Autumn Jubilee Quilt Along – Assembly

Update – See my Buy My Patterns Page to purchase this pattern.

Assembly of the quilt begins today, and I will give you several ideas to choose from to make your Autumn Jubilee 2018 quilt uniquely yours.  You can also use the category Autumn Jubilee on the sidebar to go back and get the patterns from previous years.

Only for you, dear readers, I got down on the floor and played with layouts.  This first one has all the pumpkins oriented the same way on the longer axis of my 4×5 block quilt top.

Then I tried doing rows on the shorter axis, with one row right side up, then the next row oriented the opposite.

Using a tumbling pumpkin idea, this way makes the quilt non-directional.

I liked that idea best for mine, so I messed with the orientations a bit.

I sewed the rows, then joined the rows into a top.

Then, I sewed the white pumpkins and stars into a topper.  I only made four of these blocks.

After I did that, I thought it might look nicer with sashing.  So, I took the topper apart and added black sashing.  Putting the sashing in creates a bit of space between the pumpkin and the star point.  I actually liked this even more, but I already had the other topper done and wasn’t going to rip it up.  I may be nuts, but I’m not crazy, LOL!!

I added two borders to the orange pumpkins top – one of background and a second one of a fall print.

Here’s a close view of the corner.  The leaf print goes well with the scrappy fabrics in the top.  Next week, we’ll finish it up with quilting.

Now you can decide, pumpkins all the same direction or tumbling?  Sashing or no sashing?  One or two borders, or more?  Scrappy border to use up more bits?  It is your quilt!  If you use Flickr, I hope you’ll share all your projects as you keep making progress or finish up on From My Carolina Home Project Sharing on Flickr, or share in our facebook group – From My Carolina Home Project Sharing on Facebook. Oh, my! All sound wonderful since I have not tried Hobbs Tuscany, but I would try the wool first. Love the pumpkins and stars!

  2. Linda Hodges

Wasn’t sure what I felt about the pumpkin quilt but boy, when it was together, it sparkles like jewels. Lovely job. What a great prize too, hope I am lucky. Thank you.

  3. Rosemaryflower

Your quilt alongs are always so pretty. I am going to look at the other quilts.
This is a very sweet design, Carole

  4. Linda Cejnar

This is my first year following you during “Autumn Jubilee” and I have to say your pumpkin and stars quilt is absolutely jubilant! The orange fabrics you used in the pumpkins are so fresh looking! Thank you for the opportunity to win all the wonderful battings! ljbisme at msn dot com

I commented first, then went to the Rafflecopter and found I was supposed to tell you what batting I would try first…I think I would try the wool batting first, because with the quilt I use on my bed now, I still get chilly in the early morning. I used an 80/20 batting in it, so I’m hoping the wool batting would keep me warmer. Thank you for this giveaway! ljbisme at msn dot com

Supreme cotton is the only one that I have not used. I love Hobbs Tuscany battings. They quilt beautifully on my sitdown machine. They launder like a dream. I tend to use them exclusively for my personal quilts.
    Thanks for a great October.

  6. Jennifer Rauch

Oh so pretty! Pumpkins are so easy, I don’t get bogged down thinking I don’t know where to start, & the scrappy stars make it all so interesting together. You are such a productive quilter – I got distracted by some Aha! moments making cards, tho so need to re-orient myself & FOCUS so my little pumpkin/star wall-hanging can get finished for Christmas! Enjoyed your post!

  7. June Neigum

Forgot about the batting, I have never used any of this brand. But anxious try them. The wool would be my first try as I love the pop it gives quilt designs.

  8. Love your project!! The pumpkins are so fun with the stars. My friend, it is time….you need a design wall! 🙂 Love the way it all came together!! Thanks for the blog mention!! 🙂

  9. Love the combo of stars and pumpkins and how the star points trace diagonal lines for lots of movement. I have never used Hobbs batting and would love to give it a try.

