpkins oriented the same way on the longer axis of my 4×5 block quilt top.
Then I tried doing rows on the shorter axis, with one row right side up, then the next row oriented the opposite.
Using a tumbling pumpkin idea, this way makes the quilt non-directional.
I liked that idea best for mine, so I messed with the orientations a bit.
I sewed the rows, then joined the rows into a top.
Then, I sewed the white pumpkins and stars into a topper. I only made four of these blocks.
After I did that, I thought it might look nicer with sashing. So, I took the topper apart and added black sashing. Putting the sashing in creates a bit of space between the pumpkin and the star point. I actually liked this even more, but I already had the other topper done and wasn’t going to rip it up. I may be nuts, but I’m not crazy, LOL!!
I added two borders to the orange pumpkins top – one of background and a second one of a fall print.
Here’s a close view of the corner. The leaf print goes well with the scrappy fabrics in the top. Next week, we’ll finish it up with quilting.
Now you can decide, pumpkins all the same direction or tumbling? Sashing or no sashing? One or two borders, or more? Scrappy border to use up more bits? It is your quilt! I commented first, then went to the Rafflecopter and found I was supposed to tell you what batting I would try first…I think I would try the wool batting first, because with the quilt I use on my bed now, I still get chilly in the early morning. I used an 80/20 batting in it, so I’m hoping the wool batting would keep me warmer. Thank you for this giveaway! ljbisme at msn dot com
Supreme cotton is the only one that I have not used. I love Hobbs Tuscany battings. They quilt beautifully on my sitdown machine. They launder like a dream. I tend to use them exclusively for my personal quilts.

You are such a productive quilter – I got distracted by some Aha! moments making cards, tho so need to re-orient myself & FOCUS so my little pumpkin/star wall-hanging can get finished for Christmas! I’m going to have to buy these Tuscany battings. I almost always purchase my batting and JoAnn Fabric because it is very close to my home. But, of course, their selection is very limited. I will have to start ordering online because I would love to try these other battings.

Good morning Carole…..I wasn’t sure about the quilt, until I saw it all put together, and I absolutely love it, but this old fogy love the layout with all the pumpkins facing the same way. They are all very pretty, but #1 is my favorite. Sorry to see Fall Jubilee coming to an end.

It’s gorgeous, Carole! I’d say no sashing, pumpkins tumbling (that way quilt can be used in either direction) and I LOVE how the star blocks form the diagonal grid design. It’s just stunning. I think you were right in adding sashing to the table topper….it’s cute as can be. I love those ghostly white pumpkins.

Hi Carole! What a fabulous finish to the Autumn Jubilee. I just love the star block. I used a similar pattern (called Evening Star) to make a quilt of random nine patch blocks. I look forward to seeing how you quilt this. ~smile~ Roseanne

I love your site and appreciate all you do to encourage people to be creative.
Growing up in cold WI, Mom talked about the warmth of woolen blankets. She lovingly cared for them, airing them out in the summertime and storing them with cedar blocks until the cold winds returned again. With that said, WOOL would be my first choice for batting for a sofa quilt for a very tall son in law who is battling brain cancer. I’m working on the top in between caring for their children (2 and 4 years) so it is slow going. Thanks so much and love the pumpkin/star quilt top.

I’m knee deep in Christmas stockings right now, but am so happy you include access to these Autumn Jubilee projects so I can come back and play with pumpkins. as for the batting, I’d like to try the Tuscany Silk Throw first with some cotton voiles. I think the throw will be luxuriously soft.

I use Hobbs batting exclusively and for many years. Wonderful durability and drape. Would love to try their wool batting.

I would first try the brand new twin size batting, the Supreme Cotton. I’m finishing a twin top for my grandson and Cotton is the way to go for their climate. The runner up as a very close second would be the silk batting. I’ve heard wonderful thing about silk but never had the funds to get some just to try. Thanks for the opportunity!

Both of these tops turned out beautifully! I tend to just use plain cotton batting, but am intrigued by both the wool and the silk battings. I would probably use the wool one first to keep me warm in the wintertime.

I never have orange so I bought 4 different orange fat quarters to make some softy pumpkins, then I saw your pumpkin block! so… thanks, another project. I’m finishing hand quilting the leaf runner I started last year from your large leaf block, and I finished the wall hanging from the panel I bought from you on etsy TWO years ago, sheesh, it got put away and forgotten during my move and all it needed was to finish the border and hanging sleeve. big hug dear lady.
and I forgot: will use the silk on something special, my pink ribbon quilt for myself!

I’d like to try the Tuscany Supreme Cotton batting. I have used Hobbs’ Premium, and love it. The quilts are looking so pretty. My quilt will have sashing, and tumbling pumpkin blocks would look great. Like you said, that would make either end the top.

I’ve been wanting to try the wool batting next. I usually use Hobb’s Heirloom and I’ve been happy, but I’ve heard wool is great for warm and cold temps.
I love the pumpkins all right side up so that is the layout I pick. Fall colors are my favorites and your outside border is perfect. I’ve never used that type of batting so it would be fun to try.
The Tuscany Silk Batting would be so nice to try. And your pumpkins, every which way, the ones with the dark sashing are great. Then the background border and multi colour one are a super finish for the larger quilt, love those colours together/ We have a new home to move to early December. no wonder with all the packing I didn’t join in your Autumn Jubilee this year.

I have never tried wool batting, but there is always a first. I need it for the winter months.

I love the tumbling pumpkins layout – good choice! I enjoyed following along as you posted the steps, but decided to just admire from afar this round – I am trying to make some serious progress on many long -time projects this year!
I regularly use Hobbs 80/20 battling and have the plan to try both silk and bamboo on quilts for which the tops are completed. I’m thinking of hand-quilting with the silk.

I’d love to try the Tuscany Cotton Wool Throw. A customer of mine buys Hobbs by the roll and I use it on all of her quilts that I longarm for her. It does quilt nicely.
