Colors of August Improv Table Topper

Finishing up the placemats in the Colors of August, I realized I needed a pad for the center of the table, so out came all the scraps left over.  Once again, a bit of improv was needed. I had two extra squares sets made, and one large piece of the focal floral, so I cut the floral to 12-1/2-inches wide and put the square sets on each side. Then, I added two strips of the floral to the top and bottom just to make the size 10-inches square.  After that, a border of the gold was added to increase the size to 14-inches square.

I loaded it on the longarm, still threaded with the gold-green variegated King Tut and neutral Bottom Line threads.

It made sense to use same pantograph as the placemats, too.

It didn’t take long at all to run a couple of passes on this small project.

Trimmed up, it is ready to finish.

This time, I didn’t have nearly enough of anything left for binding.  I cut all the bits I had left into 2-1/2-inch strips and sewed them together, spreading out the prints.

With this many bits and seams, it is wise to test fit the binding before beginning so there won’t be any seams on the corners.

A couple of days later, and it is all done.

  1. I wish I had been as smart as you. I made these really nice place mats in blueberry, cucumber, oranges and mixed veg patterns and they live on my kitchen table. Unfortunately, but the time I realized that it would be great to have a matching pad in the center….all of the fabric was gone :~(.

This set is adorable. I would love to make a set like this for Karen (mom’s former every morning caregiver) she goes to see daddy now on Wednesdays does the laundry and blabs and cleans the apartment. She is a doll. I have made her many things. I wish I could make her a huge quilt but I have a million excuses why I can’t finish any of my big quilts. Anyway, to the point, this is a sweet project. I have made pieced binding like this. It is fun. Maybe I will use the bits left over from the bunny quilt top border to bind.
    Happy Sunday Carole.

  3. What a pretty set for the table! Scrap Dance Tango is now happily sitting in my download file. I’ve loved that pattern for quite awhile, so I’m happy I finally bought it. Thanks so much, Carole!

I really like your placemats and table topper! Last fall I made Stars on Autumn Lane for a friend, and then a fall table topper for myself out of the leftovers. I love doing that! Thanks for the sale on your patterns, too.

  5. It is truly amazing how much you can get out of left overs….I’ve still got tons of pieces left over, even with the five quilts I’ve been working on this year! I estimate there are at least four more in those drawers!!!!
The table topper is the exact complement needed with the placemats! What a lovely August combination you have improvised, Carole!

Hello Carole; How fun that you were able to play with this lovely fabric once again. The center table topper you created is very pretty and looks wonderful with the placemats. I can not wait to see what table setting you use with these. I am finishing two quilt blocks by QAYG today and then on to the trimming. I hope that you have a fabulous day!