  10. I’m going to have to buy these Tuscany battings. I almost always purchase my batting and JoAnn Fabric because it is very close to my home. But, of course, their selection is very limited. I will have to start ordering online because I would love to try these other battings.

Good morning Carole…..I wasn’t sure about the quilt, until I saw it all put together, and I absolutely love it, but this old fogy love the layout with all the pumpkins facing the same way. They are all very pretty, but #1 is my favorite. Sorry to see Fall Jubilee coming to an end.

  12. It’s gorgeous, Carole! I’d say no sashing, pumpkins tumbling (that way quilt can be used in either direction) and I LOVE how the star blocks form the diagonal grid design. It’s just stunning. I think you were right in adding sashing to the table topper….it’s cute as can be. I love those ghostly white pumpkins.

  13. Hi Carole! What a fabulous finish to the Autumn Jubilee. I just love the star block. I used a similar pattern (called Evening Star) to make a quilt of random nine patch blocks. I look forward to seeing how you quilt this. ~smile~ Roseanne

Growing up in cold WI, Mom talked about the warmth of woolen blankets. She lovingly cared for them, airing them out in the summertime and storing them with cedar blocks until the cold winds returned again. With that said, WOOL would be my first choice for batting for a sofa quilt for a very tall son in law who is battling brain cancer. I’m working on the top in between caring for their children (2 and 4 years) so it is slow going. Thanks so much and love the pumpkin/star quilt top.

  15. Amy L

Love the tumbling pumpkins! I’m knee deep in Christmas stockings right now, but am so happy you include access to these Autumn Jubilee projects so I can come back and play with pumpkins. as for the batting, I’d like to try the Tuscany Silk Throw first with some cotton voiles. I think the throw will be luxuriously soft.

  16. Shirley

Love your Autumn Jubilee. Beautiful colors. Not much Fall living in SW FL, so quilts like this give the illusion of having a real season – and brings back many memories of living up North. Would love to try the Tuscany Silk Throw first, since warmth in quilts isn’t needed in FL. 🙂 Thank you for this giveaway.

  17. cathy vergo

If I am lucky enough to win the batting I think I would try the silk one first.
I like your pumpkin quilt. I was fond of the pumpkins all in a neat little row.
lol – you can tell I used to work in a middle school.
keeping my fingers crossed I win

  18. Lisa Clark

I use Hobbs batting exclusively and for many years. Wonderful durability and drape. Would love to try their wool batting.

  19. I would first try the brand new twin size batting, the Supreme Cotton. I’m finishing a twin top for my grandson and Cotton is the way to go for their climate. The runner up as a very close second would be the silk batting. I’ve heard wonderful thing about silk but never had the funds to get some just to try. Thanks for the opportunity!

  20. Gwynette in NW Arkansas

Pumpkins and stars!!! Last night was clear and cold with stars twinkling over the pumpkins my husband grows and piles on the porch. Made me think of your quilt.! I think I’d like to make your quilt and use the wool batting. Just sounds cozy. Thanks ever so much for the pattern, Carole.

  21. Niki W

I really like your final layout for the Autumn Jubilee quilt. The pumpkins are great.

I think I’d like to try the silk batting in the give away. I’ve never worked with anything like that, time to learn something new.

  22. Both of these tops turned out beautifully! I tend to just use plain cotton batting, but am intrigued by both the wool and the silk battings. I would probably use the wool one first to keep me warm in the wintertime.

  23. Laura M

I would have never thought about turning the pumpkins around. So glad you showed us the effect, because I love it.

  24. Cathy C

I would like to try the silk first, but will use all four.
Thank you for the giveaway and the inspiring quilt-along.

  25. Sharon Schipper

I never have orange so I bought 4 different orange fat quarters to make some softy pumpkins, then I saw your pumpkin block! so… thanks, another project. I’m finishing hand quilting the leaf runner I started last year from your large leaf block, and I finished the wall hanging from the panel I bought from you on etsy TWO years ago, sheesh, it got put away and forgotten during my move and all it needed was to finish the border and hanging sleeve. big hug dear lady.

  26. I love the pumpkins and stars both with or without the sashing 🙂 This is a fun quilt top!
As to battings…I’d have to say the wool would be the first one to try. I’ve heard silk was good for quilty garments but I’m not likely to get that one tried any time soon. LOL
Thank you for the fun pumpkin quilt inspiration!

  27. janice young

    Carole;
Always nice to see a quilt pattern reveal.. Love your quilt but really like the black and white with sashing.
    Love your daily postings.
    Janice

  28. Mary D

Love how the tumbling pumpkins turned out! You are always so inspirational. I would try the Hobbs Wool throw batting first. I have family quilts with wool batting and they are so cozy!

  29. I’d like to try the Tuscany Supreme Cotton batting. I have used Hobbs’ Premium, and love it. The quilts are looking so pretty. My quilt will have sashing, and tumbling pumpkin blocks would look great. Like you said, that would make either end the top.

  30. I love the colors in this quilt; the fact that it’s fast and easy means I can put it together quickly, which is a big bonus! Thank you for sharing your talents in both design and direction. The written descriptions were easy to understand and follow.

As for the giveaway, I have never worked with Hobbs batting before so I would be thrilled to try any one of them!

  31. Donna W

I love the pumpkins all right side up so that is the layout I pick. Fall colors are my favorites and your outside border is perfect. I’ve never used that type of batting so it would be fun to try.

  32. The Tuscany Silk Batting would be so nice to try. And your pumpkins, every which way, the ones with the dark sashing are great. Then the background border and multi colour one are a super finish for the larger quilt, love those colours together/ We have a new home to move to early December. no wonder with all the packing I didn’t join in your Autumn Jubilee this year.

  33. Carmen Montmarquet

I totally love your pumpkins going every which way, that way no matter where you are sitting you can see some of these fun pumpkins.
Would love to win these battings, and i would choose the wool one a i am crazy into wools at this time!
Thanks for a chance to win!

  34. Melanie

Another great autumn quilt pattern to celebrate a welcome time of the year! I favor the tumbling pumpkins with no “right side up.” Thank you, Carole!

  35. Joan Hannes

I’m not sure how mine will go together since I used white for background of pumpkins and tan for stars. Maybe sashing to pull together? Great colors though! Joan

  36. Tina Zee

I would try the silk one first. I bought a silk batt in China a decade ago and I’m still afraid to use it!

  37. Robin

Love all the possible layouts for this Autumn Jubilee. BTW the Hobbs Tuscany Silk batting is to die for …………………. lol …..

  38. Joy Breedlove

I’d probably try the cotton throw batting first since I have a throw quilt about ready to sandwich! But they all sound wonderful. And I love how you put the quilt blocks together on the Autumn Jubliee quilt.

  39. Joy Breedlove

By the way, I commented, then clicked the Rafflecopter thing but it just took me to a login page (which I did) and not to a Rafflecopter survey. I tried!

  40. kathyinozarks

I love your pumpkin quilt-perfect as a throw to enjoy during the autumn months.
If I were to win I would love a wool batting or possibly one make from recycalbles

  41. Hi,
I love the tumbling pumpkins layout – good choice! I enjoyed following along as you posted the steps, but decided to just admire from afar this round – I am trying to make some serious progress on many long -time projects this year!

I regularly use Hobbs 80/20 battling and have the plan to try both silk and bamboo on quilts for which the tops are completed. I’m thinking of hand-quilting with the silk.

Enjoy all your fall colors before the snow flies,
    Susan @susansquiltstudio

  42. connie wolfe

Thanks so much for making the Jubilee projects available. My fall projects currently will fill all of this year, so I will be able to start planning for next year using your site.
    Connie

  43. Cheryl

Always look forward to the Autumn Jubilee posts. Thank you for the projects. And what’s not to love about a Hobbs batting give away. Fun!

  44. Barbara Dillingham Moore

What an inspiration you had with the Tumbling Pumpkins! It’s just what that top needs and I love it! Thanks for sharing these cute blocks!
    Barb in Tucson

  45. Patricia Evans

I’d try to wool throw batting first, but they all sound interesting. The Autumn Jubilee quilt along project is adorable, but I just didn’t have time to play along this year. Thank you for keeping it available. I’d like to go back and do it after the holidays.
    Pat

  46. Pam

I love your fall quilt! Looking at it makes me almost feel and smell fall air and pumpkins. I would love to try the Tuscany silk batting, because I’ve never quilted with silk batting before. Thanks to all your awesome sponsors!

  47. Debra Miller

Love your pumpkin and stars quilt top! I would have to try the wool batting first as hopefully it is warmer and I am freezing to death!

  48. shoshana

i would love to try the tuscany 100% wool batting. as always, thank you for such a fantastic Autumn Jubilee, i haven’t sent any pictures, but i’m loving each block!!!

  49. Those pumpkins and stars do look nice together. What great sponsors you managed this year, Carole, the Autumn Jubilee prizes have been amazing! All of those batting a would be a treat, especially the wool. 😊

  50. CAROL S NELMS

Very pretty thanks for sharing and the great giveaway. I would like to try the cotton wool, I made a quilt years ago with cotton wool and loved it.

  51. Diane Pickthall

I love the pumpkin quilt! And, I’d love to try the new Supreme Cotton batting by Hobbs!! I’m a huge fan of their 80/20 cotton so how much better is the Supreme?

  52. Phyllis Smith

    Hi Carole

This is so neat but I think I would like to make a leaf pattern with the pumpkin that you made as a table runner some time ago, Just a thought for a little more color.

    Phyllis Smith

  53. Barb K.

I especially like your white pumpkins and would like to try something with them–your quilts always look so nice!

  54. LindaMB

I love your quilt top but my preference would be to make the pumpkins all oriented the same way, as in your first photo. The leaf print border is perfect.

  55. dezertsuz

That link back was a nice surprise! I think this is a great quilt. I haven’t done any blocks yet, because I’m about starred out with three star projects going. However, I am sure I’m going to get back to stars in time to have it done for next year’s Autumn Jubilee … I just know there will be another one! This is a great quilt and I look forward to seeing how you quilt it.

  56. Jan Snell

I would definitely try the silk batting first! I love the tumbling pumpkins layout and I think you did a marvelous job of putting the first border as background fabric. Today my first job is to make a pumpkin block into a trick or treat bag for my granddaughter to use for her first time out for Hallowe’en. Always, family first. Thanks for the wonderful quilt-along. Janice.snell@ gmail.com

  57. Although the wool would be tempting also, I would love to try the silk batting. I’m curious about how it would needle, and how the finished quilt would drape.
Loving the Autumn Jubilee posts! The pumpkin quilts are adorable!

  58. Joanne

I really enjoyed the Autumn Jubilee posts! I’d like to try the silk batting–I have a kit of silk fabrics to make up.

  59. Mary Crawford

Love your pumpkins of every color! Harvest here in Minnesota is finally in full swing after many days of rain. We completed our soybeans today – hurrah! Enjoying all of your projects and lovely photos of the scenery. We live on the prairie – miss all the trees.

  60. Joy H

I adore the autumn colors and your stars and pumpkins are beautiful! Hmm…I would probably try the wool first, as I haven’t used wool batting before and it sounds so cozy for our Wisconsin winters!

  61. I’d love to try the Tuscany Cotton Wool Throw. A customer of mine buys Hobbs by the roll and I use it on all of her quilts that I longarm for her. It does quilt nicely.
